Okay, I need some fellow girls to calm me down.

I am currently a junior, and I am really starting to feel the college-prep pressure. I have about a 3.8 GPA, I'm trying to flesh out my extracurricular, get a job, and add as many volunteer hours as possible.

But.

My mom just got a book out of the library about how to shape the best college applications, and it's literally making me cry. It's telling me I should have had a job since 8th or 9th grade, that I should be the president of every single club I'm in, and like 400+ hours of community service hours by now.

Please somebody tell me that I'm still going to be able to squeak into a college even though I don't come anywhere near these requirements! Dx

Those are unrealistic requirements. You cant take jobs that young and you seem pretty well rounded. Don't freak out.You seem just fine and even if it doesnt seem like there's nothing wrong with community collage its cheaper and you don't have to kill yourself to get in. So keep on the path your on and I'm sure you'll do great. Hope this helped sorry if it didn't

Some of those are just completly unrealistic.
There are hardly any jobs you can get in 8th or 9th grade.
And its hardly possible to be the president of every single club.
How it sounds your doing pretty awesome.
I dont think you will have much trouble getting into a college.

sad I hardly meet those requirements and I got into college just fine.

Don't stress about it, it sounds like you are on a good track right now so keep up with it.

When I was applying to colleges I was freaking out because I had a shitty SAT score and I had taken it three times! Turns out because I had taken it so many times they saw I was a hard worker and forgave the score being a bit under their requirements.

If you stress out you are just making it harder on yourself, trust me.

Okay so that book your mom got is complete and total BULL s**t.

Having clubs-good. You don't have to be president
Community service- Good. Don't have to be a Saint.
Job- good. but you can't even get hired for a job until at least 10th grade.

So take the book and burn it. Here is what you should be concentrating on:

SATs/ACTs: they suck. I'm telling you now they suck a**. But concentrate on the math part now, read over the summer, and then try to do awesome in the reading/writing.

College Tours: think about what type of place you want to spend four years at. Small or big school, type of programs they offer, etc. Go on tours. They REALLY help when it comes to applying to colleges. I thought I wanted to go to one school, went on a tour of it, and then found out that I wanted to totally different type of school.

Grades: Junior year is an important year. Your GPA right now is REALLY good. Good Job! Pat your self on the back C: The only thing you have to worry about is Senioritis. It is very real. Once you get into college, don't slack off because they can take their acceptance back if you start dropping off senior year.

Scholarships/Aid: you don't have to worry about Gov't aid until this time next year but I would look for some scholarships to enter for. Your school, city, local American Legion, etc all have scholarships, you just have to look for them. Try fastwebs.com its a good site.

I know this is all VERY over whelming but if you want to get through this alive, just deep breaths, don't over stress, and make sure you don't hold back the tears. It can't be avoid. I had at least two good big cries during this and it helps you focus again so it is normal to have a freak out or two. Just don't make it a habit. I hope this all helped. Its all worth it in the end. Im in college now and I love it biggrin

Honestly, to reiterate what the other ladies have said, you're just fine.

You sound like you'll be able to get into just about any school you want to. Do take the SATs soon so you have some idea on what schools you'll get into without a sweat, but besides that, you're just fine.

Take some deep breaths and relax. As long as you try your best (not your most... you'll get burned out) at everything you do, you'll go really far.

Also, start looking at schools and see what they require and plan your time around that. If you want to go to a more expensive school (instead of a state school) concentrate a little more on a getting a job. If there are certain scholarships you can apply for, try to meet their criteria.

You can do it. It's a pain, but I survived and so will you.

I've signed up at fastwebs.com and have started to look at some potential scholarships...
