The day was slowly drifting away. Most hyena pups that lived here were now home with their mommies and daddies... Or at least their mommies. They would be fed something to eat, possibly cleaned as well, and then sent off to sleep. They wouldn't be in any danger at all, protected by the love and care of their parents.
Well... Needless to say, Erevu wanted absolutely no part in that wishy-washy junk. He wasn't a baby anymore! Yes, he was still considered a pup, but he needed to learn how to survive on his own already! No, he wouldn't leave the pack's territory. Otherwise, he could be slaughtered by some crazed lion that roamed around... Or worse.. Captured. No, no, no, no, no. Erevu wasn't even going to bother with such a thing. Instead, he simply didn't go home. His mother yelled at him when he dared to do such a thing, but he knew that she would understand one day.
As for Erevu's father, Tibuka, he'd barely seen him since he was born. Yes, his mother told great things of him, and he idolized his father, but he hated his ways. To not be around the family made him want to take a chunk out of his daddy's leg... Just to try to get the point across.
Bah to it all! He was going to stay out here and survive on his own! There was just one complication though... He needed a place to sleep and something to eat. Looking around hastily with his silver eyes, he spied a stray, slightly dying, hare. Grinning maliciously, he lowered himself to the ground and began to sneak over to it, making sure to hide his white underbelly so he wouldn't be seen.

Chances were that the alpha of the pack was, too, on the look out for something to eat. Lately, she had a lot more things to deal with than she usually did, and it surely kept her busy. She didn't mind, to a certain extent, it proved to the rest of the pack that she was just sitting idle while the rest of them were patrolling about. Though she was on patrol for anything other than some food, her cold eyes were always vigillant.
It was this vigillance that brought the prospect of a meal her way. Taking a breath in, Mafa sensed the scent of a weak animal, flopping uselessly around her graveyard. And along that scent, there was one of another hyena. The scent was vaguely familiar, but not so much that Mafa could pinpoint who it was. Curious, the female proceeded onward, slowing as she came upon the sight of a young, brown hyena stalking down a lone hare. Looking him over, Mafa did not find the male familiar at all. Her ears perked, a stern experssion on her face as she approached the youth. Where had he come from exactly? His coloring was familiar however...
"You" She barked out with a tone of cold authority, "Who are you?"

Suddenly, the injured hare flipped out, trying its best to hop away from the loud bark that it had heard. Erevu, confused at first, merely watched the hare, wondering why it began to just freak out like it did. Then, it hit him. Another hyena had barked something to him, 'causing the hare to simply flip. It couldn't go anywhere really, but it did annoy the pup that someone was trying to get his attention while he was stalking his dinner.
"What's it to ya?", he called out, not looking over as he quickly dashed for the hare, snagging a baby claw on its hind leg. It screamed in pain and tried to hop away, but the claw only dug in deeper, pinning the poor hare down. Blood oozed from the wound. Satisfied now, Erevu retracted his claw, the hare simply lying on the ground, slowly bleeding to death.
"Now, what do you wa-" As the pup turned around to scold and get rough with who ever had called out to him, he found himself staring at well muscled legs, rather than a face of some sort. His silver eyes slowly traveled upward, them widening as he saw what could of been considered death by most.
"Ma... Ma... Mafa! I.. I-I didn't... Didn't know!" He slowly took a step or two backwards, his eyes fixed on the mighty pack leader that stood before him.

Mafa had expected an instant reaction, however, the one she got was not in good favor. There was an immediate change in her facial expression. What had started as a stoic lack of expression turned momentarily to one of shock, at being spoken to in such a tone, and then quickly to an angry one. The flopping of the dying hare on the dusty ground was the only sound heard as an uncomfortable silence settled. Mafa watched it, not knowing what to say, never having been spoken to in such a manner.
However, she quickly unfroze, and charged toward the young hyena with long strides. If she could breathe fire right about now, Mafa would have done so. Instead, she snapped her jaws close to the young hyena's head. She didn't want to hurt him, she would never do that to one of her own, but she did want to scare him into submission.
"Young whelp, you dare speak with that tone to your alpha?"
Mafa's voice was loud and barking in his ear, her tone obviously pissed off. If anything made the female angry, it was not being respected. What did bring some enlightenment into the situation was the genuine look of shock that was presented on the pup's face as he noticed just who he was talking to. The fear in his eyes was satisfying. But, Mafa didn't back down. As he backed up, Mafa moved forward with him, her fangs showing in a snarl,
"Are you going to blab on, or answer my questions?"

