Well, this topic has been on my mind. In my art classes, the teachers tell us to ABSOLUTELY Not any anime in our art sketchbooks. They're fine with us doing it on our own time but not in our homework sketchbook. One reason is because people copy a generic basic form of anime, and become "2nd bit anime artists." I have seen this generic basic form on Deviantart.

I also went to a portfolio tips session from Nickelodeon. They are okay with anime being in the portfolio, but only on one sketch. They want variations. They want to see what you can do and what different styles you have for them to possibly use.

My art teacher did admit she's seen some beautiful graphic novels. But that's the artists' own style. If we do fanart of it in that exact style, it's not own creation. I like doing fanart for my fav animes and other stuff. Lately I keep pushing myself to not just redraw. Either draw it in "my own style" (which I'm still trying to fine sweatdrop " or at least add more to it. Either shade it more, put more details, combine or mix scenes, or put my own symbolism in it.

I just felt like telling the anime fanartists out there who are interested in art schools. Also maybe you guys want to discuss it more. wink

Don't feel ignored, my daughter Dosu500 has some very strong feelings on this issue also as the same thing is happening to her on the Middle School level. The thing is I understand why the teachers push artists to do their own thing but, I don't see why they cannot teach you Manga if that's where your heart is. I realize they don't want to see copies but, individual stuff, so why not teach kids how to do their own thing in this genre.

When Dosu gets better I'll ask her to post but right now we are all fighting a the flu.

Thank you for replying to the post.

I'm more of a realism artist, but I love promoting the mangas I like. For example, most people haven't heard of the manga company Ice Kunion. And I was afraid of a series being canceled because of this fact. So I made a fanart piece for it. The people who commented had never heard of the company.

At my University, they are offering a class on I think analyzing anime/manga. I was amazed to hear this! However, I won't be taking the class. If I were interested in working with anime/manga I would. So your daughter can the hope of knowing that higher levels of schools cover some of it. Art foundation classes don't like it though.

Thanks so much! I will pass the information on to her. Right now, in fact, she is working on a fairy project for Language Arts/Fine Arts.

I think it will help her to know that the possibilities are our there. Look for a PM from me.

DD:
that's understandable, but sad!!!
our art teachers are... insane, they wouldn't notice if we burned the school down, mind everyone else would, but not them. they don't care if we draw anime or make fan arts, because in their mind, it's "practice" for an artist, yes, it is a bit copying, but if you don't draw something, and take bits from here and there, you won't know what you want to do

I think it's because a lot of people draw the simple kind of anime and without putting their own style. They stick to the basic forms and don't try more realistic or other cartoon styles. I have seen some people after high school like that. So maybe you want to ask yourself "what can I add to the drawing so it doesn't look like a basic anime drawing" or "what non-Anime parts can I add to it?"

From doing anime fanart, I got more comfortable inking my lines. Then I moved to another level and shaded the fabric folds. After a while, I tried to make the shadows look smoother and blended into each other, instead of blocky. I did get good practice out of it. I think as long as you keep challenging yourself. Look at other people's drawings you feel are beyond your level. I like to try to figure out how they drew their art. Work on one new thing at a time. Don't stick to the drawing style you started out with in the beginning.

This is a very interesting and serious subject.

I remember in 6th grade our scary art teacher (The same as Dosu's) was showing us some of the work of the advanced students and pulled out a notebook with some anime/manga-like drawings in it. She said it was horrible and that advanced arts students shouldn't be drawing things like that; that it was an F.
Of course, she was just all around a very...malo...teacher.

But it's true. Some people stick to the basic kind and do not add their own flare. But this is just as readily not true. I believe, unless you are tracing something, you are naturally putting your own style into it. Sure, I can look at a picture and say, that artist is good but their art is just like everyone else's. But there are a lot of things differentiating art in mangas. Someone can usually tell who the artist is or whatever series of their they know from looking at the hair or eyes or clothing styles. I mostly tend to define artists by their character's eyes and hair.

But now I am worried. How do we know if our art is "just like everyone else's", or "the basic anime style".

Maybe we should have a place where people post their art and others help them with this precise thing.

Your wish is granted and I'm keeping this thread as it's a good discussion thread and integrates all age groups.

Agh, I know how that is. But at least it isn't a ban on anime style without reason... After all, even I am fed up with all the copy-art.
I have my own style of drawing, and I find it kinda funny to draw, say, Ichigo or Ranma in my art style.

Either way, hope you keep on the path of art, and hope you find your style!

And merry christmas all!
