now forgive me if i'm wrong but in the movie, and i've only seen the movie, it seemed like mrs. lovitt knew that there was a possibility that todd's wife was still alive, but she was too in love and did what she could to keep todd to herself in a way. Being that my assumption is correct i beg the question was mrs. lovett a deceitful b#@$$ or was she just in love? Moreover, would you do the same in this regard, keep a secret from someone you loved because you love them?

There's a Mrs. Lovett thread in the Character Discussion Forum, but anyway.
I think it was just jealousy because nobody probably paid any attention to her when Lucy and Sweeney still lived above her shop, though she was in love with Sweeney. It kind of makes sense that she'd want him all to herself since Lucy was out of the way.
I might've done the same, but it depends on the secret and the person. ;D

mrs. lovet is a desperate selfish woman. i say this because i've watched the broadway (different versions) and the movie. she lies out of the selfish want to have a man to herself. she felt she could have him for herself if sweeney didn't know his wife was alive. she tries to make it sound like she was just trying to protect him, but really she was selfish. she wasn't really as much in love as she was lonely and just wanted companionship. that's no excuse for wut she did, though

Here's my idea of Lovett. She always was in love (Or lust) with B.B when he lived above her pie shop. But Lucy was always in the way. Now that she was out of the way and she had Sweeney to herself, no way in hell she'd tell Sweeney. And I also think in her warped logic that it would be better for Sweeney not to know.

although i wouldn't call her a selfish b***h, i can't say that i totally agree with what she did to Sweeney in the name of love, however if i were to put myself in her position where i loved someone so much that i would tell them that they're wife poisoned herself and presumably died, i do somewhat the same thing she did
