Help me see the truth in all situations.
With my spiritual eyes.
Teach me to hear Otherworld messages
With my spiritual ears.
Bring me food for the soul from the gods
That my spiritual body may be nourished.

Majestic forest king with antlers high,
Mighty strength belongs to you.
Fill my mind with common sense
To do the things that I must do.
Lend me in paths of quiet calm
Where I connect with other minds.
Whose souls, like mine, yearn for the truth.
And worship higher pwers divine.
Where paths to spirit are unigue
To every woman and each man,
And all respect each person's way
Of following an unvoiced plan.

Scientific name: Lemur catta

Appearance: Their fur is mostly gray with white underparts. They have slender frames; their narrow faces are white with black lozenge-shaped patches around the eyes. They have black vulpine muzzles, and their long, bushy tails are ringed in black and white. Their hind limbs are longer than their forelimbs. Their soles and palms are padded with soft, leathery skin. Their fingers are slender and dextrous with flat, sharp nails. They have claws on the second toe of the hind limb. The very young lemurs have blue eyes while the eyes of adults are all a striking yellow.

Length: Adults may reach a body length of 46 centimetres (18 inches) and a weight of 5.5 kilograms (12 pounds). Their tails are up to 56 centimetres (22 inches) in length.

Found in: Madagascar

Habitat: Lemurs occupy the southwest of Madagascar and ranging the farthest into highland areas than any other lemur. Ring-tailed lemurs inhabit deciduous forests with grass floors, or forests along riverbanks; some may also inhabit dry, open brush where few trees grow. They are thought to require primary forest (that is, forests which have remained undisturbed by human activity) in order to survive; such forests are now being cleared at a troubling rate.

Diet: Primarily frugivores (fruit-eating); they will also consume leaves, seeds, and occasionally insects.

Behavior: They are diurnal and inhabit both the ground (terrestrial) and the trees (arboreal), and form troops of up to 25 individuals. The females tend to dominate the troop, while males will alternate between troops. The lemurs claim a sizable territory which does not overlap with those of other troops; up to 5.6 kilometres (3.5 miles) of this territory may be covered in a single day's foraging. They spend more time on the ground than any other lemur.

Other: They produce readily in captivity despite being declared an endangered species due to habitat destruction. Both vocal and olfactory signals are important to Ring-tailed Lemurs' communication: fifteen distinct vocalizations are used. A fatty substance is exuded from glands of the lemurs' a**s and armpits, which the lemurs run their tails through; this scent is used by both sexes to mark territory, and to challenge would-be rivals amongst males. The males wave their tails vigorously high in the air in an attempt to overpower the scent of others. The breeding season runs from April to June, with the female in estrous for only one day. Gestation lasts for about 146 days, resulting in a litter of either one or two. The young lemurs begin to eat solid food after two months and are fully weaned after five months. Males reach sexual maturity at 2.5 years and females at just 19.5 months.

Scientific name: Cervus elaphus (also called red deer or wapiti)

Appearance: Bulls may stand five feet at the shoulder, with legs three feet long and body lengths of eight feet. Their coloration is generally tan with dark brown legs, neck, head and belly, with a buff colored rump. Bulls may be lighter colored than cows, appearing silver at times. White and silver colored animals do not appear in the wild. Antlers of mature bulls usually have six or more points per side with main beam lengths of 1.5 m (5 ft), inside spreads may reach 48 inches.

Length: Elk weigh 230 to 450 kg (500 to 1,000 lbs.) and stand 0.75-1.5 m (2.5-5 ft.) high at the shoulder. Their antlers usually measure 1 to 1.5 m across, tip to tip. Males often weigh twice as much as females.

Found in: North America

Habitat: Mainly forested or grassy areas in the northern reigons of North America, such as Minnesota and Michigan. Also found in Britian, where they are called red deer.

Diet: Grass, bark, and leaves.

