I'm not a huge advocate of rap, but I enjoy some, and, worse (Du-yah save mah soul!), see it as a viable musical genre. Rap can be- shock!- artistic. I'm sick and tired of snobby kids thinking that liking Fallout Boy means you have to hate the mainstream! I mean, sure, there are some mainstream bands that really are a waste, but just because someone is famous does not automatically mean they are artistically worthless. Ram it up your hole! Rock is c**k, lawl.

I don't like all that much American rap, however I am of the opinion that rap shouldn't be classified as music (In most rap songs I hear, I fail to hear a consistent melody, just the rhythm of the song). Rather, I think rap should have its own category that isn't quite music, but isn't really anything else either. It's an artform that is honestly hard to pull off really well, but like I said: it's mostly rhythm and almost no melody.
As for "mainstream" and bands that have to be either gold or total s**t in people's eyes: I actually stopped listening to most "mainstream" bands several years ago, when I discovered that the reason I didn't like any one song that was coming out was because they all sounded exactly the same to me. It's why I can't listen to rap, either - it's all the same style, it's all the same imagery in my mind. So I turned to lesser-known bands with a unique sound.
I don't think any one band/performer is honestly better than another when how "good" they are depends on a matter of each individual person's musical tastes. I can't stand rap or mid-90s to early 2000s pop music, but I also listen to industrial and EBM bands that hardly anyone's ever heard of and whose songs are offending to the majority of people I know IRL. (just an example of a song where the NAME is offending: ******** by :wumpscut: )

EBM/Industrial for the win. Being more eclectic in music tastes makes knowing what the hell you're talking about tough.
To me fallout boy is just another trend, popular music, since I hear about them constantly I assume that it's mainstream. *Shrug* And any other bands I am hearing about here and there are probably shite too, just because so many young people do like them and I don't trust peoples tastes.

To me, FOB and P!@tD were two bands that became "mainstream" that actually got me listening to pop music again. I love the imagery and unique sound that both of them have, and that's all I ever look for in a band - something that makes them stand out from the masses of music that otherwise all sounds the same to me.
And I'll listen to just about anything when it comes to music, so my tastes go from J.S. Bach all the way to Dimmu Borgir xd

I used to lsiten to a wide, wide range of musi, but now it's indie, pop and dance that really catches my attention. Metal annoys me with all the pretentious fans who just ******** love making lists...
Black metal disgusts me, and sometimes I wonder why people continue to buy albums by madmen and extremists like Varg and... urgh, the name eludes me, but that guy that killed a gay man for hitting on him.

Personally I think fallout boy and my chemical romance are terrible bands. I won't say that one or two of their songs didn't sound okay, but a majority of their songs are them wailing to repetitive bad music.
I have to say that when a band becomes "mainstream" all the "rebel" kids suddenly judge it differantly based on that fact. It isn't being a rebel when you are just against it for the sake of being against it.

I must say, as personally as possible...
I like some of Fall Out Boy's stuff. I like some of MCR's stuff. I like some of Justin Timberlake's stuff. I like some Mozart, some Green Day, some De La Soul, some Led Zeppelin, some Muse and some Sex Pistols. I also hate some stuff from all of them. Even my favorite band, Gorillaz - I cannot STAND 'November Has Come'. It drives me mad.
The only band or artist who I've actually liked everything from is Panic! At The Disco, and that's probably because they're relatively new on the music scene.
In short - everyone has different opinions on something as subjective as music, the music forum is just one big subjective argument, and arguing about it is going to get you nowhere.
...I also think that rap can be one of the most artistic types of music - I am particularly fond of the off-rhyme and imagery used in it. Thank you, Gorillaz, and Mike from Lastfm, for showing me that it could be about so much more than guns, drugs, cars and sex.
