Okay I was on Youtube watching people talk about Twilight/NM/Eclipse...and I was watching this girl (Sohpa101) talk about when Bella says things like how when Edward gives her things or does special things for her it throws them "out of balance". So then Sopha101 says Bella's so selfish (and stupid) that she doesn't see that marrying Edward is the one thing HE truely wants and she can give HIM, and she whines and complains about it constantly! It's like he'll do all this compromise for her, and she is ALWAYS hesitant about letting him have his way! I never really thought about that point before! It was an awesome point... anyone else agree?

like how Edward didnt want to do it with her, she is against marriage. Part of the reason he picked that is so that she'll have more time as a human. He knew she didnt want to get married. Its understandable that she wouldnt want to get married considering her past. I dont think that part of her is selfish. There are other parts though...

Yeah it was part of his plan to keep her human, but he wanted to marry her anyways. True, she was told by Renee (and i guess charlie too) that "smart" people don't get married young and her parents didn't work out, but her and edward were going to be together regardless...even though she didn't like the idea, she could have considered it would have made Edward really happy if she didn't make too much of a fuss.

If I was in Bella shoes and 18 I would be hesitant to marry Edward too. People noramally don't marry at the age of 18. I understand why she would be embrassed. 3nodding

no she isn't being selfish she is just really really scared about what her parents will think. Bella's parents got married young and i guess they always lectured her to wait till she is older to get married.

I don't find Bella to be selfish at all. Actually, I think that is the main reason that Edward loves her, and continues to be in love with her. I don't think that Bella sees marrying Edward as the weight that will balance their relationship scale. After all, Edward is happy and is always insisting to buy her things anyway and she occasionally lets him do that. I think the whole marriage thing just makes her nervous because of what she has seen of marriages in modern day. Her own parents got divorced after getting married too early. It's a different time now. In Bella's generation, people don't get married until they are out of college and more stable, whereas in Edward's generation, people marry quite early. I'm sure she would LOVE to marry Edward, but they are already together forever so why should a ceremony need to take place so soon if at all?

I wouldn't call it selfishness, if anything Bella is selfless like Edward. Think of the way she was willing to do anything to protect her parents from James.
She might seem a little selfish around Edward, but I think that's just love. ^^

i would call her the most selfish being in the planet. EDWARD GIVES HER EVERYTHING! all he wants is a ring on her finger. THATS it! and its edward CULLEN, gawd, how could you possibly hesitate on marrying him?! HE'S EVERYTHING. I think that it was kind of selfish, but if you disagree then im glad to point out that she loved jacob and edward and basically was using both of them. you CANT say that that wasnt selfish. she shouldnt care what other people think of her, because after she would get married, she would become a vampire and she wont be able to see those losers anyway. she thinks about what others think WAYYY too much.

Wow, calm down, breakingdawn25. I understand that you're a little bitter because I guess... You wouldn't hesitate on saying yes to Edward's marriage proposal? (I definitely wouldn't!! biggrin ) Anyways, what's with this whole Edward giving Bella everything? She doesn't want it. It was only until the LAST book that Edward finally got Bella a car? She didn't want a car, but hers conviently died. EDWARD really wanted Bella to stay HUMAN. Seeing as how the idea of getting too much older than Edward upset her, he decided to make a compromise, not only with himself but with Bella. He feels like it is his responsibility for her to not miss out on all the normal human experiences of growing older as he has. Thing is, she's fully aware that she's not even into that. So to prolong Bella's human life, he said that she had to marry him first before he would turn her into a vampire. He knew that it would make her hesitate because of how she feels about marriage at a young age.
She was definitely not using them both. What purpose would she have for using Edward? I know at the beginning, I felt that she was using Jacob a bit, too, but I believe that Bella honestly realizes how lucky she is to have Edward. I do feel kinda bad about her laying on the guilt trip to convince Edward to stay with her while his family fought the newborns but I can understand that completely. If I could lay on the guilt trip to stop my boyfriend from going over to Iraq to fight alongside his friends, I would. Unfortunately, I know it doesn't work that way since he has no choice whether or not he goes overseas because he's in the military. Anyways.
I don't know if she hesitated because of how her mother feels. It's kinda been instilled in her psyche that early marriages don't last very long. I think Bella just fears that an actual ceremony would doom her relationship with Edward. I mean, when you supposedly know your future with someone, does it matter if there's a piece of paper that reinforces it? What's a ceremony really do? It's not like it's some magical thing that can guarantee a relationship lasts forever.
Lastly, it's not just "those losers." It's also her parents. Maybe you don't feel the same way about your parents, but I personally would like it very much if my parents approved of my life-altering decisions such as marrying someone, etc. I mean, regardless of whether or not they approve or am happy, I'll be going through with it anyway, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't mind having them be happy for me. I think that's how Bella feels. She wants to keep her parents in her life for as long as she can without putting them in danger.

I completely agree! She IS very selfish. I mean I have no idea how my precious Edward can fall for a person like Bella. But then again I don't blame Bella she is only human.

Yes,it is a AWESOME point. That's part of the reason that why I'm not really like Eclipse. Bella wants Edward and also Jacob. I think she's a bit weird in Eclipse, I don't like her in that book. Others still ok.

as it's been stated, Edward only asked her to marry him because he knew she was very against it.
I don't think many of you truly understand what she is thinking and how referring to her parents affects her. Even I truly don't understand it because my parents never got divorced. My gf on the other hand had some what of the same thing happen to her as Bella did. Parents married young, and ended up in the end hating each other and having a messy divorce. My gf is some what opposed to getting married as well, like Bella, because she doesn't think you need a piece of paper to say you're bound to each other because that piece of paper seems to ruin a lot of relationships. Not to mention if you bring kids into the equation you get what we call, a Broken Home. Which usually changes how a lot of kids thing and feel as they grow up.
But he asked her in hopes of prolonging her human life because she wanted him to change her and not Charlisle. In doing this though he actually gets what he wants.. for her to be human a bit longer and her hand in marriage even if she doesn't feel like actually being married.
So stop calling her selfish when it was all schemed by Edward in the first place. You can't call her that when you don't UNDERSTAND what she is actually feeling about the whole marriage thing and besides Edward gives her the things he does because HE wants to... and usually she tries to oppose to him but I mean come on... do you honestly think you can win against him? Probably not. He can be quite persuasive.
(P.S. I think that girl didn't fully understand where Bella was coming from on the marriage thing either stare )

Sometimes Bella is selfless, but sometimes she isn't.
She is selfless when she risks her life to protect her parents from James, true.
However, there are other times when she is selfISH: for example, how she wants to have both Edward and Jacob, even though she knows she is hurting both of them by doing so.
Another thing that really irritated me is that part in Eclipse where Bella describes the unspoken agreement at her lunch table: that normally, there is an invisible line between her, Edward, and Alice and everybody else. On sunny days, however, the conversation swells out "effortlessly" to include her because Edward and Alice are gone. It's like Bella thinks it's OK to ignore her human friends the majority of the time, but expects them to include her again the second her vampire friends are gone. This really bugged me.
