Howdy everyone Ax with a question or multiple I guess so lets get started!

Okay so i was thinking of installing server distro of Linux on one of my comps, I can install if fine and what not, just, KDE or GNOME doesn't seem be default, so anyway I can get it to run In GUI mode instead of Command line, its scary in there...

Or I would like to install the newest version Of Ubuntu on it, but every time I click install and make my way threw preferences, the install stops at 23% I've tried it about 4 times, so should I just burn another disk?

um, I think that is all for now, unless I find something else while playing with it.

to start the GUI from the command-line type:
$ startx

or to have it start in GUI mode by default edit /etc/inittab and change the initdefault to 4

For example, change this:
id:2:initdefault:

to this:
id:4:initdefault:

In most cases 4 is unused and 5 is GUI

Define "most". In Slackware, Knoppix, and I believe Gentoo, GUI is 4.

Of course, it could vary by distribution and you can easily change the mapping by editing the /etc/inittab file. I will check specifically what Ubuntu uses later.

SUSE uses 5
LinuxProMagazine refers to 5 as being a GUI
http://www.linux.com/articles/114107
Gentoo:
* 0 - Halt
* 1 - Single
* 2 - Multi-user, no network
* 3 - Full multi-user with display manager
* 4 - Full multi-user with display manager (Alias for runlevel 3)
* 5 - Full multi-user with display manager (Alias for runlevel 3)
* 6 - Reboot
Debian:
* 0 - Halt
* 1 - Single
* 2 through to 5 - Full multi-user with console logins and display manager if installed
* 6 - Reboot
Red Hat/Fedora:
* 0 - Halt
* 1 - Single user
* 2 - Not used/User definable
* 3 - Full multi-user, console logins only
* 4 - Not used/User definable
* 5 - Full multi-user, with display manager as well as console logins
* 6 - Reboot

Ubuntu now uses upstart which, from my understanding is based off of init but differs