Behavior: Adult Red Deer usually stay in single-sex groups for most of the year, coming together to mate during October. During the mating ritual, called the rut, mature stags compete for the attentions of the hinds and will then try to defend hinds that they attract. Rival stags challenge opponents by bellowing and walking in parallel. If neither stag backs down a clash of antlers can occur, and stags sometime sustain serious injuries.

Other: The males are called bulls, the females are called cows, and the offspring are calves. The primary predators of adult elk in North America are mountain lions, wolves, and grizzlies. Coyotes and black bears sometimes prey on the fawns. The elk is an important totem animal to many American Indian tribes.

Elks in History: Bullwinkle from The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, which first aired in 1959 as Rocky and His Friends.

My human. She seems nice enough... She took me from another black-haired human girl in a foul-smelling building and cares for me. My thoughts on her are mixed at the moment.

The Lemelk

"Gotta run faster...gotta...run...fas...-ter..."

There was a dull thud, and a young elk-like creature fell to the ground, struck by sudden unconciousness.

---

Hours Later

Deep brown eyes opened slowly, blinking a few times to clear the grogginess from them, before the creature sat up slowly, its' great head glancing about. His nostrills inhaled deeply and were met by a sickeningly putrid scent. It was definitely not natural.

As he gazed about, his dark eyes took in everything around him. Everything seemed to be white or silver, and nothing looked like home. There were no trees, no grass, no lakes or ponds. Just white, and that awful smell that never left his nose.

"Hey, Kynthari, come look! The lemelk is awake!"

There was a sudden shuffling noise that told him the ground was not soft and spongy as it should be, but instead hard as ice, the cold substance that coated the water during the white months.

He gazed around and stood up slowly, his legs still a bit weak and unstable from the chase.

"Hello little guy," came the voice of a young human girl. Her long black hair accented her deep navy dress, and as she approached the creature, he could feel something soft and warm caressing his muzzle. It felt quite pleasant to the touch. "We've found someone to take you home."

He found himself being led out by the dark-haired human and into another room, nearly identical to the previous one. Another girl stood before him, her hair equally black, but hers was much shorter. Her eyes were kind and smiling, and she reached out to touch his nose and gently stroke his horns.

"Hello, Julien," she said softly.

Fenced In

Mrnglff... Huh? Where...where am I?

The horned creature sat up, glancing around. He was outdoors and resting peacefully in a patch of grass. His nostrils were delighted as they met the scent of something new but wonderful-smelling.

Standing and stretching himself, the lemelk found he could vaguely remember a human girl...riding in a machine...arriving at this place... The rest was quite hazy, but for now his stomach was rumbling and he was hungry for whatever strange substances were exciting his senses.

He found a large object, long and rectangular in shape, full of berries he''d never seen before. Not too far off was another container holding water, and a third filled with some kind of grass/seed mixture.

He dug into the fruit, happily munching on the sweet nectars and juices they provided. Once filled and satisfied, he surveyed the area around him with deep chocolate eyes.

It seemed he was fenced in by a high frame, made of something hard that he could not break or jump. Inside the area was a field of grass with plenty of room to run and excersize. It was quite unlike the forested area he was used to, but perhaps he would come to like it here all the same.

The Julien

"Good morning, Julien."

Julien...Julien...what was a Julien? The human's eyes met his whenever she spoke this word, perhaps one of few he was beginning to understand in human tongue. Maybe...maybe he was a Julien?

He was certainly not of anything he had seen before, oh no. The closest things he had found were a deerlike creature with a sturdy build enveloped in a dark hazel coat, sporting great horns with rounded ends on its' proud head; the second animal was of a more monkeylike origin, a small striped grey thing that leapt through the treetops with the greatest of ease. Both beings were so vastly different that he could barely begin to comprehend how two diverse creatures could come together, much less be attracted to one another, and create him. A Julien.

There was warmth caressing his face, and Julien reared up in a horselike position, startled at the sudden touch of something foreign. Snorting as if in warning to the human girl, he took two steps backwards, away from it.

