Far from the Alchemist Cafe along a winding road, through the forest, past three little towns, lies a small sliver of water, a channel separating the great nations of Amestris and Vana'Diel. When the snows of winter cover the lands, this channel is frozen over, solid enough for the brave adventurer to try to cross it on foot. And beyond that, in the trecherous Windtunnel Pass, where the winds howl more fiercely than a hurricane, is a temple. High up on the mountainside, far from the shelter of the high cliffs at the valley floor waits the Temple of the Bending Wind.

The Temple is steeped in legend and mystery. All who have tried to reach the temple have either failed, or upon succeeding, discovered that the doors would not open. Long ago they were sealed shut by a magic spell, and the temple's secrets were lost to time.

But now, the spell to open them has been found. And eight bold travelers will brave the bitter winter wind to reach the temple. For they must open it and take the treasures inside...or else a young man and a young woman will meet a bitter, untimely end.

Twin blue orbs squinted at the golden orb hanging low in the sky, their glittering light completely and utterly outshone by the heavens' greatest star. The face and form belonging to those eyes was already becoming tinged by the fading gold of a sunset's prelude, for the hours of the day were soon to expire.

Ashari's lips quipped into a frown. Even though she had pushed and pushed, even though she had gotten their party out of the Alchemist Cafe in a flat fifteen minutes, the sun was still setting far faster than she liked. They needed to be at Zerhen before dark, not after. The darkness slowed people down way too much, and they might have to set up camp outside the town, which Ashari wanted to avoid at all costs. If they didn't get a room in Zerhen, they would be wasting half a day's worth of alchemic research. That was unnacceptable. Getting Kii a body was the highest thing on her priority list right now, right next to getting Veridel's soul switched out of Envy's body and back to his own.

The Dragoon glanced at each of these people as she thought of them. Envy, stalking in front of the group at a merciless pace, distancing himself from everyone and moving like an angry wet cat. Veridel, who walked a little in front of her and to the right, his long legs and Mako-induced endurance easily keeping pace with the Sin. Kii, bringing up the rear of the party at the moment, walking along as if she didn't care a mite about anyone in the group, least of all Ashari...or was that just the Traveller's guilty imagination getting to her?

Ashari sighed, dropping her gaze to the ground in front of her. A lock of wispy, fine brown hair drooped in front of her face with the motion. She impatiently pushed it behind her ear with one gloved hand. Despite the cold air nipping at her fingers, Ashari's dark blue leather gloves had the fingers shorn off, allowing the Dragoon greater dexterity in battle. Her shirt matched her gloves, the plain, long-sleeved turtleneck being dyed the same dark blue. The Traveller, having always had a rather grumpy adversion to the cold, wore two undershirts beneath the turtleneck, as well as a black leather jacket over it. Similarly, her bottom was covered in a pair of thick, dark blue jeans, with a pair of longjohns under those, both garments stuffed into sturdy black leather boots. The leather was there to keep her dry. It wasn't snowing now, but her impenetrable leather shell almost dared the pale, cloudless winter sky to even try.

She was well-dressed, always planning ahead for cold weather, but she was seriously worried about the clothing of some of their other party members. Specificaly the Sins, and Kii. Kori hadn't yet revealed whether or not she had the same temperature sensitivity as a living human being. She was solid, which implied she had a sense of touch, yet she was dead, which implied that she didn't. Wrath, of course, should have been impervious to the cold, but with the way he dressed Ashari couldn't help but wince every time she glanced at the boy.

And then there was Envy. The eldest Sin had, of course, not changed out of the black, skimpy, miniskirt-and-midriff-top outfit he always wore. Ashari had not even offered him a change of clothes, knowing it would get her head snapped off in a vicious retort.

Her mind drifted back to the words she had heard Wrath so casually drop an hour ago. About how Envy's complexion made him look alive. Veridel's words echoed in her brain, too. About how the Sin would now experience the sensation of having body heat.

She had no idea if the body heat thing was true, as it hadn't been tested. It could have been a random conjecture from the ex-alchemist meant to tick off the tempermental monster, or it could have been a geunine hypothosis from an alchemic mind who knew exactly what he was talking about.

But whatever the case, Envy had a soul now. Whatever this meant, it was certain that the subtle differences in his appearance weren't the only physical changes he would undergo...or was undergoing. As he had absolutely no desire to share his feelings with bloody well himself, muchless anyone else, there was really no way to tell outside a sharp, observant eye.

Ashari sighed again. Only three-quarters of an hour into the journey, and already an unsettling silence had drifted over the group. They had split off into pairs or ones and were trekking down the winding forest path that way. No one seemed terribly interested in conversing.

For the Dragoon's part, it was normally the cold that made her silent. But another glance at Kii, and at the look on the ghost's face, was enough to stir within her a loneliness so unbearable that, at that moment, she would have welcomed any conversation, even a sardonic quip from Envy.

The sun had slowly began to set, leaving the naive brunette curious as to what lay ahead on this unpredictable journey. A sudden gust of wind pushed against her pale, lithe figure, and much to her surprise (and displeasure), the girl shivered. Even Kii had been curious, wondering what limit there was to feeling. She had no idea how everyone else felt in this cold weather, but it didn't affect Kii all that much. Or at least she wanted to believe that. Another shiver and she gave up trying to look tough, crossing her arms tightly. She straightened though, refusing to look pathetic. But into some eyes, she already was. From the back of the group, purposely falling behind as to avoid interaction with the others, she could see everybody. The often looked off to the sides, sometimes someone would look back at her, sometimes they simply stared ahead. Ashari kept glancing back much to her irritation, but she chose to pretend she didn't notice. No good would come of fighting with the girl so soon in the trip. This was unlike the situation with Envy, where he didn't look back at all, and instead, Kii kept looking at him. What was running through his mind? He'd stormed out without even putting up a fight... It was unlike him. Kii had wanted to rush out after him, but reminded herself that she hated him, and concern was not an emotion either of them wanted to feel for eachother.
But there wouldn't be a problem with that, so long as Kii was involved.

