We all know about them, Dragons, Unicorns, Griffins, Phoenix, and the like. This topic is about how one uses the energy of those creatures in their practice, and which ones they relate to more than other. This is an area os magic and witchcraft that I have little to no experience in. Mostly because I never thought about trying to use their powers and energy.
My personal view is that because every culture in the world has mythology relating to various creatures (dragons and Unicorns specifically) they had to be real at one point. Maybe they still are, only on a different plane of existence. How else can you attest for the simmalairites in the myths?
Discuss:
Favorite Magical creatures Your view on them in general How you work with them (if you do) in magic and witchcraft How does one go about reaching out to a "mystical" creature?

My favorite magicial creature has changed over the years. When I was younger, I was addicted to unicorns and mermaids. Quite literately, I would watch the last unicorn at every possible chance that I could. As for mermaids, I think you can guess what spawned my liking for that.
Now, I like most all of the magical creatures. Dragons are my main, seeing as I am a dragon magic practicer. I've never really had much of a connection with Griffins or Phoenixes to be honest. It's almost like they don't even hit the edge of my interests. Even now I'm like Pheonixes -shrug-. Though that is kind of hypocritical because every creature needs to have his own respect regardless of what it is.
I personally think that dragons, unicorns, what have you, were actually on this plane at one time. But I think the oppession and negativity from the human race (only with the hunting) made unicorns scarce and they decided to travel to another astral plane. As for dragons, I don't think (because as I've stated before, my dragons and I have never actually discussed anything quite like this. I am not ready to discuss matters like that because I feel like I'm trying to be noisy. You know?) that they were "scared" away from human, I think they got fed up and left. Hell I get fed up with people every day. So I completely understand.
How do I work with them... Kind of a hard question to answer seeing as it's really them who works with me and my limitations. Mostly I ask them to help me raise energy and usually they help me raise my own energy. It's also kind of weird to get relays of what I look like with a massive webbing of orange energy around me, seeing as I don't have natural spirit sight. It's also kind of freaky because my mind cannot get all of the colors that theirs can so some of the image tends to be dull.
I used to have them as support figures. I'd talk to them, involve them in my daily life. I've done energy work with them to produce snow, where I gave them my energy to work with, so they wouldn't have to use theirs. A lot of the time, it's about me giving them my energy to work with because I don't want them to have to use theirs or feel like they have to.
I reached them using a calling ritual. I can't remember everything that I had gathered, but it was on the internet somewhere. xD <3

I've always been in love with unicorns myself, but held a great deal of respect for Dragons. I never thought they were "born of the devil's fire" as some of the myths would have you believe. I'd like to meet and work with a dragon, I just don't know how to approach them.

I don't work with them though. I'm far from doing that. I can't even meditate yet. --"

You'd think that given the fact that my entire childhood was afflicted with a dragon obsession, that would've immediately translated into my practice. I wrote stories about dragons. I drew dragons. I sculpted dragons. I bought dragon stuff before it was anywhere near as popular as it is now... when such things were very hard to find. Somewhere along the line they faded into the background. Instead of drawing and writing stories about virtually nothing but dragons, I started drawing and writing stories about *gasp* human beings. The dragons then just faded out, but not completely. Both my incense burners feature dragons. Some of my other altar decorations (though not on it right now) are draconic. But... I don't really work with them magically or religiously. It's enough to know I'll always be able to draw upon that powerful relationship I had with them in the past. That link will never go away; they don't need to be center stage anymore.
No other mystical creatures really captivated me in the same way; I mostly identified with scaly critters both mystical and mundane - wasn't big on furry things, feathery things, or hoofed things. Just scaly, slithery, shiny things.
... hmm. Oh boy, I just had a dangerous thought. If I actually put stock in the concept of otherkin, I could probably very easily claim I was a dragon. I fit the archetype so well it isn't even funny. eek xd

