We'll I got Pirates of the Burning Sea a few days after It came out and have been playing it as much as I can. (Which is not too much, damn IRL!)

So far though it seems really fun.

The only setback that I have seen so far is they seem to a lock the server if too many people are on it. (When you make a server named "Blackbeard" in a game called Pirates what can you expect besides people flocking to it?)

One other thing I noticed is there is a "Nation" area for chat and I have not seen a way to shut it off yet. You see all multitudes of people just spamming the channel. (Gotta digg a bit deeper into settings and perhaps see if there is a way to mute it.)

So far the low level game seems pretty easy. Lots of the common "go here" "talk to this person" etc etc. I did notice that they do have Instanced quest's. Thats always a good thing.

The combat system is a bit strange its not auto attack like in most mmo's. Its more setup like City of Heroes. Where the button you press is the skill used. You have a Green bar that allows you to block attacks and evade. I know for one thing if that bar is empty.... Bad things happen. (Add "Shiver Me Timbers" Pun here.

As far as the Ship combat I found I like it most. I noticed that when you do enter combat its kind of like Final Fantasy in the aspect where it brings you and the opponent into a private "Area" where its just your two ships. To everyone else it shows two ships next to each other with a circle around them. Usually its a red circle which means that no one else can join the battle. When it turns green other ships can join in and help. (There's a skill that allows you to call for help which allows the other players to come in.)

Your ship I believe recovers after your battle. (I'll have to check because I know when you go back to town its fully recovered. No need to spend cash on repairs.)

Your ship/s have health for each area (5 area's) Bow, Aft and the two sides left and right. Also your sails can take damage which if completely destroyed leaves you helpless. (Can anyone say sitting duck?)

There are many different types of ammo. There's ammo just to kill a person's crew. Ammo to kill sails. Ammo just to hurt the hull. There are probably more types but this is just what I have come across in the early aspect of the game.

It seems there's are skills you can use for Ship battles and Skills for on foot battles. Just starting it seems there's are a TON of skills to choose from and it confused me. So I'll delve into that perhaps a bit later.

There are a few times where the server had to reset and it booted me from the game. One time it happened while I was in the middle of a battle with a French trade ship. Luckily I was able to get back on and found the French bombarding my ship with cannons. Always pickin on a girl when she is not paying attention!

Love the game, there's TON's of potential for the game to be one of the greats.

Follow-up to my review.

I have not bothered playing through the storyline not to say that its not any good. I've just been so busy playing around with the battle system that I completely forgot about it.

At first the ship to ship combat seemed way too easy. As patches have come along the NPC's (Which are the common the ships your going to steal as a pirate) have become more difficult.

My other main issue that I was tapping into was the chat system. I have some really good news. In this article here they pretty much answered all of my questions about the chat system and more.

If you read the article you find out that they actually listen to their user base and try to change the game to fit the users needs. Of course they will only go so far it is their game after all.

More later on.

"As with all other forms of battle modern naval tactics are reliant on fire and movement. The effective delivery of firepower results from scouting and assumption of good firing positions."

This is part of the game as well. You have to watch the sides of your boat and watch which direction your being fired upon.

"In naval warfare, the key is to detect the enemy while avoiding detection. Much time and effort is spent to deny the enemy the chance to detect your forces."

This is in the game.

"Naval warfare is combat in and on seas, oceans, or any other major bodies of water such as large lakes and wide rivers."

No rivers but there's battle all at open sea. When engaging an enemy when you catch them (If you catch them) it brings you into your own private battle ground. No one can enter the battle unless you call for help.

So if you feel the ship that is coming after you is too strong for you. You can instantly call for help and then the battle becomes an open battlefield where anyone can join. If you were traveling with a friend they could then join to protect you.