Another shiver. Wisps of wavy brown swayed back and forth, pooling over her shoulders and dancing behind her back. Her bangs remained arched over her left eye, hiding the shimmering brown optics. They held no emotion save for irritation, yet were pretty all the same. Perhaps that was all she was... A pretty face. Her gaze dropped and then fell off to the side, feeling insignificant. What exactly could she do on this trip? Not alive, yet not completely dead. She had little fighting experience since she usually stuck to alchemy in her early life, but did learn a little more from watching Envy and other members of the Cafe, throwing fights all around. Aside from what little knowledge she held, she was useless.
That fact bothered her immensely.

Her outfit was definately not appropriate for such weather. Of course, Kii hadn't expected any of this to happen, so she wouldn't have expected to be travelling out into freezing cold snow... Clad in a simple black shirt with elbow-length sleeves and revealed shoulders, netting underneath beginning from her palms and ending somewhere beneath the shirt, along with a pair of hip-hugging, baggy black pants and plain black skater shoes, the teen stuffed her cold bare hands into the pockets of her long, thin red coat. It was far too thin though, and seemed more of a fashion accessory than a wind-breaker. Damn her luck.
Although she'd just tucked one of her hands into her pockets, she couldn't sit still. She felt the need to move more than she already was. She removed one hand from the little warmth provided and ran her fingers through her bangs, tugging them awkwardly. The silence ate at her mercilessly.
But she wouldn't dare speak.

Kii took a moment to examine the others. Everyone had formed their own little teams or walked solo, like herself, Ashari and Envy. And it bothered her. Kii didn't like walking alone... She wanted to talk to Veridel, maybe Wrath, maybe Hughes (despite connections to two of three), but held no motivation or inspiration to do so. There would be nothing said, or it would be a one-way conversation. Kii's voice had long since died away, and her throat was rather dry. She felt tounge-tied, stuffing her hand back into the pocket of her coat. In truth, she had no clue how this would turn out. But Ashari's movements seemed quick, almost fidgity. She was worrying. Brown eyes peeked again at the white sky, smothered with thick snow clouds. She wished it would snow, but it seemed something was holding it back. It was definately cold enough, but no clouds formed before her dry lips. She was still dead. She also took a second to run her tounge against them, feeling momentary warmth, only to be cuddled by the icy tear of the wind.
It was getting dark, she noticed, and that must have been the reason for Ashari's edginess. She'd wanted them all to make it to the village before sundown. Somehow, Kii doubted that'd happen.

"Yeep!" The clumsy girl slid on a small smear of ice dotting the path they followed, causing her to slip forward. She stumbled and quickly regained her balance, but her cheeks didn't light up as they usually would. No blood circulated through her veins. It reminded Kii she was still dead.
"I'm alright!" she called out instinctively, as it always had been a direct reaction. She always said it after a moment of clumsiness struck. Her hands had flung out of her pockets to hold her arms out and help balance herself out, so she crossed her arms again since they were free. Another shiver. Her gaze fell off to the side to return to thought. The irritation was pushed away and replaced by thoughtfulness.
Not one bit was she tired, surprisingly. Thoughts of this adventure, old memories and current thoughts kept the woman wide awake. No way would she be getting sleep tonight.
Another glance at Envy. He should soon be feeling the sleep nag at him... Kii examined his attire and slowly shook her head before looking away again. Was he cold? He made it hard to tell, and she couldn't see his face from where she walked. If anything, Envy was the most vulnerable. He hadn't experienced emotions in a long time, so he would be knew to such things, such as the cold, illness, or exhaustion. Kii could handle them alot better, having been human alot longer than him. For a second or two the half-ghost's thoughts revolved around Hughes and Barry. Hughes was human as well, and Barry was metal. Would Barry rust?

Suddenly the girl came to a hault. The others kept walking, not seeming to notice. Her steps had always been the most quiet, for once you become a ghost, it becomes habit to be quiet. Not that she was completely silent, however.. There was always that crunch of snow beneath her shoes. For a second, Kii wondered if she were drowned out by the howl of the wind or not. Who knew? She wasn't them. She didn't experience things the same as they did.
But the reason she stopped had nothing to do with them. Her gaze swung off to the sides, and then she turned on a 90* angle to look behind her. She examined the empty fields behind her, but nothing was there. Or no one, to be more precise. She looked confused and simply stood there for a moment, her arms crossing tighter, before she turned and hurried to resume her position at the back of the group.
Where did Larrius go? Had he left them, planning to come back when they needed it? Or was he gone for good?
That tug at the back of her mind was recognized: Panick. Larrius would obviously be needed... Hopefully he hadn't left them.

Wrath had found himself some handy stuff to take with him on the 'adventure' and ofcourse had propped it in his bag, which was now swung over his shoulder. He had pleaded Twilight to take care of Choco, Umi and The General, the three animals that he owned. Well, it was more like two of the three had found him instead of he finding them... After that, he had said his goodbyes to Nova and Skye, who promised they would say goodbye to the others and wished him luck on the journey that laid ahead.

Ofcourse, the former demon; Red, couldn't have helped but question if Wrath couldn't die on this journey so he would be rid of him. Wrath had simply shrugged at him and stated that he would, when Hell froze over. After that he had left the cafe, clad in his usual attire.

Ofcourse, he knew that he would get cold. Even if he was an Homunculus. He had two parts of him that weren't. Two parts that were as human as Envy was. Two parts that belonged to Edward Elric, and those two parts would make it hard for him in cold weather.. But he wouldn't let that show, oh no. He would show the others that he was tough and that he could handle this all. That he could be a grown up too and that he was reliable. That he could be a helping hand in times of need.