The more Erevu backed away from the great pack leader, the more she followed after him leaving him to simply stay put. He couldn't get away from her, and that's just how she wanted him. He was sure of it. When she had suddenly snapped at the side of his head, he had cringed only slightly, fearful of her, but trying to stand his ground at the same time.
He had stayed quiet as she spoke to him, just staring her in the eyes. Yes, he was terrified of the mighty Mafa, but he surely didn't want to show it. He had great respect for her, for she was a female leading a very fine pack. She deserved all the respect she could muster, even from a low little pup like himself.
"My name is Erevu.", he stated, pushing himself to stand up taller than he had been before. "I am the youngest son of Tibuka and Kailasa." His silver eyes stayed glued to her own dark turquoise ones, just hoping that she wouldn't smack him or something for doing so. Behind him, the bleeding hare flinched some, but moved nowhere. It was as good as dead.

Mafa was hoping the little male would eventually stick up for himself, even a little. As much as she wanted subordination, she only expected a complete spineless response from her slave. She didn't want a pack full of wusses. Thankfully, the pup did just that, his boldness and respect bordering on all the right parameters. Seeing this, Mafa backed down a little, her aura less malicious. Now she just exuded dominance.
"Erevu, huh.... Wait... Son... of Tibuka?"
There was a note of surprise in Mafa's usually stoney voice. She shook her head, yes, she remembered there being word of Tibuka-spawn wandering around, but Mafa hadn't been too keen on believing that. Tibuka was never much of a parenting type, especially after she'd burdened him with taking care of her own son, Mabozi. But alas, here one of them was, in the flesh. Mafa cleared her expression, though she was rather amused with this whole situation. Tibuka had always been one of her favorites, she had appointed him head guard, after all. Though it was indeed troubling that she hadn't seen him in quite some time. As the pup would soon notice, Mafa was much more formidable with those she favored. She favored his father, she'd give the pup a chance,
"Didn't think I'd live to see the day, Tibuka, kids. Don't suppose you've seen him around?"

A smile almost broke out on the pup's face when nothing happened to him. Still, he held it back, keeping himself steady and prepared for anything. With Mafa, you never knew what could happen, or so he had been told. So, it was best for him to just stay on his toes and be alert.
"No, Ma'am, I haven't. He's hasn't been around much since myself and my two older brothers came along. My momma won't give me a very good reason as to why, but I suspect he's got a good one himself." He continued to look at her, noticing that she had softened up, but just a little bit. He wasn't sure as to why or anything like that, but it made him feel better. Again, a smile almost broke out, but he dared not have it actually visible.
RUUUMBLLLE...
The pup's eyes got wide and he looked down at his white belly, his ears drooping a bit. He had been all excited about dinner when Mafa had shown up, no fault of her own. With the practically dead hare behind him, Erevu's nose twitched slightly, the fresh smell of blood lingering through the air. He hadn't smelt that in quite awhile, as his mother had always insisted on killing things herself and bringing it back, or just finding something that was already dead. Such a waste of good claws and blood lust.

Mafa prowled, in her characteristic way, a circle around the young pup, looking him over with an overly critical eye. Indeed, he had seemed to have inherited a good deal of his father's genetics. Who was the mother, Mafa wondered. What female let herself be guiled into breeding with Tibuka, she couldn't fathom; she supposed his bedside manner was considerably lacking. The alpha tossed her head as the boy spoke, clearing her vision from a dusty few strands of black fur that had been hanging down. She seemed to tense up a little when Erevu mentioned Tibuka not being around. Lousy father, as she expected. Somehow, all the males around here were piss poor father, except for Yakuti it seemed. It was true in her own situation; Tukutu had run off before Mabozi was even born, and Rasuli, the father of her current brood, well, he hadn't even been around when she was pregnant. Not that she expected help from these males, she could take care of herself, however, it would've been nice to have a male to dump some responsibility on.
"Two brothers... What are their names? And your mother, who is she?"
Mafa asked her questions sternly, eyes narrowing as she did. Three little Tibuka's running around. What a tragedy. However, he was a good hyena, his genetics would take them far, she hoped. At hearing the pup's stomach rumble, Mafa's eyes dashed from him to the dead hare behind him. She moved to it, grasping the ears in her mouth. She stood before him, blood dripping slowly from where she held it. Mafa's eyes widened and then quickly narrowed with intent. With holding the pup's own catch from him was her way of proving a point. Everything on these lands belonged to her, and she had the ultimate say of who deserved what. Dropping the hare to lay at rest at her front paws, Mafa licked her lips; gaze never leaving Erevu. She wasn't going to eat his catch; she was just testing him. At least, in her own malicious way.

