Im a sophomore in HS with plans of having a BA in Cello performance, and then going on to study conducting and composition. I've been studying theory for eight years, so i really enjoy it and understand how many sleepiless and frustrating nights i will endure. The problem is choosing. EVERY school says, of course, that they are ideal. But i want to hear is first hand accounts from ppl who were/ are music majors...whether or not u play cello. I would really like you to just gossip about your schools and how they affected you 9the pros and cons) so I can get an idea of where to go. Little snippets about your professors are cool too.

i live in Maryland, but im looking at schools along the East coast and will willingly check out schools farther out.

If anybody can give me guidelines or pointers that would be great.

The reason why i really need this is the last time I listened to falsified recommendations, I ended up attending my current High school that doesnt care for music at all, and Im really unhappy that i didnt talk to students in the school first.

A little more info about me:
Ive been playing piano for 8 years alongside music theory
self-taught cello for 5
after those 8 years of classi piano im now doing jazz
ive been composing for 3 years
Hopefully, in the future when im old and grey, i wish to study Indian Classical music. I have learned two raagas (spell check) and have been fascinated by indian music...and i luv the culture..and tablas are sexy.
the best part of knowing music theory is...improv and jamming!!
Im open to learn new things, so a college that allows growth in "width" and not just "height" would be very nice.

Thank You very much wink

I can't do much in recommending schools since I'm not American and don't know the colleges there well...but if you direct your question to the Musician's Forum on the main part of Gaia, you might get some good answers. I've seen similiar threads to this before and there were several knowledgeable replies. Apart from recs, list your focus areas (cello, composition, jazz? etc.) and see whether the schools offer programs that fit your needs. Also, keep in mind of school population sizes, the social scene, the campus the school's located in...and so on.

Keep up your passion with music--you'll need it if you plan to major in it. I've seen several examples of people feeling it's too much on their plate and they end up taking a year off, or worse, quitting altogether and/or switching to another department/faculty.

Since you're interested in Indian music, keep an eye out for schools that have ethnomusicology classes and ensembles.

Ethnomusicology is the study of world music heart

I'm gutted my university dropped the lecturer of that subject just before I entered my second year, I would have loved to have studied it

The most typical ethnomusicology classes I've found have been those on Indonesian Gamelan, and others on African Drumming and Dance. Though all sorts of ethnic musics constitute ethnomusicology razz

I'm majoring in music, but at no school really known for it's music department. Which is just fine for me, because I'm not really set on doing a profession in music, but I still want to learn more about it razz

Idk where to tell you to apply other than probably a bunch of conservatories. Oh, USC is supposed to have an epic music program (and I think that's all I'll say about USC. I have nothing nice to say about their student body xD). That's out on the other coast as you...I go to UCB. The music program is really lax.