And that was why he had stuffed some clothes into the bag, so that if Envy would get cold, he could give him some clothes. There also was some water in the bag, for those human under them. Ofcourse, he didn't mind water either. But it wasn't the time to think of himself. He could survive without water and food for quite a while, others couldn't. And Envy? Would he feel the tug of needing food now too?

The young Homunculus looked over to the green-haired elder before he turned to look at Ashari, then his eyes dropped on Barry, moving on to Hughes glancing to Alex, looking over at Veridel and finally falling upon Kii, who was way behind the group, as if she didn't wanted to be noticed... A contemplative look came on his face for a second before he finally dashed forwards and turned to look at the others, hopping about like a mad man. They were too serious! Too... Well... It made him uncomfortable!

"How long do you think this will take, Ashari-san~?" he called out, waving towards her before his eyes glistened up. "I bet we'll see lots of stuff along the way! I'm sure of it!" stated the boy before darting over to Envy, keeping up his pace with ease. "Ne, ne Envy-nii! If you need something warm to put on, I got some clothes in my bag. And if you're hungry I got some food too!" stated the Sin with a toothy grin and before waiting on an answer, the boy sped towards Barry, jumping on the armor and giving a chuckle.

"Hey Barry, have you ever been on an adventure? I think I have, i'm not sure though. Mostly it were solo adventures and those are no fun! And this time it's really something worth fighting for! Atleast that's what I think... Do you rust in this weather? You better not, ya here me!" huffed the young boy before pushing himself off of Barry and; without waiting for a response, darting over to Veridel, tugging on his arm.

"You shouldn't worry! I'm pretty sure we'll get your soul back!" he stated with a curt nod before looking ahead. "I mean after all, you do look kin'a weird being an Homunculus an' all. Just doesn't suit you!"stated the child, scrunching his nose and finally giving a grin as he sped over to Hughes, punching his arm friendly.

"I remember that time that you threw a kunai in Envy's ouroborus! I was quite mad about that, you know..! I don't like it if my siblings get hurt." stated Wrath, giving a snort before looking up. "But I understand now, and don't worry! I won't be a threat to you, unless you ask for it and I doubt you would ask for it...! Hey, you should teach me how to throw knives like you do once!" blurted out the youngling excitedly before he; once more, dashed off towards Alex without waiting for an answer.

"And you! I never thought i'd see you again so fast!" grinned the boy, eyes glistening up mischievously. "But i'm sure you're still not up for killing me, ne?" he joked with a slight laugh. "And you better keep your promise about me meeting that dragon too! I really want to see one!" said Wrath, patting Alex's arm once before he; again, rushed off towards Ashari.

"And you... you should tell me how I know you! Because something inside me tells me that I already met you before but I just don't know from where.. Do you ever get that feeling?" snickered Wrath, rubbing the back of his head with a wide toothy grin before he blinked and put up a finger. "And ofcourse i'll help you with all I have in this quest and your mission in getting Kii's body back!" he vowed, putting a hand against his chest before he looked over at Kii and finally, after giving Ashari a grin, shot over to Kii, walking alongside with her.

"Glad to see that you didn't fall some seconds ago. It would've dirtied your clothes, and trust me if you have some motherly figure in this group, you wouldn't have liked it." he snickered, closing his eyes. "Soo.. Your name is just Kii? Or is there something more? They call me the Sin of Wrath. But i'd like to be called Wrath Curtis. After my mother, you see. Because she's a really strong independent woman and I wanna be like that too!" stated the Homunculus with a curt nod before falling quiet for a few seconds.

"Do you miss being a ghost?"

Barry the Chopper {{Butcher of Central}}
I kill therefore I am!

______________________________________
Barry had been one of the last ones in the group, last in line next to Kii, he was only a few feet ahead of her actually, truging along grumbling to himself about what Ashari had said to him before they had left the cafe. He had a large bag over his shoulder that was carrying somethings that might be helpful in the days ahead.

Mr. the Chopper.

It sounds like you’re choosing to accompany us. I’m very grateful for your assistance, especially in regards to keeping Kii safe from Envy.

But I’ve heard of your predilection for slicing people up, and your behavior has proved that you still possess it.

I don’t feel comfortable making a threat when you’ve so graciously offered your services, but it’s necessary to let you know where you stand. I am a water mage. I’m adept enough with my abilities that it won’t matter if I don’t know where your bloodseal is hidden. You will not kill or maim anyone on this journey, in my sight or out of it. Is that clear?

Mr. the Chopper? He is Barry, nothing more....nothing less....she thanked him for coming along. Then suddenly threatened him? What the hech was up with that? Heh...she was more out there than he was it seemed.

He then heard something from behind him, it was Kii, the ghost girl, who might be the only reason that he was going on this little adventure, he really didn't know. He looked back at her for a moment, was she looking for that older ghost guy? he didn't know, he fell back a bit to where he walking side by side with her, "Hey Kii.....Be more careful from now on kay?" He smiled a little, "It would be bad if you died before that blondy can get you a new body...." He began to speed up again, going back ot his spot a few feet in front of her, "And if you get cold....tell me...I have some heavier cloths in my bag...."

But then he was interuprted by Wrath jumping on his back, "Adventure Wrath?" He shrugged, "I guess...." His eyes looked up Wrath, "No Wrath I don't..." But the little Sin was bouncing off again.

As he walked along agian, he thought for a moment, could Kii see his soul? He had had others that could really see ghosts see his real face behind the mask, but really didn't understand it. Kah had stated that he had done something different to Barry than how he was before, it had a side effect of making Barry able to see ghosts as well, which is why he was able to see Larrius.

