Liberty Enlightening the World (French: La liberté éclairant le monde), known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty (Statue de la Liberté), is a large statue that was presented to the United States by France in 1886. It stands at Liberty Island, New York in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper patina-clad statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship from France to America. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the statue and obtained a U.S. patent useful for raising construction funds through the sale of miniatures. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the repoussé technique.

The statue is of a female figure walking upright, dressed in a robe and a seven point spiked rays representing a nimbus (halo), holding a stone tablet close to her body in her left hand and a flaming torch high in her right hand. The tablet bears the words "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" (July 4, 1776), commemorating the date of the United States Declaration of Independence.

The statue is made of a sheeting of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf. It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal with a foundation in the shape of an irregular eleven-pointed star. The statue is 151 feet 1 inch (46.5 m) tall, with the pedestal and foundation adding another 154 feet (46.9 m).

This massive statue has become a safe haven for those in NYC that are not fully infected and not infected at all. The surounding ocean serves as a mote, protecting them from attack since the fully infected cannot swim.

The windows were painted black to keep out the UV rays that burned their skin like acid. Lights of any kind made her wince, but the sun left her skin raw and open. Still, she missed feeling the sun's warmth and she detested the darkness she was a prisoner to.

The girl could only imagine how much worse it was for someone to be locked up in darkness unnecessarily. Someone like James. He didn't complain but she couldn't help wondering if he'd rather be somewhere else. It wasn't exactly safe for an immune to be locked up with any sort of infecteds. There was a small group of immune people on the west side of the statue and down three floors but James had made himself a room not far from where Meg and her little group of H.I's.

She sighed and crossed the hall that lead to the door that would lead her to the head of the statue and climbed the stair case. Once at the top, Meg took a glance around and crossed the room, carefully avoiding the cracks of light that made their way through various chips in the black paint on the observation windows that tourists used to look through in the halo of hte statue. She found her little pile of blankets in the corner of the room and sat down, crossing her legs underneath her and took out a soft leather bound book. Closing her eyes for a few minutes, she was quiet and then opened the book and began reading.

James' eyes peered out of the one room in the entire statue that allowed sunlight to shine brightly. his eyes searched the ground for non-infected soldiers looking to take out his home. James stood in the giant flame torch, a 50 caliber snipur rifle locked into a tripod to keep the gun steady, and to keep it from firing him across the room... whic hwas a distinct possibility considering the immense power of the sniper rifle.

There was nothing yet... but he had day guard... he had to keep an eye out.

He was hungry. The hunger made his stomach churn and twist into painful knots. He was new to the Statue...new to the group...but not new to this feeling. Saliva dripped from the corner of his mouth as his thinking became more and more focused.

Hungry. Find Food. Eat.

His sentient intelligence vanished in a sudden warp into warped animal drive as he quickened his pace and headed for the staircase that lead to the torch of the statue. He remembered there being a morsel there. He'd do nicely.

James' eyes dipped over the Did-It-Themselves military base in a building oposite. The soldiers watched the statue day and night, but did not make a move. They needed the half breeds alive. They needed to use them to find a cure, they world was counting on...
"You're making a move..." he muttered to himself as he watched the men and women oposite become active. Moving like they had a purpose.

"You know by now that storming the place gets more of you dead... Or... Are you just surveying..." James released the 50 cal. and grabbed up a Desert eagle and strapped it to his leg. He then took an AK-74U and headed to the door.

He heard movement-then smelled the man just behind the door. He was coming out so the beast decided to go in. He burst into through the door, ignoring the sunlight still wafting through the glass and lunged for the man, teeth barred.

James fired, sending a number of bullets through the half-infected's arm, stunning it momentarily.
"You're new here." James said, pulling the clip out of his sub machine gun and checking the number of bullets. He pressed the clip back into the gun and looked at the beast again. "You're new so I'll give you a mulligan for this one. That's not how we do things in this statue. I dont know how you did it where you came from but right now... I'm the only day time defence you have. I don't know you. I don't consider you a high priority. If I have to choose between your life, and the lives of those I can protect while im alive I'm not going to choose you."

He fell back against the wall, hissing and writhing in pain as his mind fought to regain control of his body. He rumbled unintelligable growls and roars.

"...uggh...ow....Hungry....liiiggghhhhttt...." he covered his eyes with a smoking arm as he inched away from a ray of sun that leaked into the room.

Downstairs and to the left, Meg jolted from her reading and leapt to her feet. The gunshots were echoeing through the statue and she knew it meant bad news. She grabbed a blanket and ran for the torch as fast as she could.

"James?!" She called as she hurried up the stairs.

James walked around the edge of the room. he knew that he didn't have long before this raving half infected would no longer be problemed by the sunlight. he looked out over the horizon... the sun was barely still visable.

"I don't know your name... but I like the name Steve... stephen if you like." James stopped, oposite the attacker... next to a switch. "So stephen... what's it going to be? you gonna calm down... or am I going to have to kill you?"
PostPosted: Wed Jan 09, 2008 5:54 pm

Steve shook his head with a grimace of pain. "No...no...kill." he said haltingly. He hadn't meant to attack him at all...he just...couldn't help himself.

Meg felt her heart pounding in her chest as she wrapped a blanket around her shoulders like a cloak so the sun wouldn't hit her when she went inside the room.

"James? Are you all right?" She burst in and then stopped in her tracks, seeing the infected bleeding and James standing over him.

"What happened?"

"Nothing much, just Stevie boy here getting a little carried away." James said, turning back to the window. the sun had raised a few inches, revealing just uner half of it.
"You should probably head back inside, the sun's about up. I'll get some sleep in a bit..." he turned and looked out the window again.
"I fear he army isn't going to hold off much longer... if I were them I would just level the city... but im not them... and their stupid."

She frowned and moved to help Steven, lacing one of his arms over her shoulder and straightened. He groaned, whimpering at the wound in his leg. "Do you think they'll ever do anything like that?" She asked James as she turned to go.

"...I mean, if they do...won't that level us too?"
