rap is music but it depends on the artist. Some artist just don't take it seriously. While rappers like 2pac and Biggie and Eminem put their lives and hearts and souls into it.

I think that if you wan't to hear rap that comes from dedicatin, and love for the music, you need to look at the artists that have been forgotten long ago, the list includes artists like:
Public enemy, grandmaster flash and the furious five, boogie down productions, the beastie boys, EPMD, run dmc, eric b. and rakim, doug e. fresh & the get fresh crew, kool moe dee, de la soul, stetsasonic, afrika bambaataa,m.c. busy bee, kurtis blow, m.c. lyte, treacherous three, big daddy kane, biz markie, the fat boys, l.l. cool j,....
and yes even d.j. jazzy and the fresh prince once made music from the heart.

when "gangsta" rap came along and revolutionised the music, it also unfortunately changed the way rap was viewed, it no longer was about "kickin' the rhymes" for the people, it became about selling records and showing your money off to the homies, very few post "gangsta" era (1988-1996) artists have the heart it would have taken to become a major player in the rap game back in the 80's when rap was considered to be just a "fad", and artists had to sell their records themselves, not have their records pushed out by the media machine looking for the next big thing.

I lost intrest in rap artists when they combined R&B and rap, and replaced the scratching with singing, ever scense then most all rap has sounded the same to me.

I know, the only scratching I hear is at the clubs and party only now.

The most common place to find scratching nowadays is in rock music. Imagine that!

I like the X-ecutioners and Linkin Park. They're good.

Yuh, Linkin' Park is good, sad that rap got so warped that Linkin' Park is called pure rap now.

I second that. And I think Ludacris should be added to that list, since from what I've been led to understand, he worked his own way up. That's dedication.

Great stuff!!! What was before gangsta was indeed great stuff. I am a big fan of Eric B. and Rakim, Black Sheep, EPMD, Fushnikins... stuff that was fun, it was more than just blabbing about sex and violence. There are a few these days that are coming to realize that the old-school was the correct school, in that they are starting to actually rap about things that matter, things like current events that need fixing, not just about drive bys and bitches. Though I doubt things will ever be like the wonderful days of old-school.

heart razz I'm a softie, I don't really mind most modern day 'rap' but I'm told it has been better in the past. I'm also told comparing this stuff to the past makes this stuff look like crap. razz heart
