I'm wondering if anyone sets up menus for special nights, or just to have dinner? I personally don't..but I would love to hear any ideas for what you put on your menus. 3nodding You could post the menu here, or do whatever.

I do like "themed" dinners, if that is what you mean. Personally, I think a Japanese dinner is amazing.
I start with Gyoza Miso Soup 3 delights donburi (Chicken, tamago, daikon) Azuki ice cream/ sorbet

I menu plan constantly. My father's birthday dinner was: Authentic Caesar Salad Sauteed Duck Breast with a Port Wine Reduction and Asparagus with Toasted Hazelnut Vinaigrette Strawberry Shortcake with Honey-Cornmeal Biscuits
He is a man of simple tastes, so I kept that one kind of simple, but if anyone's interested, I can post others...

I normally decide a dinner menu depending on the theme of that night. the simpler the better specially if you are with your family so that you can also enjoy the dinner you are preparing.
American menu:
appetizer: buffalo wings with blue cheese dressing and mozzarella croquet. a salad will be a healthy option.
Soup: clam chowder siding: mac and cheese gratin with bacon and roasted corn on cob with butter
Main course: baby back ribs or prime stake (angus or wagyu) with roasted garlic mashed potatoes or a savory crepe of your choice would be great. served with your favorite red wine.
dessert: apple pie with vanilla ice cream or a cheese cake of your choice. biggrin

For normal weekday meals, I look in the cabinet and fridge, see what I've got, and then whip up whatever looks appealing.
For Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch, and Saturday dinner, I have maybe 20 main dishes that I cycle through, depending on season, mood, and what's on sale that week at the grocery store. Sabbaths are a big deal, but I try not to go too outrageous, because after cooking, I still have to get clean and pretty, and I like approaching the Sabbath with a smile and a calm demeanor instead of rushing around and winding up tired and cranky.
For holidays, though, I do tend to go all-out. Especially for Passover, which is of course the most complicated holiday in terms of food, I tend to plan that within an inch of its life every year. I make a menu, shop for the non-perishable items up to a month in advance, and then buy the perishables as the holiday approaches. Every year is different, though I try to keep one dish from the previous year and one dish from some other year that folks liked. I've even been known to email friends my menu to entice them to come eat by me so we can all be together on the holiday.