I also liked the fae as well. But I guess I just wasn't including them on the whole "Magical Creatures" bit, but in reality that's what they -are-. When I started in magic I heard/read a lot about the signs of how you know a fae is near you or what to do if you happen to be in a forest with a lot of mushrooms around in weird circles.... But after a while I've sort have faded from that whole interest as well. Quote: I agree with that. I think that all these mythical creatures once used to live here, but then the idea came around that magickal things (like witches) were evil, so people started hunting mythical creatures, and then they left to save their lives. I don't work with them though. I'm far from doing that. I can't even meditate yet. --" Yeah but like I said I don't think it was the hunting for dragons as much as it was just the obnoxious behavior of humanity. Hell it could have been for each of the other animals that are probably on other planes more the obnoxious behavior of humans, but I think it's pointed for dragons. Yeah, I don't meditate at all. So don't worry about it. xD

Like I said before I would really like to start working with the magical creatures, but I don't know how to go about doing it. I'll probably start with the Unicorn as they have always been very special to me. The first Tarot Deck I bought was the Unicorn Tarot, and in many ways it still speaks to me more than other decks.
Dragons are second on my list mostly because I think their power would overwhelm me if I were to contact them. Granted I still have a deep love for them, I just don't want to get in over my head. I think they'd respect that don't you?
My final point is that working with these entities should be highly respectful. They choose to share them selves with us. Just because we call them doesn't mean they have to answer. They can ignore us if we aren't ready, or they don't like us. So My first step is going to be researching myths about Dragons and Unicorns.

Celestia Whitesword Starlock: I have an equal magnitude of love for faeries in that respect. Hah! I should have started drawing fairies! They're sort of humanoid... ... knowing me though, they would have ended up with dragon wings. And then I would have been drawing 'demons' all the time. Heh. But didn't the word for demon come from the Greek 'daemon' which simply meant an intermediary between the Gods and humanity? Or so I remember reading that somewhere.... Would demons be considered 'magical creatures' or do we class them as something different?

Starlock Would demons be considered 'magical creatures' or do we class them as something different? Do you count spirits separate or with magical creatures? That's what the defining factor would be..

Dragons? Unicorns? Gryphons? Not for me.
Angels and demons share my earth, the former agents of light and love, the latter beings of pain and hate. I believe in selkies and skin changers. The Sí and elementals are also important to me.
And the words "faerie" and "fae" make me want to in equal parts punch babies and invent a time machine for the sole purpose of traveling back in time and b***h-slapping William the Conqueror. Yeah, my Gaelic background isn't particularly forgiving.
And I'm pretty sure "daemon" is literally Greek for "soul."

So you don't work with them. That's cool. I'd consider angels and demons spirits and a separate category. I mean to me you'd work with them differently then with entities like unicorns, dragons, gryphons and the "fae".
I only have limited experience working with spirits like angels or demons, and it's something I personally would like to explore more often. However I can't seem to find a decent non "new age-all light and happiness" source on how to work with them and contact them. Spirits are important to me, but I don;t really work with them at this point in time.
Another thing I have been thinking about are the Elementals and if they classify as spirits or if they would be in the category of magical creatures. Personally I think they are a bit of both. They have mythology that fits in both categories, but also are their own beings in their own right. Any one else have a thought on this?

If you want to know about angels or elementals, look up theosophy, and get ready to get dirty. I know people who have been studying it for ten years and are still learning about it. But I think continuing education is important, so it's a good thing.

Ah, categorizing. There's times I bother with it, and there's times I just ignore it and recognize that thinking about it too much will only short-circuit my brain or bog me down from doing things of more relevant importance.
Everything is Spirit to me, so classing something as spirit is somewhat redundant. But that word, of course, can mean different things. Usually we use spirit to refer to something more ephemeral or non-material. If that's the case, all otherworldly creatures are 'spirits' since they have no corporeal manifestation on our plane of reality. That'd make magical creatures, demons, angels, elements, guides and such all spirits.
But I dunno. This is one of those instances where my brain might short-circuit somewhere. Hence, I'll just say 'I don't know' and possibly an 'I don't care' on top of that. They are what they are. xd

Do you think it's possible for a magical creature to make them selves known to you in a dream. It kinda felt like a dragon or something was saying "hey! Pay attention to me!" Which is why I'd like to learn more about Dragon Magic and working with magical creatures in any shape or form.
