(( Author's note: each time I use the female pronoun here- not out of disrespect, mind you, but because Fox really is a girl, Fox in my mind is stabbing me in my mind with her laser-edged sword. It really hurts, so you might want to avoid calling Fox by 'her' or 'she' if you can. ))

User ImageName: Fox

Age: 15 or 16

Occupation: Apprentice aboard the Good Ship Misfortune

Physical Appearance: Fox is lithe and pretty, which she really dislikes. The picture at left is a pretty good representation, mostly. She keeps her long, blonde hair tied back, but refuses cut it until about two thirds of the way into the story, at which point, her hair is black. Fox is a transvestite, doing her very best not to look like a girl, including the whole boob-binding bit. Which brings us to the only part of her anatomy that isn't impossibly unsuited to her- with her lithe and willowy figure comes a lack of bust. So, if you didn't know Fox, you might mistake her for a really, really girly guy. Except not so much.

Background: Fox grew up in a society that... really had a stick up its a**. Her family was rich, and tended to ignore her except to show her off. No, Fox doesn't angst about that. She kinda blows them off. Fox was always a bit of a tomboy, and really, really loved pirates. Now, here goes the really odd, kinda coincidental bit; because of the INSANELY strict gender roles of her society, she only ever heard about guy pirates, so when she hears her dad talking about actual pirates, she dresses up as a guy so that she can be a pirate, but also as an almost unconscious (oh, who am I kidding, it's totally unconscious) rejection of said gender roles. This... fails miserably, but she still ends up as an apprentice on the Good Ship Misfortune.

Psycho-babble and Development over Story: See, the great thing about Fox is that she isn't really transgendered, but she doesn't know it, and is therefore reluctant to claim any sort of gender identity. This makes her edgy and a bit more hesitant than she should be for the greater part of the story. Also a b***h about pronouns, but that's one thing that doesn't change. Despite everything, Fox is really more honest than people expect of a ruthless pirate, but it's mostly a personal honesty, which is what causes the above screwed up-ness. She isn't particularly an expert at anything, including creativity or innovation, but she's humble enough to listen to others, which... in all honesty, is probably what Blythe sees in her that causes him to name her as his successor.

Tortures (just for fun): Being pretty, living in a shitty society, dealing with Caspar Williams, who wants to take her back to aforementioned shitty society, not being able to keep Blythe from dying when the ship is blown up by Caspar Williams, getting possessed by vampire ghosts and almost killing the one person who really does care about her, killing Caspar Williams, who she does in fact feel some attraction towards.

Fox doesn't want to look like a girl, and yet keeps his/her hair long? I don't quite see the logical connection in that.

I'm also kind of confused as to the gender thing going on. I mean, I like screwy gender roles, but I'm having trouble getting exactly what Fox is (because you're insistent on using male pronouns).

I personally don't care, but I have to deal with Fox, who does. Fox would probably absolutely maim anyone who used a male pronoun, though. Either that or go whine about it to no one in particular. It's like the hair- it's a confidence thing. Fox wants to reject the roles she was assigned, but doesn't really see another viable option, and therefore sets sail on the Seas of Insecure Ambiguity.

Hmmm... Fox is... kinda neither, but more female than anything. I mean, on a scale from 1 to 10, if 1 is male and 10 is female, Fox would score... maybe 6 or 7. For comparison, I would rate myself 10 even though I'm a bit of a tomboy... sorta... maybe... and Captain Blythe a 2 even though he wears a skirt.

Because obviously if you accidentally refer to Fox as something unsavory in your head, she will take control of your body and make you shank yourself repeatedly. Poor you having to deal with Fox.

Why is her name Fox? Is that short for something, or a nickname? if so, why does she have it, and what is her real name? And if that is her real name, how the hell did she end up with it? And if her society's gender roles are so strict, why would it occur to her to dress as a guy? And... what's a vampire ghost? o.o

I defense of Fox's whole dress like a guy thing... It happened in strict societies in real life. Females joined the military disguised as men plenty of times over the ages. Now, how successful they were at that depended on the person...

But the rest I will admit to being a bit puzzled by.

I didn't mean that as a "how dare you have her dress as a man, that is nonsense and I demand you change it once" sort of thing; more of a "what motivated her" sort of thing.

What motivated her was that, due to the patriarchal society, she thought only guys could be pirates, and she wanted to be a pirate. After that? The whole gender roles thing. Fox was running away from the meek, demure, etc. identity that had been assigned to her, and since that was so closely tied to what it meant to be female, she ran away from that, too.

As for the vampire ghosts... well... every pirate story has got to have ghosts somewhere, and as for the vampire bit... no idea. They kinda make Fox one of them (they're... a bit like psychic vampires) and Fox gets black hair and... is a bit odd after that. Not insane, exactly, but in that general direction.

Are your psychic vampires harmed by sunlight, pale-skinned, pointy-eared, and/or have long canines? Because if they are, you might be confusing them with the regular blood-drinking ones. However, that does lead me to the next question. What weaknesses will your psychic vampires have?

They're psychic vampire ghosts, they don't look (or act) anything like traditional vampires. They're kinda invisible and shapeless, and they just float around and make anyone who happens to stumble upon them (into their plane of reality, more like) into something like themselves. Kinda. And their weakness? Uh... identity, or friendship or some crap like that. Seriously. Fox gets (mostly) saved when Robin shows up and all he has to do is demonstrate that he's willing to die for his captain (Fox). And I don't think they ever get rid of them, just become more or less immune. I don't know if you can get rid of the buggers.