He looked back at Kii again for a moment, how would it feel to be human again? That question went through his mind now....

Ah, so she'd drawn attention to herself, afterall... Damn. Brown eyes lifted to stare cluelessly at Barry as he fell beside her, only to process what he said. If she could blush, she would. Instead she wore a sheepish smile, only nodding her head in a small motion. "I'll try; a bit hard for me, you'll learn... Ask Ashari or Envy... I have the worst history of clumsiness. But..." She paused, her smile becoming lopsided. Her expression twisted slightly to become a mixture of confused and awkward. She felt weird thinking that there was someone there thinking for her safety... But there was. More then one, at that. "But thanks for your concern." She tried her hardest to give the most genuine smile. But without feeling placed into it, there was no "Genuine". All of this was so foreign to her... Her eyes shifted away from Barry, feeling ever so ashamed. She really did want to mean it when she said thank you, but she had such trouble identifying the emotion in it... Being dead came with a price, but once again, the method of dying and the people you're around influence you greatly.

He walked ahead again after telling her he had extra clothes, which she responded with only a nod and another forced smile. She suppressed the shivers until he wasn't paying attention, and then let three loose, no pauses. She'd get through this... No way was she affected more than the others, the actual humans. She was half-dead. No way could it bother her as much. Besides, she liked the cold. More-so when dressed warm, but she didn't need to think of that.
Kii's attention turned on Wrath, the young boy she'd met when he was only a little child so long ago. He didn't remember. It was years ago.. when she was travelling with Sae, Edward and the others... When she first met Envy, really. Close to that time. No... He wouldn't remember. In a way, she also hoped he wouldn't. She didn't want to remember, herself.
Her eyes followed him as he bounced around, smiling a little on the inside, but the corners of her lips tugging down on the outside. So cheerful... She wished she could be like that, again. To be the one to break the ice, despite who it was that was there. No, now she had to watch herself from the inside, the real Kii butchered by the new Kii. It was constantly an inward struggle with her; a war of the mind.

Her attention turned back to the sky.
Only to once again be forced to pay attention to the group.
Kii's eyelashes fluttered double-time, gaze lowering to see the young homunculus walking at her side. The howl of the wind met her ears as he waited for a response, the woman stunned by his question. A rather sudden gust threw long brown locks into the air and her arms unwrapped from around her body, lifting to pull her hair down. She tossed her hair to one side and then crossed her arms again, all the while silent, thoughtful. She then looked at him again, her smile lopsided once more.
"To start with, my name is Kori, but I prefer being called Kii. Second," I already know your name, "nice to meet you, Wrath. Your mother sounds really sweet..." What was my mom like? And then she looked thoughtful for a second or so longer, before she closed her eyes, releasing a gentle sigh. She dropped her head and tilted it slightly, taking on a frustated appearance.
"I don't know, really. There's many pros and cons of being dead and alive."

But the frustration was gone within seconds, that or she just acted really well, which was also very possible. Kii flashed Wrath a tiny smile. "So you're an adventure-type guy, huh? I used to love adventures. I can tell you're excited." Or just hate silence. After one glance to inspect the others, making sure she wasn't falling behind, Kii caught Barry's glance, causing her to become confused, and slightly curious. But she shrugged it off for the moment, not wanting to seem as if she were ignoring Wrath.
"What do you think it's like being a ghost? Just curious about your perspective on it." Genuine curiousity. There we go, that is something the old Kii had...
This journey included more goals than just one. And Kii was determined to accomplish them.

Veridel marched on forward, only his military years and his mako infusion working with his homunculus strengths allowing him to keep up with Envy. You could almost see sparks jumping between their eyes, the rivalries becoming very obvious. And it was extremely obvious that Envy wasn't liking how Veridel could keep up so easily. He was sure he was making Envy nervous because of his replacement comment earlier.

They couldn't have been too far outside of the small but knowledgeable town they were headed for. After all, he had heard of it before. That must have meant it wasn't too far. Then again, he had been in the military. They tended to keep a watchful eye on those small towns in order to keep them small. He found it hard to believe he was ever in such a corrupt organization. He really couldn't wait. He knew he wasn't going to get a wink of sleep. That tended to happen when he got into his research. He'd get go involved that he wouldn't sleep for days. He had no doubt it would happen this time, because it wasn't only for himself this time.

Suddenly, Veridel was ripped straight from his rivalry and his concentration that he had going with Envy. The culprit? The young homunculus Wrath, of course. He seemed to be more hyper and more bored than ever at the moment, and he seemed intent on getting the entire group to start talking to each other. But before he could answer the young boy's question, Wrath had hopped to another traveler from the group.

Eventually, the blonde alchemist turned homunculus let himself slow down. It wasn't because it was getting tired. In fact, he was far from it. He just felt a little alone, not to mention a little foolish and childish, sticking up with there competing with Envy instead of socializing. So he decided to back up and talk to people. He seemed mainly focused on making his way back to Kii, and seemed to be

"You know, Kii...When I get my body back, I'm going to be able to make you your body That and the fact that I need a refresher course is the only reason I can't just make it right now. But keep in mind that I'll be able to make you look however you'd like. To an extent of course. If it's too different, your soul will reject it. But I just thought I'd mention it, as I'll need to know for my research so I know what parts to pay special attention to. The formula will change depending on what you want. Personally, I think you'd be fine in a body that looked just like you do now", he said with a smile. "But it's all up to you. You seem to think that Envy will just kill you again afterwards, but I would certainly not let him destroy something I put so much word into."

