Here's a discussion for all those strange little symbols (such as the clover) and sayings (such as the many phrases on 2D's shirts). Personally I don't understand what that skeleton dude is for, nor what the 'rising thumb' symbolizes. I'm pretty sure that 'Number of the Beats' was a band name that the group considered, but what are all those other things supposed to mean, like the number 23 and 'Death from Below'?
EDIT: What does "I <3 YOKO", "OWL", and "23 Hour Party People" mean? Also "Catch-23" and "corvidae"
EDIT: OH! I realized somethin'! Isn't that basketball that appears on the "OWL" badge the same one that appears on Noodle's shirt in "DARE"?

I know a few! Pink Rabbit Says: "Shoot to Ill" = Pink Rabbit Says: "Aim to Please" 23 = Yeah, just read '23 Skidoo' in ROTO, unless you don't have it, in which case I'd be pleased to explain. Tazar Yoot = Tanz Der Youth. It's a homage to the possible band. Dunkin' Dognuts = lol at Russel's favorite label Geep = Yeah, speaks for itself T Virus = The zombie virus from Resident Evil Duck sticker = "It's just a sticker I like" - 2D Rising Thumb = a few theories. Firstly, it's a pun on 'rising sun', which is the native name of Japan; 'land of the rising sun'. Secondly, here in Australia, if you put your thumb up and jab it in the air... it means "get ********" (scuse me language, but that's what it means). Since we're pretty close to England, this could be the case there, too. Not totally sure. Ones still a mystery to me: 68 Monkey that freaking clover OWL Your Mum Rang (though I think that might be a group) EDIT: Oh, and the skeleton dude is at least influenced by... err.. let me get you the link. He's a famous Mexican artist, anyway. Influenced Tim Burton, y'know. EDIT 2: It was Edward Burra. Look at the moon in this picture. I realised the influence the instant I saw that little skull guy...

*blinks* That was what Wikipedia said. I think. @.@ Rise of the Ogre The most observant Gorillaz fans might have noticed that among the Peter Falk posters, duck stickers, dinkle doodles and zombies the number 23 pops up around our band rather more than is strictly necessary.
Is it just a coincidence? Or could there be something more to it...?
Actually, 23 is considered by some to be the cosmic number of coincidence. The number of man. A mathematical umbrella for a whole heap of otherwise unrelated stuff. How many chromosomes does a parent pass on to a child? 23. How many seconds for blood to flow around the human body? 23. Where does the number of the Beast originate? 2 [divided by] 3, or .666. How do you get from Piccadilly Circus to Westbourne Grove? 23. It is, in the words of one of its disciples, kind of a big, cosmic conundrum of a number.
...
Friends of Beelzebub and happy deviant Crowley produced a cabalistic dictionary to share some of his dark secrets with his followers.
His entry for 23 is 'parting, removal, separation, joy, a thread, and life...'
...
Here are just a quick few for anyone who is still using a dial-up connection...
The Knights Templar, consecrated to the protection of pilgrims and the defence of the Holy Land, had 23 leaders and ended on 13 of October (13 + 10) 1314. Julius Caesar was stabbed 23 times. Keith Moon's Birthday was 23 August.Murdoc (rolling eyes): Oh wow. That's... heavy. The first Morse Code transmission - 'What hath God wrought?' - was from Bible passage Numbers 23:23. Dr. Pepper proudly announces that it is an 'authentic blend of 23 flavors'.
Murdoc: That changes everything! W, the 23rd letter of the Latin alphabet has 2 points down, 3 points up.
Murdoc: The phrase, 'This is a big load of rubbish' contains exactly 23 letters. Adding the numbers in 9/11/2001 gives 23: 9 + 11 + 2 + 1. Bonnie and Clyde were killed on May 23.
Murdoc: Sound of barrel being scraped. And er... U2 know it too. U is the 21st letter of the alphabet. 21 + 2 = 23. Actually, looking at this now... the whole thing;s just a big bunch of numerological nonsense, isn't it? It's a self-fulfilling prophecy; the more you look for it, the more you see it.
Murdoc: It takes 23 swift kicks with a Cuban-heeled shoe to boot the head of a yak. Coincidence or not? Shall we? Yes. Let's move on. Thankyou and goodnight. If you're still interested, Wiki or Google it; however since it's up there with 666 as Satan's number, I'd caution against the Google option. I personally see it as a self-fulfiling prophecy indeed - honestly, the more people know about it the more they put it into things. I still laugh at people who think it's their personal magic number. (Mine is a legitamate, little known number: 48. Wiki it, and tell me when you find my birthday, 11 October, in that page. =D) I heart YOKO: Remember Yoko Ono, anyone? And all the fuss that caused? I think that's what this is a reference to. Interestingly, in the original sketches for 'Dirty Harry', the sticker on 2D's helmet says 'War is Expensive', not 'I heart YOKO'. H'mm.

I think that was her last name. She married... John Lennon? One of the Beatles. The woman that killed the Beatles, they used to say. He wrote a song called 'Yoko', I think.

HeadPhonic How did she 'kill' the beatles? She's pretty much the reason the band broke up. At least, that's how most people see it.

HeadPhonic Ooare Pink Rabbit Says: "Shoot to Ill" = Pink Rabbit Says: "Aim to Please" *confused*Well. 'Ill' is apparently like 'sick', in US slang, which makes it, you know... positive. Then 'shoot to', you're aiming to. Yeah? Someone else told me that one. Wikipedia Yoko Ono Lennon (小野 洋子 Ono Yōko; however, in Japan her name is generally rendered in katakana – オノ・ヨーコ Ono Yōko – rather than kanji), born February 18, 1933, is a Japanese artist and musician. She is known for her marriage to English musician John Lennon. She currently lives in New York City. She married John Lennon and then bitched to McCartney about the credits of the songs (which were formerly all "written by Paul McCartney" regardless of who actually wrote them). Her marriage to Lennon sort of... occured in time when relationships in the Beatles were strained, and many people see her as making things worse. She also encouraged Lennon to work on things seperate from the Beatles, and musical projects with just her, as well as influencing him towards the 'hippie', alternative life style, as you can see in his later works.
