This is a thread about the pianists who interpreted music from certain composers in the best way. Which are your favourites?

I'm going to go for Clara Haskil for Mozart. I have a CD of her playing some of the Piano Concertos, and they sound incredible. The best one living, in my opinion, is Mitsuko Uchida...

Mozart - Clara Haskil
Beethoven - Claudio Arrau
J.S. Bach - Angela Hewitt/Glenn Gould
Chopin -
Rachmaninoff -
Grieg - Leif Ove Andsnes??
Schumann -
Brahms -
Haydn -
Scriabin - Vladimir Sofronitsky
Liszt - Vladimir Horowitz

I'll add more composers as people suggest.

By the way, the real motive of this thread is to let me (and other people) know the best recordings to get for different works. I thought it would be really useful...

Greatest interpretor of Scriabin in my opinion is Vladimir Sofronitsky. He has that spontaneous touch that is needed for Scriabin pieces in my opinion. Sample of him playing in my profile. He's also a superb Chopin interpretor although some may prefer Rubinstein.

It is too bad that he wanted most of his recordings destroyed towards the end of his life. emo

I'd say Angela Hewitt for Bach, but there's always Glenn Gould...hmm.

My teacher suggested for me to listen to Pletnev playing Mozart when I was learning the sonata last year. Pletnev's style is very Romanticized, but it did give me some concepts of a freer performance...not that the versions played by Uchida and Ax aren't superb, but Pletnev did shake up the foundations a bit and really made me think.

I've heard that Alfred Cortot is the greatest for Chopin, but I'm not completely sure.

For Beethoven, I would suggest either Richter or Arrau. Then again, Richter is pretty damn good at interpreting anybody.

For Liszt, I think Horowitz...maybe. It's kind of hard to know what Liszt was thinking when he wrote all his crazy music.

I've edited as suggested, except for the Alfred Cortot, because I'm not completely sure, and Chopin is a big one...I was going to say Rafal Blechacz.

I also added in Leif Ove Andsnes, because everything he plays of Grieg is heavenly, and his Piano Concerto is the best I've ever heard.