"Kori, huh? I have a friend who's name is Cori! She's really nice and she can change from young to old! I liked her for a looong time. But she's in love with someone else." nodded the boy. "So I kinda gave up on her." he added with a slight snicker, rubbing the back of his head. "Love is complicated. It's best only to care and not to love. I mean, take Will! He's going through hell with Satzuni-kaasan!" stated the boy, puffing up his cheeks. "It's not fair for Will-niisan... He's away so much. And then Satzuni-kaasan turns to this vampire for comfort and all.. Well, atleast that's what I heard from Twilight. On one part I can understand Satzuni-kaasan! I think it's kinda the same I did when I was younger with Mommy Sloth... I went to her after my real mother rejected me." he pondered before snapping out of it and giving a wide grin.

"It's a pleasure meeting you too, Kii! And yeah! My mother's really really sweet!" confirmed the boy with a curt nod. "And she's strong too. One time when I was fighting Edward, she used her alchemy to protect me. She made a huge gash in the earth!" he stated, spreading his arms wide. "And all that just to protect me!" he added proudly. "Ofcourse, I might've deserved the pain Ed was gonna give me." he pondered. "I was provoking him after all..." he pondered before shrugging it off.

"It's a bit weird, but I feel like i've met you before! I have the same feeling with Ashari-san." nodded the boy. "Have we met before?" he questioned, eyeing her for a while before a smile spread on his face. "Well, yeah I bet there are many pros and cons for dead or alive!" he stated, nodding vigorously.

"Like... If you're a ghost, no-one can see you! So you won't be bothered by anyone! But that means you'll be lonely, though..." he pondered, looking ahead for a while before a shiver ran down is spine. "Oh well." shrugged the boy. "You're getting your body back, luckily!" he smiled, eyes glistening up.

"Oh.. Uhm..." mumbled Wrath, glancing to the others before leaning a bit closer. "Sometimes I am.. But it's mostly because everyone was so darned quiet and bloody serious.. They act as if someone died here." he whispered, hard enough for her to hear. "So yeah.. It was just too... You know." he stated, vaguely waving an arm in the direction of the others before putting his hands behind his back and walking along with Kii for a while before blinking at her question.

"I think.... It would be... Uncomfortable." stated the boy with a nod, a frown on his face. "I wouldn't have to worry about getting hurt. Being sick. Being cold or anything but... I'd rather be alive." admitted the Homunculusl, giving Kii a grin. "You too, right?" he questioned her curiously before blinking when Veridel came over to them, making him lean forwards a bit to look at the blonde.

"Well.. I could help you, you know." stated the ebony-haired finally as he eyed Veridel. "With me having Alchemy an' all..." he added idly.

Even the night that falls all around us

"Is that so..." Wrath spoke of his little friend Cori, along with love. She only nodded her head slightly, stunned that a young boy could know this so soon. But then again, he was probably as old as her... He only looked like a kid, but who knew how old he really was. Suddenly Kii felt awkward, as if he were describing her along with Will and Satzuni. Her gaze turned away as if looking around, when she was actually avoiding looking at him. But when he stopped talking about such a dark topic, she turned her eyes back on him and smiled. The question didn't repeat in her head, but remained there during the whole while. What was my mom like? That name. Her thoughts cut off, an image flashing through her head. She could still remember every detail so clearly... So perfectly. Her expression seemed to darken until it was completely wiped away, watching Wrath chatter on with a fake smile. Fake happiness. She was growing so tired, lately... So sick of it all. It was one crisis after another, from one heart-wrenching pain to the next... When was the last time she really smiled? Disgusting. Self-sympathy would get her nowhere. This was one of many reasons Envy hated humans. Selfish beasts...
"Oh? I..." So he did recognize her, then? She avoided his gaze for a second before flashing the same fake happiness. "I don't believe we've met before." She lied through her teeth and did it so easily, so smoothly. A liar. She was truely low, these terribly dreary days.

On and on he continued, and she partially payed attention. The other part of her simply silently admired the boy.
"Luckily!"
If only I had such a thing called "Luck". You're oblivious to it all... Now that's luck.
"I suppose so, ne?" She wanted to be more genuine with her expression, she really did, but... everything he said was like a bullet to the chest. She nodded quickly, shoving her hands in her pockets. "Yes, yes... Me too. I agree." At this point, was it really all that great? Did she even want to live again? Did she want to start over? There was no way... Too much dealt to crush her... Too many people... Everything was absolutely wrong, she realized. And then the doubts poured in.
Did she really want to be brought back to life? So comfortable... She'd become comfortable in her dead, miserable life. To start over seemed so hard... The world was filled with so many people, when she was used to dealing with one or two...
Her stomach churned uncomfortably and her gaze shifted to stare ahead.

For a second or so, Kii idly wondered if perhaps she was cursed with some type of attention curse.
She quickly looked up at Veridel, fluttering her eyelashes curiously. What did he want? Really, it was person after person... The odds of her being cursed were rather high. But after speaking with Wrath, no matter how adorible the boy was, she felt rather anti-social. He made her realize things she didn't want to realize, and resurfaced painful memories. He'd shot her down with one lone bullet.
"I'm perfectly fine with how I look now," she mumbled, then forced a smile immediately after to make up for what a dark tone she held behind her words. Somehow, everytime someone spoke of her "new body", it seemed almost perverted. She seemed to have not heard his possibly intentional compliment, but really, she'd ignored it. She also chose to not respond to the Envy comment.
Do I really want to live again?

The air around Kii suddenly grew all the more tense.

"You know," Kii's tone was light and almost weak, eyes shifting back and forth between the two. "I'm starting to get a headache again. I guess it didn't really go away. I'm just going to walk back there; I'll talk to you two a little more later." Her attention shifted to Veridel. "I'll talk about more detail later." Later? Maybe tomorrow. The girl's steps became even smaller, falling back a little. Her head hurt? No. She just felt awkward having so much attention... She was used to only two pairs of eyes ever turning on her. The sudden popularity would take a while to adjust to.
When behind everyone once again, she curled her fingers into her palms inside of her pockets, turning her gaze to look off into the distance to the left. Her expression grew blank, almost distant.

