Character Name: Maura ‘Echo’ Dumelashe.
Status: Student.
Age: Eighteen.
Gender: Female.
Race: Half Elf. Her father is part Naga.
Height: Five feet nine inches tall. Very thin and small, almost fey in appearance. Slouches sometimes.
Weight: 102 lbs.
Build: Slender, little bust, little hip.
Appearance:
Hair- Very light blonde, coming down to her neck, inherited from the elven side of her family. She cut it just before coming to the school.
Eyes- Amber. The pupils seem almost elongated... and they are framed in short, white-blonde eyelashes; the kind that are nearly invisible.
Skin- Extremely pale, devoid of and notable feature such as scars, freckles, or moles.
Features- The strange color of her eyes is the only easily visible trait she inherited from her naga ancestry, save for the honey-colored markings traced along the whole of her back. The skin is slightly raised on it, but devoid of scales. Her ears are round and cupped like a humans’, save for the slight, barely visible scars along their top halves. She and her mother removed the points so she could better disguise herself as a human.
Clothing- She wears a variety of clothing, from swathes of dark material to the barest amount of brightly-colored fabric and sheer, gauzelike over-garments. Usually she wear simple peasant garments in colors like brown and gray. When she came to HoB, she was wearing a form-fitting brown vest with a white, loose-sleeved blouse, darker leggings, soft-soled leather boots with gold vine prints on them, and a forest-green cloak.
Likes: She has a fondness for small or fluffy animals, with an exceptional soft spot for lizards and snakes.
Dislikes: She doesn't do well in the cold and she hates written work. The smell of rum makes her sneeze, and she won’t drink the stuff unless paid. She distrusts mages and people with black hair, or people who wear too much black clothing; the reason for which is one of her more closely guarded secrets.
Fears: She is scared of the dark, and magic terrifies her. She takes a candle to her bedside and keeps it lit at night, balancing a curved mirror next to it so she doesn’t disturb the person next to her. It also serves to reflect more of the dim light towards her.
Strengths: She is capable of picking locks, scaling walls and slipping through small places. She is very skilled at lying, hiding and sneaking. She is extremely good at disguising herself, and is almost a master at it. She can sprint very quickly, can sing well and is a skilled actor.
Weaknesses: She is not particularly strong or tough, to the contrary, she is pathetic. Slightly paranoid. She is shy, and has a severe inferiority complex.
Weapons: Daggers. She has four daggers concealed around her body. Three are daggers designed specifically to throw. The fourth dagger, Kiyrleigh, was given to her by her father, and can also be thrown, though she would only do so if her life depended on it. She also has a shortsword for more traditional learning, though she knows very little about using it.
Personality: Eccentric and slightly paranoid. She changes her appearance on a near daily basis as it soothes her. She has a prejudice against mages and people with black hair. In the presence on magic or darkness, she becomes agitated and more and more likely to react rashly in any given situation. Personal grooming or alteration soothes her, as does hard liquor. Except for rum. When agitated, she begins to make her hand tremble. The severity of the shaking marks how unsettled she is. This is a conscious movement, something she does to offer herself some small bit of comfort, and the kind of thing she never does in front of strangers. When she is calm, she tends to be quiet and sensible; but when agitated, she firmly adopts a ‘fists first, ask questions later’ kind of attitude. This is especially true when she is caught unexpectedly in the dark. But if someone can get past the violent exterior, inside she is only a little girl who wants her mother. She rarely cries, but when she does, it's a likely occurrence for her to do so for nearly an hour. She isn't a very good-looking person when she cries.
Echo tends to avoid talking with people in general, she is slow to start making friends. it’s not that she’s shy, just slightly uninterested. But when she gets to meet people she is really quite talkative.
Bio: Echo was raised in the city of Kerovsken in Uunur by her half elven parents; Sister Myru ‘Bat’ Casthanus, the dark, paranoid assasin; and Brother Vaelien ‘Falcon’ Dumelashe, the fair, reckless scout. She lived her entire life as a member of the thieves’ guild there, being so ingrained to the delicate social hierarchy that she referred to her parents as ‘Brother Falcon’ and ‘Sister Bat’ respectively. She acquired a number of eccentricities from her paranoid mother, mainly the hair dying, to which her father expressed his disdain. Her father grew truly angry when he found out about the ‘alteration’ to Echo’s ears, and her parents fought about that for a while.
Forced to be trained in the ways of a thief, she became experienced in the ways of a thief. But she always felt something lacking. She hated always having to run whenever she was confronted by the royal guard, hated not being strong enough- or skilled enough- to fight back. She wanted to be a warrior, not a thief.
She disappeared for two years, training herself in agility, strength and throwing daggers. It was difficult for her to catch food, as many animals were too small or helpless for her to willingly harm, and larger game were hard to kill with just a few daggers. Many rabbits caught in her snares would find themselves free if they were still alive. So she mainly ate fish. She threw daggers at the small, darting, silvery creatures, willing herself to become faster and more skilled. When she missed, she didn’t eat. When she hit, she did.
She became more and more skilled in hunting the things, until she got to a point where she could strike her target on a regular basis. She abandoned her isolation soon after that, returning to the thieves’ guild and to her parents.
Overconfidence was her Achilles' heel. After seeing her father nearly killed because of her lack of fighting ability, even after training herself, Echo decided to join a fighting academy. She would be able to protect herself and others. She wouldn’t have to steal anything anymore. The thought was almost intoxicating. She had heard of HoB, and decided promptly to join the well-known school of weaponry. To pay for the tuition, she stole a huge sum of gold from the coffers of the thieves’ guild and ran.
Her parents grieved the loss of their daughter when they discovered her disappearance. But the other members of the guild, after they had discovered the missing treasure was stolen by Echo, weren’t so inclined to feel as hospitable towards her...
Pet: She owns a pet garter snake with black eyes whom she calls Beauty.
Extra: Echo heard of house of Bricks by word-of-mouth and popular rumor. Both HoB and the weapons school in Ninden are well known throughout her country. Also, the armies in most of the countries in Uunur require out-of-country weapons training in at least two weapons, so recruiting posters mentioning HoB aren't all that uncommon either.