The girl followed with painstakingly cautious strides - soon, Julien was backed against the hard, silvery thing that blocked his escape from the wooded area he once called home.

"My name is Fox," she told him. Her voice was soft and soothing, a gentle sea breeze in a worldly era of crashing tides. For a moment, his eyelids sank closed, and he stood stock still while 'Fox' stroked his muzzle.

But hairless creatures were not to be trusted, especially not those who swept one away from his home. And yet she provided him with a new home, one with less trees and more room to roam. And still he longed for the shelter of the treetops and the dark green light that filtered through the leaves that towered above him near the heavens.

Just Water

The long tail of the hybrid swept the ground as he trotted around in the pen. Ugh - it was so dull and drab here. There was nothing to do and not a soul to converse with, not like in his forest home.

The sun shone down on him, a scorching topaz floating in the heavens that lit up the world. He frowned up at it for a moment and thought he might melt.

Sploosh!

Julien reared up, his horns waving around in the air and his hooves kicking about wildly in defence as something terribly cold and damp clung to his gray fur.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Julien, it's alright! It's okay! It's just water!" A voice that was all too familiar to him. The lemlk stood there, stock-still, brows furrowed and eyes narrowed menacingly at the human girl.

How dare she squirt him with such chilling water? If he had wanted a bath, he would have gone over to his watering dish. He would have -

But oh, it felt good now... The sun was beating down at him, shooting unseen flames down at him that burned his fur and evaporated the water. Nudging the human's shoulder softly, he made an odd squeaking noise and nodded his great head in the direction of the hose.

She seemed to understand this gesture and turned the water on again, gently showering him with more water. And through it he leaped, dancing through the dewy grass as the droplets cooled him and made the day noticably more bearable.

Holiday Bustle

Tiny bits of sparkling white dew floated down from the heavens, landing on Julien's nose. Inside the house, there was a great hustle and bustle, with Fox and her companions rushing frantically around in a last-minute attempt to get the place decorated for the holidays.

Fox was one of the small crowd of Gaians who did not celebrate Christmas, but she was in good spirits this year; and besides, just because she celebrated Winter Solstice didn't mean she couldn't get her friends some gifts.

Julien trudged through the snow to peer inside the house at a window. Around it hung little evergreen leaves and small red berries. He sniffed them but dared not eat them - he had been repremanded for doing so a few days ago.

He could see the human inside beside the fireplace, decorating it's great mirror with sparkling gold and silver bits. On the walls were hung paintings of snowy landscapes that she had painted herself. Turning his head to gaze into the other rooms, he saw a young green-haired human boy quietly sucking on a candycane.

He remembered when Fox had offered him a candycane. They smelled sweet and gave the tongue a strange but wonderful sensation.

The door opened, and a black and off-yellow figure stepped through the door. The violet-eyed gaze of Eduardo met his, sparkling as if someone had stolen the stars right from the night sky and set them into his like diamonds.

Eduardo approached Julien slowly. They were kin, sure, but Julien had been around longer and Eduardo had only recently arrived. The deer was kind to him, but he still felt uneasy with him.

Julien yelped when something large and white appeared on the opposite side of the window. It's mouth was hanging open and drool dripped from it's sharp teeth.

Eddie chuckled and gently pet the lemlk's neck. "It's alright," he assured him with a smile. "Sorali, shoo!"

He turned back to the window, watching the white and red dog go. Fox was tending to the many boxes, bags, candies, and other such things she had recieved from many people. She hung a stocking on the fireplace, although it was already stuffed - not an invitation for Santa, but there was a fluffy tail sticking from it. It had been a gift from someone.

Fox spun around quickly in alarm, moving things around. It seemed as if she were missing something...

Eddie chuckled, gently ruffling some of Julien's fur. "Look at that...Wreath is sucking on the Harowiin candycane."

Fox caught it just in time, managing to snag the object from the green-haired boy and place it safely back on the tree.

This might be his first, but Julien had already decided that he wasn't very fond of the holidays.