She had alot to think about... And not alot of time to think about it.

((Forgive my ungodly long post, but I had to make it so!!! Hopefully, this pretty much gets me up-to-date. The first part above the = signs is the one from before the setting of the current posts, at the Cafe. The stuff below is the reply to the posts here.))

Alex nodded at Ashari, understanding that he never gave his name. “My name is Alex Rictor, and I’m a paladin. Not a traditional one, though, but what one should be: fight for what is right, against darkness and unjust light. I am pleased to offer my assistance for free, for the fact that these are friends who are in need of help and they come before any mercenary work,” he said as he smiled.

He decided to ignore Envy for now. It’d all blow over in the end anyways, as usual. He turned his attention to Wrath and put his left arm around the little kid’s neck and gave him a noogie. “It’s been a while since I did this to you, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen ya!” he said, smiling.

He then let go of Wrath and made eye contact with Ashari again, starting to study her. He sensed there was something…draconic about her, and could see that she wasn’t a dragon herself, unless she was extremely skilled at hiding it. He passed her off as a dragoon, as he’d been around several in his journeys. “So, once again with the whole discussion of Alchemy…I can’t get away from it anymore,” he said, chuckling. “I do have some alchemical powers left, but it’s only by use of my blood. I do, however, know another person, a highly skilled assassin, who is quite adept at the use of Alchemy. I’d invite him, but it’d take him a few days to get here and we don’t have that form of time, so we’ll have to make do with what I can provide.”

He then grinned big at her. “As for funds, I’m sure I can transmit a message to a technology geek of an idiot to tell me how to turn the money I have on me to money we can use in this world.” He was a mercenary, and one that had jobs in different dimensions. He knew that the money he had on him, which was about 4 different kinds, wouldn’t be taken here.

When she went off on her plans, he closed his eyes. Just like the idiot he mentioned not but a moment earlier did things start to sound like he was back home again…the only difference this time was several lives at stake, not a whole world. That, and Ashari wasn’t as insane as the idiot…or, at least, not so insane that the word ‘insane’ doesn’t begin to scrape the surface of their personality.

================================================

Things were hurried along, so he didn’t have much time to prepare. Luckily, that’s where the idiot he knew came in handy: his control over the flow of Time, and his unusual amount of energy. Anything he couldn’t handle himself, he had the dolt handle; money, clothing, supplies…anything he couldn’t get out of the Café. When they had taken off, he was focused on one thing and one thing only. The safety of his friends and, as the idiot who’s name was Naru Itimagi had said, ‘party members’. Then again, the idiot played a lot of video games, so it was expected to receive such a comment.

He carried his large white greatsword on his back, buckled to his armor by leather straps and buckles, some of the runes in the center of the indention there able to be seen. He also carried a large, crystal-like blue greatsword that was slightly smaller than the one on his back in a sheath tied to his waist, the handle on his left side. While being mainly right-handed, he had three katanas tied together and buckled to the right side of his waist. If anything were to happen combat-wise, he was more than prepared. He could be a one-man army if needed.

He carried a knapsack over his right shoulder, bulging with items of all sorts within it. He carried a week’s provisions as usual, at least 20 pairs of clothes, as well as what he needed to keep his armor in top condition. He was packed for mainly himself, but the clothes were because of his careful study of the rest of his party, which was larger than he was normally used to. The clothes were mainly for them, while a few were for himself, but he’d distribute them out when they set up camp.

Which, speaking on those terms, he noticed Envy storming in his own rage ahead of the others as usual, everyone else being their normal self, including Wrath’s hyperness, before he noticed Kii hanging in the back. He stopped for a moment after Wrath left him to walk with the two.

“There’s no need to hang out so far back here, Miss Kii. Besides, it might be easier to protect you and some others if they were towards the center of the group…” he said, giving Wrath a glare of sorts. He was concerned about their safety, as it wasn’t a wise idea to let the party be so spread out in case something happened. What if the one in the back was kidnapped because they were too far from the group for them to notice? Plus there was Wrath…he was hunted too, so he worried about the young kid’s safety.

“I hope you don’t mind my attitude, I mean not to offend you Miss Kii. I’m just one to want to keep everyone together and keep everyone safe, that’s all,” he said and smiled. Suddenly, he stopped walking altogether and looked back, dropping his knapsack and placing his hands on the handles of his greatswords. He looked around, squinting his eyes a little bit as if searching hard behind them. He relaxed his hold, then picked up his knapsack and resumed walking with them. He had the feeling they were being followed, but he could be going crazy finally.

Then again, it wasn’t a feeling he got out of the blue, though. He acted like not much had happened, even though he came to a dead stop and nearly pulled out his swords. “I’ll see if I can’t get Ruby to come along on this journey. I’ll need to find out if his assistance is allowed, then figure out where in the worlds he could be,” Alex said, looking slightly embarrassed. He didn’t mind wanting Ruby to help, he did promise Wrath that he’d get to meet the dragon…it was just the fact of how Ruby WAS, as well as his present location. When you don’t know where a dragon you’re supposed to be keeping an eye on is, you’re usually in trouble.

He looked at Veridel and nodded. “Don’t worry, if Envy makes any moves, I’ll make sure we have Envy sushi for dinner,” he said. He only hoped Wrath would realize that Alex really wouldn’t go chopping his brother up. The most Alex would probably do is hang him from a tree, and if things got out of hand too much, probably tie him up and use him as a punching bag…until he remembered that Envy had Veridel’s soul, so the whole punching bag idea was thrown out.

When Wrath mentioned the incident with Edward and Sloth and the large rip in the earth, he remembered that moment. He was WITH the Homunculi at that point in time, so it was hard NOT to see it. When Wrath continued to ask questions about being dead and alive, Alex sighed and looked at the kid.

