Everyone is once again in the Yellow Box on that fateful day that had been planned and thought out time and time again. Mikami has just come in. He's counting the seconds. "35...36...37...38...39..."
"This is my win, Near!" Light says triumphantly. Near just smiles at him.
"40!"
Near's smile disappears as suddenly, he gasps for air, and falls over on the floor. Lidner runs forward and holds him in her arms, crying. She keeps shouting at him, "Near, snap out of it! You'll be alright!"
But it is not alright. His eyes look at hers, causing her to cry harder, then they fade away like the sun at the end of the day.
She sniffs. "He's dead..."
At that moment, Gevanni gasps as well. He falls over, and is dead quicker than Near. Lidner, realizing that this is the last time she will ever be able to speak, turns to Light. "You're a rat. You're evil. Anyone who does this...monstrosity...is pure evil! How could you do this!?" She gasps and falls over as well, and the last thing she hears is this:
"I'm not evil. I'm justice. You got in the way of justice. In the end, you're either good or evil. You are evil, being in the way of justice." She slowly fades away.
Matsuda has tears streaming down his eyes. "After all this time...how could you?! How could you?!"
Mogi gasps and falls over as Light says, "Because it had to."
Matsuda, enraged, pulls out his gun. "You...I trusted you! And you did this! You aren't justice!"
"Yes, I am. That's a lesson you'll be learning here in a few seconds, Matsuda." He sneers his name.
Aizawa pulls out his gun as well, but only to drop it and fall to the ground, dead. He had no last word, the one who suspected him in the first place.
Both Matsuda and Light ignore him. They are too conflicted with each other to care.
"And I thought that you could understand." Light said.
"I did...until now." Matsuda looked over at Near. "He was a hero for challenging you. How could you even think of it? How could you even--"
Matsuda gasped, falls to his knees, and falls over forward. The last thing he says, is, "Justice didn't prevail. There is no justice here!" And he closes his eyes, and after one shaky breath, he is gone.
Mikami comes over to Light, puts a hand on his shoulder, and says, "It's alright God. It's all over now." He hands him the Death Note.
Light nods. "Would you give me just a minute alone?"
"Yeah. Sure." Mikami exits.
As soon as he's gone, Light walks over to Near's carcass. "I never expected to have to kill a child. But you were asking for it. If only you could see...if only you could see..." He rethought his actions. He didn't seem to be high enough to die of a simple heart attack. He deserved to be massacred. But, no. This wasn't the place. People would realize that they weren't coming back soon enough.
Light looked back over to the original task force. This is what his father died for. This was what his sister survived.
He looked down at Aizawa. What of his family? No, he shouldn't. It wouldn't be fair to all the other criminals of the world. And besides, he had suspected him all along! This was what he got...this was what happened to those who got in the way...
Of God.
The first thing that Light did was call Misa to come and pick them up. When she got there, he touched her with a piece of the note, so that she regained her memory. Then he drove them to a motel.
It was later at the motel that Light killed off Misa. She was no longer of any use to him, and if she halfed her life again, it wouldn't be very effective. Mikami had the shinigami eyes, and you only needed one pair.
Light went on to effectively rule the world, and kill anyone in his way. When Mikami passed, Light selected another person to be by his side, to weild the shinigami eyes, and be puppet to Kira.
When Light passed, he passed his role along to a young girl. It went on this way for the rest of time. Passing along rights to the Death Note from one person to another.


And so, the story of Death Note concludes in my eyes.
