Nyx watched the elders walk away and heaved a weary sigh once they were out of ear shot.

Welcome back lady Nyx. Didn't expect you so soon. Thought you'd be busy with that boy of yours. Nice of you to remember us, and your duty. Oh be nice, can't you see the poor silly girl's in love? Duty, Harrak, duty; love shouldn't be a factor. It wasn't for her father.

The leather-winged mare shook her head rapidly a few times to clear the words out of it and let out another sigh. Well, at least everything hadn't gone to hell without her. Still, the fact that some of her advisors were now openly critical of her choices... Oh they were always critics of course; that was their job but... But not like this. Their tones, the glances that were exchanged; she wasn't used to that. Wasn't used to her private life being the issue they were criticising. Wasn't used to her father being brought into it.

The splotched mare gave herself a thorough shake in an attempt to clear the tension from her body. It didn't work very well, and Nyx gave yet another sigh before turning away and setting off at a trot for her favorite resting place. She hoped that she would find Hasani there; seeing him always made her feel better.

Hasani wasn't in their small alcove, he stood on a ridge above the herd with his back to them. In a short time he'd gone from a sweet kind stallion to a hard one, he heard all that was whispered among the herd even their hopes of Nyx choosing someone else yet he stood guard of them still. He was thinking about those rummers it sickened him that they craed so little for the happiness of their leader, but it also hurt that Nyx might even think about caveing in to their demands.

For a moment he turned his head and looked over the herd then he jerked his head back before him and watched the open plains. Later tonight when he and Nyx were along he could relax into he's sweeter self ut now, here infornt of everyone he was cold, distant, and hard as stone.

Snorting he let a strong breeze whipped his mane into a furry around his thick neck. Hehopped Nyx wouldn't give in to her 'advisors but if she did .... he cut the thought off and closed his eyes.

He wasn't there. Bother. Nyx frowned to herself and twitched her bob tail at a passing fly as she pondered where he might have gone to. Her weary brain didn't have any solutions, and so the splotched mare turned about and set off at an easy canter for the tallest rise in her territory; if nothing else it would give her a good place to scan for the blue stallion from and she might even strike lucky and find him there.

Pushing her advisors' words to the back of her mind, the splotched mare stretched her stride a little as a smile crept over her face. Whatever they said to and about her, whatever the future might hold she would see Hasani soon and that made everything feel better. Tossing her head with renewed energy, the leather-winged mare thundered up the hill, blue eyes fixed firmly on its summit. No matter what the future held, tonight would be good once she found her red-eyed beau.

Hasani flicked his tail and closed his red eyes letting the breeze whip his mane into a furry once more. Flicking his ears the blue stallion stood silent his ears flat against his skull. He could feel the lightest chill in the air as Jack Frost began to stir from his sleep and wrap icey fingers around the lands. Hasani threw his head back making his mane fly for a moment before it settled once more against his thick neck.

He suddenly laughed bitterly, "seems I'll seen be walking alone right into your grips Jack old friend." The sound of hoof beats made him turn his head even though he recognized the hoof beats.

Slowly turning he watched as Nyx came up, his wings rustled on his back. Hasani forced his ears to come back up and he moved slowly forward towards Nyx. "Hello love," after a few steps he stopped and waited for her to approach him further. His eyes flicked down towards the herd bellow and they narrowed once before he turned them again to Nyx.

"Hasani," the mare responded with a soft smile as she came to a halt by his side and nuzzled at his neck. "How are you love?" she asked a moment later, smiling up at the larger creature. When she'd first spotted him he'd looked... angry? She wasn't sure; his ears had been flattened back but that didn't necessarily mean his was cross... right? But the way he'd just glanced down the hill... Had she done something wrong, or was it not her he was upset with? The splotched mare hoped he'd tell her; she wasn't usually one for paranoia but... The tall mare pushed her worries away and waited for a response; no sense jumping to conclusions after all.

He nipped her forehead softly letting his tail flick back and forth, at least for now Hasani could relax and once more let his softness come through but he seemed a little more guarded than today.

"I'm fine,"
but even as he spoke he cast an angry glance to the herd bellow.

The stallion shifted slightly, internally he was fighting with himself as he tried to decide whether or not to ask her about the mummers that had been flying. Externally he looked calm and laid back eyes gazing lazily to the horizon once more.

Another cold wind whipped up Hasani's back making him let out a snort, He tossed his mane then flared his wings upwards before folding them back down once more.

Nyx smiled and nuzzled the larger Aeri. “That’s good,” she said with a smile, shivering slightly and rustling her wings in the wake of the wind... That glance. Angry. He was definitely angry about something... but it seemed to have passed now; he was relaxed again. Yet...

Yet she worried. She really disliked worrying but maybe there was good reason for her to worry. The herd didn’t like her decision to stay with Hasani and she understood the reasoning, she didn’t didn’t feel like bowing to it. From a purely logical standpoint she should cast him off and find a mate of important, but she was not a purely logical creature. What she wanted and what the herd needed, or would benefit from at the very least, both tugged for her attention and loyalty. So far logic was fighting a losing battle against the splotched mare’s determination not to let this dream slip away from her.

Internally shaking her head over herself, Nyx gave Hasani another nuzzling. “Missed you today,” she told the red-eyed stallion with a smile.

Hasani flicked his tail back and forth, "I missed you as well" he nuzzled her forehead softly. His wings rustled then he laid them over her back to protect her at least a little from the chill. At least for now Hasani let his slowly dying heart live once more, his Nyx was the only thing that kept it alive when she was near but his mind was still locked on the fact that she may reject him just because her heard mates told her too.

