disclaimer:I'm telling you how "I" do Kickflips, there are more than one technique or style of doing this trick, so experiment with my advice or even ignore it if it doesn't help.

Prelude: I find that understanding the Ollie will lead to success with the Kickflip.
Ollies are basically made of 3 important steps; 1-the pop, 2-the lift, 3-the slide.
(you can argue that the lift is either the pop or the slide or even both)

The Kickflip is basically a modified Ollie. Instead of sliding your foot up the board to straighten it out in the air, you slide it off diagonally to get it to flip. You can slide it off to the side depending on how you feel the trick out or depending on your foot positioning. If your front foot is closer to the Kicklift (the Nose in this case, Kicklifts are the Nose/Tail, these may go by other names, but this is what I refer to them as) in other words if your front foot is slightly up on or above the Bolts/Hardware then sliding it off to the side is best. If your foot is on or below the Bolts/Hardware then I'd suggest a more diagonal slide across the board. "What's the difference?" if your foot is too high on the board you might make the board tip forward, so sliding the foot to the side using the concave (the curves/bending on the sides) of the board to flip this trick. Now if it's below or on the Bolts/Hardware and you decide to slide your foot to the side you might make the board rotate, tip backwards or toss it away from you, so sliding your foot off diagonally is suggested. *(you can go against this entire paragraph when you get more skilled at this trick since it can be done with any technique, but I'm merely suggesting what can happen and what you should do at the beginner phase of trick)

Now the problem that you might find is that it flips too slow or it still lacks control. This is when we get a little more technical and add in a new technique called the "Flick" or "Flicking" (flicking of the foot). This technique is much like how you would flick your hand using your wrist, but instead using your foot with your ankle. When you slide your foot (switch your ankle should be slightly tilted so your foot is on it's side) near the end of the board you'll want to Flick your foot straight again, out of it's bent sliding position. There should be more control and the board should flip faster. The Kickflip may or may not take long to master, but it will require practice regardless. Sooner or later you'll be able to do these blindfolded while juggling, maybe.
