This is not a full essay, just the start to one. Its raher informal, I intend to fix it later...
I just recently made the connect, and realised that these 2 things are the same. Same functions and results come from these things. Capitalism and photography both are forms of terrorism. And photography gives power to a small set of people. The photographers. Or rather, we as a society give these people power because we have become image dependent. And we depend on capitalism to support our ecomony and society. Dependency on both. Also, to address how they are forms of terrorism, both control. Capitalism, power is held within a small group that opresses the working class. Photography, in some cases, discriminates and ultimately defines what we should view as important and what we should be striving for and idolizing. Take beauty pictures. They discriminate the "less beauty" even though most people are not America's next top model material. But its not just beauty. To take a picture of something is to validate it and demand attention for it. In order for us to have a strong stable capitalism, there needs to be a constant want, everything is over advertised to make the consumer want something. It needs them to feel like they need this object even though it is just a want. Capitalism is supported by the wants of our society. Before all these wants came along, people were self sufficient. But capitalism has taken that self sufficient factor out. Now we have people who only survive because of welfare. Capitalism has taken that survival skill away from us and made us, the working class, dependent on the ones with power. Photography is in no way innocent in this. Photography only helps to create a sense of want, feeding power to the upper class. We cannot function without either of these. And because they are so controlling and rebelling to either of these is unspeakable, they become a form of terrorism. They gain power from constraining the people and oppressing them in such a way it isn't even noticable. We are like pets to the government and photographers. They tell us what we should be doing, train us to do that or suffer consequences(terrorism!!!!!!) and teach us how we should be thinking even. Photography has tremendous power. If I say I have a pink pony, one might think I jest. But if I show you a picture of it, one believes it,because we have allowed photographs to replace our reality. And you might even want a pink pony yourself because have seen it in a photograph. It shows you what you should be looking at, what should be given attention and envokes feelings as well. Both have become forms of veiled terrorism and control.
