As a strong player of counter style, I've grown to rely heavily on power shielding. However, the better myself and my foes get with it, the longer the matches draw out. When neither you nor your foe can get a single hit in on one another for five entire minutes, the game begins to lose its meaning. What are your thoughts on the matter?

ANYONE can roll away from a grab. Granted, grabs are quite useful in team matches, but in 1v1, they're practically useless.

LOL! really I found that hilarious. grabs useless. XD! here let me show you a video of chain grabbing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBWqB7X2f-Uchain throws give characters like marth a fighting chance against fox/falco. sheik is good because she has one of the best throws in the game (down throw), it always leads into a tilt/arial against almost every character. she can also chain grab half the cast w/ dthrow. also grabs are fast enough to punish opponents when they make mistakes and in general for all characters can lead into an arial combo. so say marth openly fsmashes your shield, you can wd forward grab then combo the marth. grabbing is a major part of smash. it isn't easily avoided either because it is so fast and it gets you if you shield. btw if you roll backwards to dodge a roll, I can just follow your roll and jc a grab again and get you, so there really you cant avoid being grabbed by rolling. best way to avoid grabs is to not get caught sitting still while shielding.

It's impossible to chain throw if your opponent has enough skill to dodge grabs every time. And what do you mean "isn't easily avoided because it is so fast"? It gives several frames (depending on the character, of course; I don't recall the exact counts, but I believe the shortest is ten frames, which is more than enough time to dodge) of animation between the time which you press the button, and the time when you actually grab. It's useless against anyone with decent reflexes, because you'll never actually grab them. SSBM runs at 60 fps, which means 10 frames is equal to about 1/6 or 0.1666~ seconds. Anything that takes more than 1/10 or 0.1 second is going to be a cakewalk to dodge, even if they're playing as Bowser.

lol this is the noobiest most hilarious stuff i've ever heard. you clearly have never played anyone even half decent at this game.
grabs come out in 7 frames. so according to your little definition its so fast you cant have enough time to react. GG anyone who doesn't use grab as a major staple of their game = sux unless of course you are the most technical falco alive. or a samus/link/ylink player.
I really wish I could play you. where do you live?

After watching that video, I've decided to really learn to play Marth; I've never seen him lay down so much smack! As for grabbing, Vlin Vertigo, to ignore it entirely is to ignore an integral part of the control set up. Granted it does become less useful when your foe doesn't leave themselves open often; but USELESS (?), I think not. Apart from just 'grabbing', Link's hookshot makes a nice "Oh, snap!" extended range attack in the air and grabs ledges as well (yes I know you know that). Samus' can make a ranged air attack as well, in addition to that air dodge and grab at the same time really high jump thing she can do. And if you can't grab them, set them up for one! If you can't grab someone, then I would think a different sort of grabbing is called for. Ya know? If you made a video of you and your friend's match, I'm sure someone could probably help further.

You've never seen ken play before? what is the world coming to... mate, Grabbing is ESSENTIAL, links hookshot is sometimes useless as an offensive weapon, depending on who you are vsing. if you cant chain grab, you have nothing. even for me when I play as pikachu somewhat amateurishly, I need to grab and his grab box sucks a**.
