Tonari no Yamada-kun ( My Neighbors the Yamadas) is completely different from standard Studio Ghibli animation. This film consists of rough sketches in outline form, with soft colours reminiscent of watercolour painting. It was based on a comic strip of the same title. Favouring character portrayal over plot, Takahata?s film is a wonderfully simple and wry look at the Yamada family: mother Matsuko and father Takashi; their son Noboru and daughter Nonoko; Shige, Matsuko''s mother; and Pochi, the family dog. Irresponsible, slovenly and lazy, the Yamada family and their unassuming way of life leave a delightfully humorous yet poignant impression upon the viewer. Director: Isao Takahata

This poor thing''s got no replies so I''m "bumpin" it up with a question for you all. Is it just that no one''s seen it yet or that it really was Ghibli''s worst production?

I think it's just way too unknown. And nobody in the join requests ever mentioned it...

How can you not? (Don't answer that sweatdrop ) It's just so light-hearted and the fact that it doesn't really have a point makes it better - it kind of reminds me of Azumanga Daioh in a way...

I was more surprised at the fact that someone watched it. ^^ It's not my type of animation, but since you liked it so much, now I'm interested. 3nodding

Well, you compared it to Azumanga Daioh, a manga I really like, so I'll probably enjoy this movie too... If I ever watch it. xp

I think that Sushi is the only one who watched it. xd Anyway, I think she probably watched it fansubbed, or she knows Japanese and has the DVD... Either way, it was just licensed in the US so maybe you can order it. (Shipping to the Philipines might be a little expensive, though.)

I found it at Borders and on Amazon.com. That is why I was interested in knowing the opinions of the guild members on it before I bought it. 3nodding
