This is something silly that I wrote to motivate some REAL authors to enter a short story contest for a guild I belong to. I just decided to throw in on here on a whim, so I hope it's being rather corny, cheesy, and altogether silly will give some of you a laugh! sweatdrop
The morning light glinted off a wet black nose as its owner emerged from her den. A symphony of reds and golds played accross her back as Shirra stretched, causing her mate to grin broadly.
"Shirra, my love, if you continue to look so breathtaking, you will be the death of me yet!" he teased.
Shirra returned his devilish grin. Arlen was large for a fox, his own auburn-colored fur concealing his powerful frame. She was not concerned for the safety of her mate. The scars that ran along his shoulders and back attested to the many times he had been challenged. Nothing remained of the challengers themselves.
"There are more pressing matters than you pride, darling, another kit was taken last night."
Arlen growled softly. He knew that the only predators in the area were several rogue males, desperate enough to turn on their own kind. His eyes flashed angrily. He considered for a moment and then turned to face Shirra.
"Then we will act now, before these attrocities continue." he stated.
Shirra nodded and left him standing alone as she vanished into the woods. She slipped silently through the trees, following the grisly signs of the rogue's passage. Her anger continued to mount, filling her lean body with a strength belied by her size. The destroyer angel that was Shirra easily found the den of her prey.
Arlen watched from a distance, not wishing to reveal his presence there. Shirra, he knew, niether needed nor wanted his protection. Still, he mused, she was his mate, and his honor demanded that he defend her.
Shirra stepped gracefully out into the open, knowing what the result would be. Predictably, the rogue emerged, his blood stained jaws curling into a grin. There was no need to question his guilt. The look in his eyes needed no explanation as he closed the distance between himself and Shirra. She sat waiting, only the blaze in her golden eyes revealing her true intention. The mangy rogue touched noses with her in greeting, but in a crimson flash of lightning her teeth cut through fur and flesh and bone.
Arlen, no longer able to control himself, lept onto the stricken beasts back. His powerful jaws closed on its neck, sealing its fate.
Shirra glared at him for his interference, but she couldnt stop the grin from spreading accross her dripping red mouth. She could never resist him when they fought together. She turned her back on the grisly scene, returning to Arlen's side. The woods fell silent once more as they walked side-by-side into the lengthening shadows of afternoon.
