Debate item:
  • What is the best Linux or *nix distribution out there that can run from a flash drive.

Restrictions:
  • The flash drive is 1GB, no bigger.
  • It has to be in the Linux/Unix/BSD family, no Live-Windows CDs.

DSL

It installs in only 50Meg. I used it for an in-car laptop system that had a 1GB flash drive.

The only small Linux distro that I have had my hands on is Damn Small Linux, it is nice, have it on a 1 Gig thumb drive, and with 4.1, latest stable release last I checked, it is small fast easy it use, even easier if you know the JWM or Fluxbox window managers, The only problem I have with it is that it is picky about when it wants to boot, it gives me kernel panics one time then a couple seconds later it boots no problem, works on my laptop but not my friends, things like that. I say give it a try and if it doesn't work for you then you only wasted 30 seconds installing the thing wink

Why DSL? I understand that it would be the first thing to come to mind, but merely on 1GB you could boot Gentoo, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Knoppix, Linux Mint, MEPIS, ect.

I didn't know some one made a howto on that, I knew you could get mac 7 on a USB drive. Also another reason why to suggest Damn Small Linux is that it is actively being developed. Damn Small Linux 4.1 was released a couple of days before my post on Dec 29, 2007 (see above) and now as of Jan 20, 2008 4.2 is stable and 4.3 is in RC, Release Candidate, stage soon to be released.

I don't know if you can run it on a flash drive but Knoppix is getting really good lately, now it has support for Compiz Fuzion out of box on most cards.

Anyone heard of SliTaz, it is like half the size of DSL or something like that. 25MB

@Zher:
I completely forgot about this guild, I don't visit guilds often.

I think Slax is best live distribution exclaim
it can boot from cd, hd, fd and others devices!
full KDE 3.5 and programs for work, module-packet system.
but I like installation from sources blaugh

you can get slax on "slax.org"

Ubuntu ******** Netbook Remix.

Comes with all the software you need for a netbook in typical Ubuntu way, hardware detection is focused on netbook hardware, it has an awesome launcher, fits in a single gigabyte memory, and best of all, its wireless drivers all of them let you put your card on monitor mode and use it as a sniffer ^^