"How are things in the herd?" Hasani rarely ventured into the group preferring to stay up on the ridges watching for danger.

His red eyes stared off into the distance when they weren't looking at her and his mind was swaying between his previous thoughts and her. A chilling breeze whipped his mane yet again and he let out a soft snort and watched his breath puff out like a white smoke.

He let out a soft breath "Dear Jack is going to set in hard this year..." he was thinking out loud.

Nyx nodded and snugged her wings closer to her sides to keep them warm. "Yes," she agreed, assuming Hasani was referring to the cold, "he is rather..." And what was she to say of the herd? They were all well, there was enough to eat, there were no big disputes and only a few small ones. Everything was fine. The neighbors, though unhappy with her, were still being icily civil...

"Not bad," the tall mare said eventually. "Everbody's fine... The council still isn't happy about, well, about us but I'm ignoring them. I'm sure if push comes to shove I can find somebody to make of enough importance to make a good match." She wasn't sure she liked that idea though; asking somebody else to do as she would not. Still, there were some who might well welcome it in exchange for a position in the herd even if it was in name only. She hoped there were at any rate.

The idea still made her think of Bastet, the Jala girl who had visited a little while ago. Her father had told her to take a mate. She hadn't. If she didn't go back somebody else would have to. The black-coated girl's father had put her in an awfully diffiult situation, and Nyx didn't want to do that to any of her people. Still, if there was somebody suitable... Ha, maybe she should wait until she had foals and then promise one of them to whoever was most appropriate, because that wouldn't make her a hypocrite in the least.

Sighing to herself, Nyx lent against Hasani and gave a shake of her head. "Sometimes I wish I'd never taken charge of this herd," she murmured to him as she took in a breath of his scent.

Hasani listened silently to her words would she really make someone do that in her place? The stallion let out a snort and his wings flared up in an angry manner. A angry snort escaped him before he could reign it back in. The blue Aeri tossed his mane, "thats not right to do ... maybe the elders will have to learn to just except me." He stamped a fore hoof the sound thudding heavily in his ears.

"You are the leader, they need to learn to respect your word and see it as law." He tossed his mane again and another snort exited his nostrils the hot breath puffing.

Hasani, even after his changes, rarely got visibly angry unless it was something that truly bothered him. "I swear, some nequus need a good kick in the muzzle," the stallion gritted his teeth but with a final snort forced himself to calm down and relax

Nyx sighed at the tall stallion’s words and shook her head slightly; she was glad that he seemed to have calmed down again, it would make it easier to talk to him about all this. Angry people seldom really heard what you were saying to them, she knew that from personal experience on both sides.

“I know,” she sighed, “I know... I mean if there was somebody happy to do it in order to get whatever position I made it that would be one thing but I wouldn’t actually force anyone...” If only it were as simple as he was making it out to be. Just tell them no, that she was the boss and they should live with it? Perhaps if they were wrong, it would have been a possibility but as it was, she was denying her people useful allegiances by this choice.

Nyx sighed again and peered down over her herd, a frown forming on her face. “They do respect me, mostly,” she said thoughtfully, hoping to explain their position to Hasani without seeming to agree, because she didn’t agree. “They know that they can’t make me do anything, they can only advise me of what they think is wise and unwise; it’s their job after all. I suppose they’re just used to me listening to and agreeing with their advice rather than doing the exact opposite.”

The splotched mare turned back to Hasani at this point and gave him a warm smile. “You’re right though, they’ll just have to get used to the idea that I’m not going to make a nice political match. It’ll take a while but... well, I’m sure they’ll either accept you in the end or just give up on complaining about you.” The short-maned Aeri smiled again and nuzzled at her love’s jaw. “Old and stubborn they may be, but I am more stubborn than all of them put together. They can say what they want, but I won’t let them change my mind.”

Hasani let out a thunderous snort and his hoof pawed agitatedly at the earth, bloody creatures trying to separate them, if he were anything less than chivalrous he would have torn down and ripped their hides to shreds. His wings shifted on his back and his ears flicked backwards in annoyance for a moment before once more he forced himself to relax.

Once more a chilling wind blew up his back and the stallion snorted.

His eyes turned to the horizon to see the bright sphere of the sun sinking bellow the horizon. The stallion shook his head "we better head back into the valley and then to our glade before the cold really sets in." Slowly the stallion turned and moved down the step slopes towards the grazing herd bellow.

His hooves dug into the banks to control his slipping and sliding and his muscles tensed beneath the deep blue coat as he continued his slow careful decent.

Nyx sighed internally, nodding externally. She wished it didn’t make Hasani so angry that her councilors disapproved of his presence, but she understood why it did. She wished it didn’t make her councilors so angry that she had chosen to ignore them and stay with Hasani, but she understood why it did. Still, for better or for worse this was how things were now.

The tall mare nodded to her partner’s words and set off beside him, her bob tail flicking at an insect that had flown too far from the warmth of D’ob. It settled on her rump nonetheless and, having discerned that it wasn’t the biting kind, Nyx let it stay there; the buzzing little thing wouldn't survive out here.

Smiling softly to herself, the splotched mare glanced over at her mate. Her father had always told her that duty came first, but he had also always told her to find herself a good stallion. Perhaps, if she was very lucky, she would be able to balance the two. All that remained was to find a suitable position of importance to invent, and then to find a Nequus willing to take it on. How difficult could that possibly be? Deciding that ‘not very’ was the answer, the blue-eyed mare gave a contented sigh and, for now at least, pushed worry to the back of her mind. It would come out alright in the end; she was sure of it.
