Hello everyone, and welcome to the segment on Vietnamese dialects! In Vietnamese dialects, there are three main dialects I can think of: the Northern dialect, the Middle dialect, and the Southern dialect. From those three, the dialects break down into more classifications, but we will stay in these parameters for now.
In the Vietnamese alphabet, there are twelve vowels and seventeen consonants. Here they are:
Vowels:
Aa Ăă Ââ Ee Êê Ii Oo Ôô Ơơ Uu Ưư Yy
Note: The letter "Y" is always a vowel in Vietnamese.
Consonants:
Bb Cc Dd Đđ Gg Hh Kk Ll Mm Nn Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Vv Xx
In the north, the letter "D" is pronounced like the English "Y". However, in the south, the letter "D" is pronounced like the English "Z".
In the north, the letter "R" is pronounced like the Spanish "R". However, in the south, the letter "R" is pronounced like the English "D".
The Vietnamese "Đ" is pronounced as "D" in both the north and south.
When "G" comes before "I" in Vietnamese, the "G" is pronounced as an English "Z" in the north. In the south, it is pronounced as the English "Y".
The difference mainly between the three areas is pronounciation of the tones and different vernacular vocabularies, as all other dialects are differentiated.
More to come soon!

Lawrencew If Y is always a consonant, then why is it grouped with the vowels? eek Oops! I made this thread so long ago, I abandoned it, without editing the wrong parts out.
My bad. Y is always a vowel, and is always pronounced as I. The only difference is its duration in the word. surprised
