Time for a story about one of the worst games ever made .. oh an by the way its true =)
In 1982, Howard Scott Warshaw made a game for the Atari 2600 based on one of the most financially successful film during its release in 1982, E.T the Extra-Terrestrial. The failure ensued when the game itself was to be made within 6 weeks before its September 1st deadline since a lot of the production time was used negotiating the rights to make E.T. a video game. The reason it had to be out by this day was so that the game would be out and ready during the start of the Christmas shopping season (in case anyone wanted to know Atari paid around $25 million for the rights to produce the game). The basic design of the game was done within 2 days while the rest of the time was used to debug, and document about 6.5 KB of code.
So how did the game fair out on the global market? Well only 1.5 million of the 4 million cartridges produced were sold. Despite reasonable sales figures, the quantity of unsold merchandise coupled with the expensive movie license caused E.T. to be a massive financial failure for Atari and became one of the major reasons why Atarit went backrupt.
And here is the best part. Some of you may be wondering where the rest of the unsold cartridges went to. The company buried them, in a New mexico landfill.
