one of my friends said there is a virus going around gaia its name is j_neutron07 if they send you a request decline it !it wii kill your hard drive!pass it on!

you would be surprised what u can get thru gaia. viruses, ppl sending u key stroke links(copies your key strokes so ppl on the other end can figure out your password and steal your items).
I have used my comp at work to check on gaia, the tech knows exactly when i use gaia. he says everytime i go on it at work i get a virus. makes me go "hrmmmm"

I did a little googling and found many links like this:

Basically it is an urban legend. Of course it is a good idea to only accept friends you know anyway.
As for the site itself, I think most of the content uses Flash which said be pretty safe (it is limited as to what it can do like not saving files or accessing other programs)...

everyone needs to add Eliteguy3 & Invisible Wafflez to their ignore list. another scammer that sends you a link to join a guild and it takes to some page that looks like gaia asking for your name, passcode and how much gold you want. i changed my passcode just in case and reported him

everyone needs to add Eliteguy3 & Invisible Wafflez to their ignore list. another scammer that sends you a link to join a guild and it takes to some page that looks like gaia asking for your name, passcode and how much gold you want. i changed my passcode just in case and reported him
