Does anyone know where the whole concept of vampires originated? I don't mean a location, I mean an idea.
I know Bram Stoker's Dracula has something to do with it, but did the author himself invent the creature or did the idea of vampires exist long before that?

it existed a long time ago, but the actual origin is debatable, many say it started with the bloody baron in ancient times, the one who bathed in the blood of virgins and drank it because she thought it would keep her eternally youthfull to the end of her days. it did, in a way, eventually the royalty turned on her and killed her, so she was youthfull untill the end of her life..... dont get any ideas....

vampires were supposed to be the living dead, since they were dead they needed to feed off blood from the living ...In folkloric tales, undead vampires often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighbourhoods they inhabited when they were alive..Early folkloric belief in vampires has been ascribed to the ignorance of the body's process of decomposition after death and how people in pre-industrial societies tried to rationalise this, creating the figure of the vampire to explain the mysteries of death....im pretty sure the idea of vampires were long before dracula...I think the idea od Dracula elaborated the whole vampire thing