Erevu watched Mafa prowl in a circle around him. He could feel her gaze looking over ever single point on him, seeing what he was made of and just how well he was built. He was rather stocky, for a pup. Being larger, like his father, had given him the ability to do what his brothers necessarily couldn't, such as start on hunting on his own. His mother hadn't minded, but she held back his two brothers, afraid for their safety and well being. So, since he could hunt, his body had formed rather well rounded muscles and tone, making him look bigger than he would have otherwise.
"Taka and Dushin, Ma'am." He didn't dare look at the looming alpha as she circled him. No. He had to prove himself to her, and looking at her like a worthless puppy with his tail between his legs wasn't going to get him anywhere. That was only the way of a weak hyena. "My mother is Kailasa, a new addition to the pack. She came here when she was younger and got permission from... Umm.. Some male hyena.... To stay here. She said that it was when you were away."
When he was done speaking, Mafa slid away from him, and straight to the bloody hare behind him. His ears perked up a bit as he tried to listen to what she was doing with it. The smell of the fresh blood got slightly stronger... And stronger... Until it suddenly dropped in front of his paws. Mafa had come back around to the front of him and dropped the dead hare on the ground. She then sat down behind it, staring at Erevu. He looked at the hare and then up at her, wondering what to do.
RRRRRRUUUUMMMBLLLEEEE...
He shrunk some, his stomach bothering him greatly now. It was like the dead hare was teasing him for killing it, the smell of the blood electrifying his senses. As he looked back up at Mafa, he saw her lick her chops, her dark eyes staring down at him. Looking back at the hare and then back up at the pack leader, he made up his mind, much to his dismay.
"You can have it, Ma'am. I caught it just for you, fresh and all."

Mafa mulled thougtfully over his words. She assumed as much that the three brothers would relatively look alike, and since she had their names, she could adress them. It would indeed make her seem like she was more on top of things than she actually was. That was being what being a leader was all about, making it seem flawless, and Mafa did it quite well. As for the mother, for some reason, the name rang a bell as one of their own. She had no way of knowing who'd taken her in, but if they wanted credit for the deed, she knew they'd pop up sooner or later. The part about when she was away... Well, that must've been when she was pregnant with the pups, as she had barely emerged from her den at that time.
Erevu's stomach growled louder as she taunted him with the hare right before the two. She wasn't exactly sure what he was going to do, nor was she sure of how she wanted him to react. However, when he did, she would know whether it was a good move, or a bad one. For the pup's own sake, and that of his father, she was hoping for a good one. And thankfully, he did. There was a spark in Mafa's eyes as the pup spoke, one that was easily missed, but it signaled that she was pleased with his answer. The alpha nodded, agreeing with the pups. Licking her chops once more, she picked up the limp carcass, looking like she was about to chomp down on it, but at the last second, she tossed it Erevu's way. As it landed on the dry earth with a dull thud. Mafa's eyes bored into the pup as she stared at him,
"Everything here essentially belongs to me, don't forget that. But, too, remember that loyalty, respect, and courage to your alpha will be rewarded."

The pup and the alpha merely sat there together, facing each other, the dead bloody hare between them. Erevu's stomach continued to rumble mercilessly, yelling at him to just take the damn hare. He would do no such thing though. Mafa was his superior, and to take something away from her resulted in a penalty. What was anyone's guess, but Erevu wasn't going to find out. Plus, he wanted to be loyal to her, and to show her that he could be like his father, and maybe even better. He had heard stories around the pack about Tibuka, which is why he idolized him so. Therefore, he strived to be like him, as well as hopefully better. To be on the good side of the alpha was like having every treasure in the world.
Gazing up at Mafa, Erevu waited for her move.. Her response. He was afraid that she would get angry at him. She didn't need a reason, as anything was always good enough for her. That was one of many perks a leader had. What they said went, and that was to be obeyed at all times. Erevu knew this too, which is why as hungry as he was, he passed his food on to her, loyaly and respectfully. Suddenly though, Mafa nodded her head and licked her chops. Erevu's stomach dropped as he watched her pick up the limp hare, her teeth shining with anticipation of her new meal.
Plop! The pup blinked in surprise, staring at the hare that was now in front of him once more. Mafa stood above him confidently, staring down at him with a harsh, yet understanding glare. It seemed to dig right into him and keep him there, simply looking at her and not looking away. He felt that horrible urge to smile again, but held it back, his eyes saying enough to her as they looked at her dark ones.
"Yes, Ma'am! Thank you!" He tore into the dead lump, blood gushing out and onto his muzzle, leaking into the dead earth below him. He lapped happily at it, so thankful for what she had done for him. He licked around his snout to clean it off and looked back at his leader, getting the last few drops of tasty blood off. "Would you like some? Or would you like me to catch you something?"

