I havn't really read for enjoyment in a very long time. I only recently started to pick up books again. With that said, what are some good books that you personally think no one should be able to live without. This should be for everyone's benefit, not just mine. smile

What kind of books You prefer? I would recommend any of Ian Rankin's novels about Inspector Rebus as a detective story... King "Shop with a dreams" for a horror "The man who wrote a book" by Tarloff for realistic story and "Jane Eyre" for romatic one... And "Count Monte Christo" (Dumas) and "Lost World by Conan Doyle for adventure...

I dont have much preference when it comes to books. I like both realistic and fantasy type books. I can't stand "legal drama" or Stephen King style horror though. Sick.
My favorite books of all time are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Watership Down.
I feel bad, because I didn't include Harry Potter, even though I absolutely adore the series. I think that it was written to appeal to such a broad fan base somehow hampered it. It just feels like its missing something. There are parts of the book where I can see influences that aren't J.K. Rowlings... such as publisher, time crunch, etc. The last book was pretty bad about that, I think, especially the end. *sigh* But that's for another thread another day.

I know what are You talking about I'm too the person called "frustrated and angered HP reader"... And "The Wind in the Willows" what do You think about it? You may like Ursula K. LeGuin The Books of Earthsee - they are better than films, and also about school of wizardry (at least part of first part wink )

I'm currently hooked on "The wayfarer redemption" series, by Sara Douglas. Almost through with the 3rd book out of 6.
I've gotten into the newer stuff recently my current favorite authors are Chris Humphrey, The Runestone Saga, and Holly Black, Modern Faerie tales and The spiderwick chronicles. lol heard about the movie and ran to find the books only to find out there are five of them and they are less than an inch thick.

Maybe it's like "Series of unfortunate events" - the film is better than books...

"Go Ask Alice" is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. It's a diary written by a girl from, I think, the 60's, and it's just amazing. There's no author but it's a very popular book. I would most definitely recommend it.

I'm big into series and trilogies and the like. Some of my favorites:
Black Jewels Trilogy - Anne Bishop Sword of Truth series - Terry Goodkind In Legend Born/In Fire Forged/The Destroyer Goddess - Laura Resnick Symphony of Ages trilogy - Elizabeth Haydon Kushiel's Legacy series - Jacqueline Carey
These are all heavy fantasy novels, if that's your cup of tea. I read fantasy more than anything else, but I'm always up for some good other-genre recommendations.
(Btw, I HATED Jane Eyre. I thought it was the most TEDIUS book I've EVER had to read. xd )

I'm pretty varied. I'm not fond of realistic fiction, yet I enjoyed Grisham and Clancy. I'm generally a fantasy/sci-fi reader, though. I probably sound like a pusher, but I'll suggest Brian Lumley to any one who likes horror, sci-fi, suspense, philosophy, spies, or just plain well written stories.
I have to say, a friend of mine pushed Anne Bishop on me, and I couldn't get half way through the first book in the Black Jewels Trilogy. It was an interesting story, but for some reason (and I have a strong suspicion that it was said friend's constant nagging and discussion) I couldn't get into the book. I think I'll try again after I finish the current series, seeing as it's gotten good marks here (and no pressure! yay!).

ryuu_chan (Btw, I HATED Jane Eyre. I thought it was the most TEDIUS book I've EVER had to read. xd ) Maybe because it was Your obligatory lecture? I noticed that many of englishmans doesn't like the books I adore just because they were forced to read them... For me Jane was pretty funny especially dialogues...

I couldn't get to the dialogue because of all the DESCRIPTION. I can't go through a book that essentially reads "There is a window in the wall. Opposite the window in the wall is a bookshelf. There is a statuette on the bookshelf opposite the window in the wall." For pages. *shrug* It's one of the few stories that I like the movie better than the book. sweatdrop

All I can say is: be glad that You aren't polish, because if you were Your obligatory lecture would be "Nad Niemnem" - and this is the book in witch descriptions make about 95% of story (and it's 4 volumes about 100 pages each)... After that even Jane Eyre would look like a pretty fast-narrated, harmless story lol

I just can't read something that was written in exactly the same way we were taught NOT to write in grade school. lol
