It seems like every time a show hits America they ruin it, or i suppose i should be a little more specific, on adult swim or cartoon network. i like the fact that the shows are getting plublisity but it seems like they naturally attract the wrong people, the people who just watch japanese anime and chop up the language by adding it to their speech. like death note and naruto were cool before the came to america....now i am kinda ashamed to say this but i am embarrassed to say i like them. i am sure we dont have people like that here at this guild

if i offended anyone i am deeply sorry

Well, I have to say I generally disagree with your stand on this (no offense ^^; ). Sure, there are cases where the anime has been butchered; I remember wanting to maim some 4Kids editors way back when Yu-Gi-Oh was on regularly.

But can I honestly say that I think America is ruining anime?

Nope; that is too extreme a statement. In fact, as time is going by, the quality of the anime released in America has improved greatly. That's due to a greater demand and understanding of Americans.

It's kinda hard to take a factual, definitive stand on a topic so broad. sweatdrop

Well it may be true that both societys accept different things but, to me, anime is a work of art and should be only translated not edited or censored you know? It butchers the whole show or movie to take out what the characters say or do because it is also taking out that characters personality and how the anime was suppose to be taken if we change it to how we want it instead of how the artist wanted it. The quality can be all spiffy but its the story line and the drama that I am worried about. I use to watch yugioh when i was in middle school and all that too watched the movie and it looked ok.*got the little marshmallow dude as a card ^^* Thats all I am saying, I like an anime not because of how spiffy it looks but on what the content is. And its seems as though America is hellbent on making sure that we are over protected.

sorry for the rant

I sort of understand what your getting at. A good example of what you mean is Dragon Ball Z. When I was little, they showed it right before I went to school, so I watched it just about every freaking day. When I was a little older, I watched a few episodes of the Japanese subtitled versions, and my jaw just dropped. It was so much better, and there was so much that was cut out or changed. I can understand something like covering up a little boy's p***s. But changing it so completely that it goes from something adults would watch (and enjoy) to something they put on so that the kids'll shut up is just irritating. If a show is not directed towards kids, don't change it so that it's kid-friendly. Keep it the same!

...Is that sort of what you were getting at? sweatdrop lol

Personally, I think that people should show the raw anime while the actors try to sound out the lines. This may be a bit embarrasing, but I do ym own dub to fan subs, just to see what words would sound right with the character's mouth motions. I usually use a word that means the same, but sounds different, and it actually looks good. I would reccomend this for someone who would ever try to dub an anime.

that is what i am talking about, you know somethings like bout the little boys thing showing you know censer that with a bar or something but to chop it up and make it so it will appeal to those who it was not intended for is stupid. its kind of like making chocolate milk and asking if someone who is lactose-and-tolerant if they want to drink it.

on dubbing, so long as you stick to the lines it doesnt matter, you know unless its a deep voice doing a high pitch voice sweatdrop

Right. Well, America is getting better about it, though. As the generation that grew up with animes like DBZ and Sailor Moon grows up (our generation, basically), it seems so does the target group for the animes that are being broadcasted in English. This seems especially true for the animes that focus more on the plot and character developement. Y'know, the ones that require you to have a brain and use it.

Well, another thing to take in account is what company dubs it.
DiC is WAYY better than 4kids.
4Kids RUINS SHOWS
And other companies which I am unsure of the name because I'm too lazy to look, for some do okay. I don't mind dubbed versions especially since when I'm watching anime it's in the background while I'm doing something else so I don't have time to read subs.

You're right some of the companies just don't do a good job dubbing the anime over to english.

i dont think its just dubbing, i mean cutting out whole scenes or episodes. i just think that america is too strict and tight butted to be healthy you know? it just seems like everything is bad and the world needs to be politically correct. well to me thats just boring, what makes this world interesting is our differences *which could be considered ironic in this thread* not being nice and all that makes us like someone or hate them more. in other words you get a different effect if you change it and no one is ever happy i suppose, but you changing it wont necessarily make it better, its not like its really going to hurt anyone to keep it the same, and if you dont like the original then you shouldn't like the changed one you know?

No offense intended here, but that was a particuallarly small minded comment in a thread with such in-depth explanations and discussions.

Um... ok then... stare

Anyway, I agree that America can be too uptight about things like that. But the companies only act that way because moronic American will sue the crap out of them if they do it any other way. We (Americans) have made the industry what it is today... and, to a certain extent, I'm happy with that. To a certain extent, I'm not. It all depends on the situation.

But to say that America is 'ruining' anime is a bit too extreme. If anything, the bad dubbing inspires Americans to demand more of the real thing, which makes quality standards better for us here.

Of course, 4Kids cannot be forgiven. They're just mean. gonk

I say its 50 50. or maybe 49 49%. Let me explain. Sure plenty of animes get americanized in a bad way. The writing could be terrible due to the translation and the voice acting could be horrible. I guess because they just use bad voice actors. But when they use actual professional voice actors (Steven Blum; who voice acted spike spiegle and countless other animes and western cartoons) then the show can really awesome. There are a lot of animes that are better in the original japanese and there are a lot of animes that are better in the english dub. Cowboy bebop, Ghost in the shell, Samurai Champloo, Neon Genesis Evangelion (at least to me), the list goes on. And in some rare cases the voice acting is horrible in both japanese and english and most of those cases result in the anime being better in Spanish, believe it or not. Example: Saber Marionette J