Inwardly, Mafa was smirking like mad at the attitude of this pup. He would grow to be quite a star member of her pack, if she had anything to say about. He did indeed seem to take after his father, well, at least when he'd been younger. However, outwardly, Mafa's expression was stoic. She showed no signs of praise or affection. The fact that she had handed that hare back over to him and that she wasn't scowling at the pup's very existance should have been enough.
The alpha surveyed the pup closely as they stood in this form of a face off, the hare now at his paws. She could tell by the look in his eyes that he was grateful. That he would never forget this. Forget her control. Or had he taken it as kindness? Either way, it was not of the matter, the exchange with this pup had gone just exactly as she had planned.
With a keen eye, she watched the young animal tear into his given meal. Erevu was a voracious young spirit, and from watching him eat she caught the sense that with some proper training, the savage in him could be brought out. He could kill lions for the sake of his pack. Of this, she had no doubt. He wouldn't want to fail her, afterall. At the pup's words, however, she shook her head firmly,
"No, Erevu, you made that kill, feel no need to share it. As you get older, remember, everyone fights for their own share around here. Nothing will simply be handed to you in life, understand? You have to work for it."
Mafa tossed her head lightly, emphasizing her point. She wasn't about to take food from a pup. The female was an adept hunter, she would go out later after this encounter. But right now, she had more serious things on hand, like fitting this pup into a 'perfect hyena' mold. So far, so good.

"Work for it? Yes, Ma'am. I understand." He harshly tore into what was left of the once whole hare, his snout getting covered in blood once more. After a few tears there and a few more here, he decided that he couldn't really pick at it anymore, or didn't want to. Any hyenas that just so happened to be prowling around could take their pick with it if they so desired. Erevu didn't care. He had taken what he wanted and tossed it aside. Simple as that.
Now though, Erevu wasn't sure of what to do. Of course, he could always clean himself up. After all, he was a rather bloody mess, and he didn't need to look or smell that way while living in this pack. So, he proceeded to clean himself. He brought his paw up to muzzle and licked it delicately, making sure to get it nice and wet. Then, he rubbed his blood-covered face and slowly washed it away, licking his paw afterwards to get those little tasty drops that had been left over.
Once he had finished, he stood up and shook himself out, looking back to make sure his coat was fluffy and clean. Normally, he wouldn't care THIS much about looking good, but he was with the alpha of his pack! The one and only! He just HAD to look his best. Plus, he wanted to impress her, and the only way to do that was to do what he knew he had to, and to him, being clean was one of them.
"Ma'am, may I ask you a question about myself, if I may?", he questioned politely, making sure to address her in the best way he possibly could.

Mafa tilted her head up just slightly, breathing out slowly. It was an arrogant gesture, hovering above the pup as he was immersed in his food. She felt like she had control. Mafa'd missed that feeling. It had been quite a while. Her eyes followed the massacred remains of the hare as Erevu tossed them aside. Slowly, her eyes trailed back to the pup, catching sight of his preening and cleaning. The female couldn't help but chortle. Where did he think he was? Some classy pack where appearences mattered? That certainly wasn't her pack.
"If it's the blood of your enemy, Erevu, you leave it be. Let the blood dry on your fur, like a medal of your victory."
Mafa's tone was gruff and proud. She had fought and taken down many a lion, and wearing the beast's blood had always come as quite a reward for her. It showed others that one wasn't weak, that one could stand up for themselves. Mafa wanted the youngster to know that. To engrain it in his head. Stoically, she gazed at Erevu,
"Yes, go ahead then."

"The blood of your enemy...", he repeated to himself, looking up at Mafa with all due respect. She had been through many battles and fights, so she knew EXACTLY what she was talking about. To wear the blood of the one whom you had won against.. That was the way of a true hyena, or that's how Erevu saw it. He now felt like rubbing his face all over the bloody ground now, but refrained from doing so, possibly making himself look desperate or like a complete fool.
Now however, now was his chance to talk to Mafa. He actually had a few things that were bothering his rather feeble mind, but he would start with what he figured Mafa would be able to answer best.
"What will become of me, Ma'am? Will I be able to become great like my father was, and serve under your authority? Do you think I have what it takes to become a killer hyena?"
