Note: To participate in this discussion you must read all manga chapters up to 383. Post your theories and thoughts on who Tobi really is. Information released thus far: Tobi wears a mask with only his right eye showing, Obito gave his left sharingan to Kakashi and "supposebly" died. Tobi is shown in the manga with the sharingan. In the manga Tobi states "Mandara Uchiha's power. My power". In the manga Tobi gives orders to the leader of the akatsuki Pein. When talking to Zetsu, Pein says "He suddenly appeared a short time after mandara gave me orders to capture the nine-tails". The character Tobi and the history of how Kakashi got his sharingan are released at approximately the same time. Tobi and Obito have the same personalities. Mandara was alive during the first hokage's life span, thus wouldn't it be impossile for him to be alive? So what do you think? Is Tobi Obito or Mandara. My Theory: I believe Tobi's body is that of Obito, but Mandara possesses it. It would be much like how Orochimaru moves from body to body in order to gain immortal life. Obito being a Uchiha would have made the perfect vessel. Also Tobi is currently watching Sasuke and states he is interested in him, perhaps he sees Sasuke as a new possible vessel? To further support this theory, the fourth hokage states he belives that Mandara was the one that summoned the nine-tails to attack the village. In order for Mandara to be alive during this time he must have used some sort of jutsu to continue in order to switch bodies.

Well I've thought of this plenty of times. Since Tobi has Sharingan, he more than likely is a Uchiha (Duh.), but I have had arguments with many people about Tobi's Identity.
First, Tobi is Madara. Well, he claims he has his powers, and Madara is the first Uchiha member, but he helped the 1st Hokage build Konoha. So Madara would be dead, or really old. Unless, he had Orochimaru's jutsu to do a body transfer, He also made a remark Sasuke's Sharingan is stronger then Itachi's, or rather, is developing faster. So if he is Madara, then he is old or uses the body tranfer and wants Itachi or Sasuke's body.
Second, Tobi is Obito. This one would seem more wanted if you asked me, a lot of people argue Tobi can't be Obito because Obito died. That may be true, though you have to look at it in a different prospective, Obito may have never died. So what if rocks crushed him, Akatsuke has Zetsu, that can change everything about Obito, maybe Zetsu pulled him underground and Pein thought he could use him. And about Obito dying, We really don't know about it. I mean
**[Spoilers]**Look at what Pein did to Jiriaya,he died and he was able to come back to life just to send a dying message. **[/Spoilers]**
So really we can't assume Obito "died" Because this is the Manga universe, anything can happen in Naruto.
Third, Tobi is both Obito and Madara. This is probably one of the best I've heard. Like Ani said maybe it's Obito possessed by Madara. Clues lead to this theory being almost correct.
Fourth and finally, Tobi is neither. It's a possibility Tobi is neither Madara nor Obito. It could be a Uchiha member who has the power of Madara.
Whoever Tobi is, he must be powerful to tell Pein what to do, someone who has the Rinnegan.
Example of Rinnegan: Rokudou Sennin was viewed as the original shinobi and his Doujutsu was regarded as the most venerable of the three great Doujutsu. As the original shinobi it was said he created modern Ninjutsu. The Rinnegan was regarded as a god of creation when the world was racked with chaos and as a weapon of destruction which could return everything to nothingness. Usage of the Rinnegan was said to give the user mastery over all six forms of chakra nature manipulation.
And we know the little thing about Mangekyou Sharingan. there are three users who can use Mangekyou if you include Sasuke. And Kakashi isn't part of the three because this was told before he could use Mangekyou, and plus, Itachi even said Kakashi could never truely unlock the powers of the Sharingan.
We can imagine the three users are Itachi, Sasuke, and Tobi. This also leads into Obito being Tobi, Kakashi has one of Obito's eyes, and it has the power of Mangekyou, so since Tobi has Mangekyou, you'd think he's Obito, since he has the other eye.
I'm not sure about any of this, but I put my two cents in.

I never even considered that Tobi may not be Obito or Mandara. It may be possible Tobi is a uchiha member, but it wouldn't make sense since Jiraiya recalls the fourth hokage as he battles Pein and remembers what he said about the nine-tails. It just doesn't fit the timeline since all Uchihas alive at the time were later killed by Itachi, if they truly had mandara's power, Itachi wouldn't have been able to kill them.
I forgot a few more things about Tobi and Obito.
1. Same hair
2. both love orange
Wouldn't it also be possible Tobi lost his memory due to a head injury? The rocks after all did crush half of his body...

I do agree that Tobi most likely wouldn't be just some normal Uchiha Member, I remember the first discussion about him I ever had.
Someone said he was actually Shisui, the guy Itachi "Killed" for Mangekyou.
But you are right it really wouldn't fit in the story that well if it wasn't Madara, but then again, if Madara can do the body transfer like Orochimaru, It can be anyone I'm guessing.
Really though, I'm just trying to put in more options for this discussion.

Itachi may not be dead.
It's safe to say he's gone crazy though, and we kinda finally understand the Mangekyou Sharingan.
Hmm, I could use this in the RP xD. Anyways, so far it looks like someone is going to die soon, and with the serious look on Sasuke I'm gonna say Itachi is dead, but I know Kishimoto has the same rep as Sakurai, throwing those WTF things out.