“Trust me, it’s got it’s pros and cons. Sometimes it’s better to be fully alive, while sometimes it’s better to be fully dead. Alive for the feelings and the warmth, dead to withstand the punishment one can bring,” he said, a weird smirk coming across his face, like that of mischievous and past memories. “Being dead can also help keep you safe from explosive toast, as I’ve learned,” he said.

As Kii backed off, he let her have her space. He could sense it was a lie, and fully knew it was one, but he could see the thoughts swimming in her head and figured it’d be best to let her dwell on them. He only offered one last piece of advice before attempting to be the one at the rear of the team.

“Whether or not you want to be brought back to life, know that it’ll be hard to live either way. The choice is ultimately up to you, so choose what your heart calls for. I had to make that choice twice already, and chances are I might have to make it a third time too. Just this time, I might not walk away from that choice with even my spirit,” he said calmly yet down-to-earth and coldly. It was cold, hard fact. There was a chance that, in his over-all mission, he wouldn’t walk away from it with his life or his spirit.

But to protect the ones close to him, he was willing to make such a sacrifice. But for now, the safety of the party was his concern, nothing more, nothing less. And thus, he attempted to be at the back and keep an eye out for anything following them. There were many things he wanted to say, not only to Veridel, but to everyone…but he, too, was trying to keep them contained. In time…in time.

We're gonna run, NOTHING can stop us

Even the night that falls all around us

Mistake #1. Alex already commited his first crime: Never try to take control of Kii. Or make her seem weak. She didn't glare, but gave him a stare that lacked a certain friendly affection. Sure, she wasn't even relatively as strong as others there, but she wasn't weak all the same. She kept her stare in check, not wanting to end up glaring. This guy randomly barges in, assuming things about her, trying to get involved in things that were none of his business... She didn't know him, he had no right to say anything to her unless she wanted to talk. She was selfish and she knew it, and she wouldn't put up with things that weren't all that important to her. Great. There was the new Kii. Bring back the old me, sheesh.
"Don't worry about me, Mr. Rictor. I assure you I can handle myself perfectly well, and I won't drag anyone behind." No way would she walk with the rest of that horrible group.

Mistake #2: Don't make up dumb insults about old flames/current enemies, and don't throw yourself in Kii's rather personal conversations.
For a second the words formed dryly in her mouth, but she made sure not to speak them. Envy isn't seafood, idiot. She simply ignored him.
But her ill temper rose again and this time Kii did glare, annoyed. Who was he again, she wondered? She'd never seen this guy before. So why was he getting involved in her conversations? Kii struggled for a second, fighting away the warmth of anger that quickly spread through her like venom, and her glare melted. Whatever, he could do what he wanted. As long as it didn't involve her. "I believe he was talking to me," she spoke airily, but instead of looking straight at him, she simply stared ahead at the back of Envy's head, to the front of the group.
Besides, his answer was obvious. If he's going to speak for her, he might as well explain in better detail.

Mistake #3...
"Excuse me?" Her eyes narrowed. Venom leaked into her voice. Final mistake. He'd just burned a bridge. How exactly how he known what crossed her mind mere seconds before he spoke? She could just be assuming things or be paranoid as she usually was, but if that were the case, he hit too close to base for comfort. It could be written all over her, but it was equally obvious that she didn't want to talk about it, or anything else for that matter. Alex was too persistant. But he wasn't human, so it brought up more than one idea. And she had a strong feeling for this idea. She stopped walking and brown eyes icily remained locked on his eyes, staring straight at him. She didn't dare move. She fell to the back, even moreso than before.
"Alright, it is my turn to speak now. I'll just warn you now, Mr. Rictor, since you seem to be needing this warning quite well... I don't like it when people randomly show up and get themselves involved in my life, and then invade my personal privacy. If I wanted to speak to you, I would have. If I wanted your help, I would have asked. I'd appreciate it if you backed off. Telling me not to walk behind the group is taking away my rights, and my freedom is quite valuble to me." Her tone was sharp, very cutting. She rose her tone to finish off, allowing others to hear.
"You will not control me, no one has been able to do that." Liar. Who are Ashari, Edward and Envy, then? "Even if someone were to, I would make sure they couldn't. You will regret getting any further involved with me, Alex Rictor. You might want to put some space between me and you. Stay out of my thoughts, and stay away from me."

She turned and resumed walking, her steps thudding rougher against the ground, nails digging into her palms inside her pockets. Kii was a very pissed off woman. He may not deserved all of that, but Kii felt the need to put him in his place.
Jackass. My thoughts, my privacy.

((It's ok Veri, hope all goes well for you!))

Alex could tell, quite quickly, that he had stepped on the cat's tail, to put it in some odd metaphorical way. But he could easily blame it on Naru, it was what he did in the end anyways. But when one was to lash out at him, and he knew there was something HE did wrong, he would try to make up for it.

"I'm sorry for making you....well, can't quite use the word 'angry' as you're past that obviously...so 'pissed off' could work. I guess I owe you both an appology...and an explanation," he said, not sure why he was pushing the matter forward. The logical thing to do was to let it blow over and explain later, but for some reason he had the urge to make the wrongs he had done right then and there. He'd blame it on Ruby this time, though. Chances are, he would forget to do that in the end.

"I'm sorry, but you need to realize that every time I've ever been part of a group, I've always made it my main priority to keep the others safe no matter what. I do not doubt your abilities to fight, for I've seen spirits the size of a rabbit destroy a creature taller than the trees. I'm sorry to have it come across that way, I did not mean to make it sound like you were weak, dispite it coming across to you that way."

"And I know of the fact that he was talking to you, but know that I do agree I shouldn't have interveined in it. But reguardless of how you think of me, I'll do everything I can to keep Envy from harming you. And that..."
he said as he turned his head to her. "...is final, and no one's changing that decision. Not even Veridel will."

He went back to looking ahead, feeling quite guilty of the mistakes he made already. "Know that I realize that saying sorry won't fix this problem very well, but what is done is done and I must move on. I realize this all has nothing to do with me. However, the saftey of others, and to top that off, my FRIENDS, then I join in." He sighed, figuring that he might live to regret saying such a thing so soon, but he would leave it at that...hopefully.

"Without my friends, I have no existance. Without them, I've no need to stay. I vowed to protect them, and if I am unable to do such a thing, then my existance is long over-due then. As for reading your thoughts, your emotions radiate around you and it's not hard to tell what's going through your mind because of it. Your freedom and rights are yours, and I desire not to control you or attempt to. Your saftey, however, I feel is something of utmost concern no matter how powerful the entity I accompany."

"It's not their skills, but for the sake that I've been unable to protect those close to me too many times, and lost too many friends and family because of such things, that causes me to do such things. But if you don't desire my request to guard you as well, then I'm sorry to decline that request. I'm here only to protect you all, and that's it. Past that, to make sure you get your body and for Envy and Veridel to switch souls. Aside from those three things, I've no need to be in this group."

He let her walk off, then muttered to himself, thinking he'd done enough as it was. "Someday, you may understand that when you watch your family and friends die in front of you for twenty years, you seek to keep it from happening. I was weak then, and I'm still weaker than I want to be now, but at least I can protect those I care for."

He sighed, then started walking slower than any of the others, putting distance between himself and everyone else in the group. He was starting to feel that he shouldn't have joined this party, and that, perhaps, his help really wasn't needed OR wanted...

"Ruby...if I leave this group, then you'll carry on for me....", he muttered to himself again, picking up the pace again, not aware of his shadow being different from what it should've been...
PostPosted: Tue Jan 22, 2008 3:12 pm

Veridel turned his head up from speaking with Kii as he sped up to hide himself within the rest of the group. It became quite clear to him that Kii really didn't want to be bothered, or even talked to for that matter. He thought it best to just leave her alone, since that seemed to be what she wanted.

Then something caught his attention. He hadn't noticed it, but while he was back there, the sun had set. Most of the others had become silent, but he found it hard to be. They were behind schedule, and this was very bad, considering it could result in both the death of Kii and the death of himself.

He needed to get the group moving, but in a way that he didn't upset them. After all, they were doing all of this out of the kindness of their hearts. The last thing he needed was for them to take it the wrong way. He would attempt first just to speed up himself. Maybe they would follow suite.

Just about one mile's walk away, the lights of Zerhen could be seen. Glowing brightly and warmly were the lights of the local inn and the homes in which people lived their daily lives.

Those lights looked so inviting to him, and to the rest of the group he was sure. Even though he didn't have it now, the idea of body heat was practically a part of him, drilled into his mind. On top of that, it was only about 18 degrees Fahrenheit out, and the wind chill made it feel below zero. Definitely not where he wanted to be.

As they reached the town, the large statue that Ashari had mentioned could be seen, standing firmly in the town square fighting against the strong winds. Veridel swiftly made his way into the inn, and into the warmth that he could not feel but mentally.

He still had quite a bit of money left over from his military days. After all, he still got his stipend check weekly, since he was honorably discharged because of how the military wanted to hide their mistake. Using that money, he bought out all five of the five rooms in the tiny, empty inn. It didn't seem to do much business. Some people would have to share, though each had their own bed.

Veridel, however, took the lone room. He needed his concentration to get to his research. After all, he promised the ghostly girl Kii that he'd make her a body after he was human again. But he would need to seriously study the circles and delve deep into his old books to do so.

"Alright everyone. Get to bed early. We need to be on our way as soon as possible tomorrow. No sense in wasting precious hours when we have no idea how long it will take us to reach the mountain and scale it. Who you room with is really up to you though. I will be taking one of the single rooms though. I have some work to do."

He nodded at the group just before walking up the stairs, tossing the keys to four random people in the group. Who went with who would be theirs to decide.

Alex left the matter with Kii as it was, wanting to get back to it when everyone was settled in. He was wanting her to calm down and think over his words before he walked in and continued the discussion with her. While no adrenaline was coursing through his body, he didn't feel tired. It wasn't the cold, but he was mostly spirit, so fatigue didn't effect him as much as it would a normal being.

While it was an odd bunch of people (which wasn't ment to be a shot at Barry, him being a large suit of armor and all), things seemed pretty calm.

He didn't like this.

He decided that rest wasn't going to come, and that he'd keep an eye out for anyone or anything sent in to dispatch of the guests. For all he knew, what seemed to be following them might show up in the middle of the night and someone had to be watch guard just in case. In the days he's lived, he learned that in cases such as these, watch guard shifts were a must, but he took it upon himself to do the watching for the night.

Alex watched Veridel toss the four keys out into the croud after saying his piece before retiring to his own room. Alex figured he'd go see where all he could assist Veridel while everyone got comfortable. That, and it'd buy him a bit of time to set his thoughts straight to finish getting the situation with Kii straight. He started it, he might as well finish it and in a positive way.

He imediately walked upstairs and followed Veridel while keeping a good amount of distance between them. He waited for Veridel to enter his room before deciding to stand outside for a few minutes.

He wanted to help, but he'd prefer to have Veridel have all of his materials laid out before he knocked. Waiting too long would result in Veridel's concentration being shot and the night spent researching wasted. It was a very delicate, time-based situation in which Alex was no stranger to.

One learns this quickly when they get their first job as an assassin. The lesson was taught by none other than the greatest assassin, and a good friend, he knew: 'Shadow' Itimagi.
