Bread is Thicker Than Blood

It is the reign of King William, before the battle of the roses and before the reign of King Henry VII; England in its time of pure, untainted, natural beauty. Fields and meadows glitter in the golden, summer sunlight like sharply cut emeralds covered in the morning’s diamond dew. Pools of liquid sunshine lay at the bottom of oak trees within woodlands, regularly getting sapped at yet never seeming to drain. Although the King ruled all of England, his castle walls surrounded only one village. As usual, the village was bustling with life; drunkards in the taverns hitting on the unmarried bar wenches, children playing in the streets, merchants trying to dish out the best bargains in a secret competition with each other. Higher up in the chain, things were allot duller but were about to get more interesting. As in most tales, for the king to be a true king, he is promised a maiden. Usually we hear of the living ‘happily ever after’. This isn’t always true.

The maiden in this tale, is not the cliché one we always hear of in traditional stories, as this is by no means, a traditional story. Jane, the main focus of this story, is strong spirited and stubborn, much like her hair, which is all straight and sleek apart from those defiant ends which kink outwards. Her feminine eyes, which were a beautiful Azure colour yet a hazelnut brown around the outer edge of the irises, were always pearly and shiny. Dark eyelashes framed the ocean blue orbs, and the length made them appear to be able to tickle the outer rims of her eye sockets. Make no mistake; although beautiful, they could certainly give out a rather deadly glare. The skin of her face and visible body was the colour of a peach, possibly paler yet on her cheeks, there was a slightly rosy tint to them. All the words giving an idea of soft could not compare to her skin: silky, smooth, baby soft, tender. From a distance, her complexion gave her such a look it would seem as if she was glowing, like a porcelain doll in the light as they were sat up on a high shelf. Everyone who is human has imperfections, and Jane's was on her neck. Where her jugular lay in her tender neck, above the skin, was a 'beauty spot' which was something she could not get rid of, no matter how much she tried to hide it. To sum it up, she was the type of girl to be put up on a pedastool and admired by the poets of the land.

Her beauty was what got her into this mess. The King; a broadly built man, quite allot older than her with raven black hair and piercing, ivy green eyes took rather a shine to the girl's appearance. As he was looking for someone to fill the throne at his side, he approached Jane's father, and asked him for her hand. Being a greedy, money guzzling land owner, Jane's father immediately said yes in the prospect of getting allot more riches than he was at the moment from the fat of his land. Upon hearing the news, the wildly independent, untamed beauty named Jane, was beside herself. As it was her father who had gotten her into the mess, her mother had died long ago and her brother was always within the castle Jail, working, she had nobody to turn to. Being a devout Catholic, she turned to her true love: God. The night of receiving the news, she asked God "What should I do?"
"You will do what your heart tells you to do my child," a voice said in her head, God had heard her pleas and decided to answer "as long as you are happy, then as am I."
This really didn't answer her question, she needed to know what exactly to do. Before going to bed shortly after praying, she planned what to do; play along for now, but at the first opportune moment, kill the King. It would make her happy, and wasn't that what God wanted? Jane loathed the King, had done from being a small child, the way he ran things was rather cruel in her opinion. That train of thought is what landed her in the dark, dank cell in which she resides. She tried and failed to kill her 'husband'.

Callum, her older brother, was the guard of her cell. Unlike Jane, he had whispy, jet black hair which could touch his shoulders and ivy green eyes. With being a guard, obviously he had to be quite built, also, the armour he wore was quite heavy so he had to be fit enough to be able to fight in it, let alone stand in it. He was the one assigned to guard his sister. He was the one pleading her to apologise. The King had given her a choice; apologise publicly or be put to the gallows. Jane, being the stubborn, wild beauty she was, chose the gallows. In a way, she chose her love of God and his will over her brother and his want.
"Please Jane," Callum begged, it took a lot of strength and dignity for him not to get on his knees and start crying, which was what he really wanted to do "please, just apologise and we can go home. You don't have to stay with him. You have no obligation to him!"

"That, my dear brother, is where you are wrong," she said with her eyes closed, sat on the bench in her cell "I am afraid that I know already what will happen if I apologise. He will force me to stay with him, force me to create his heirs. I would rather be with the Father in heaven, free and happy, than with that pompous oaf and trapped." Callum couldn't believe what he was hearing. He was out of reasons for her to apologise to the King, and out of time by the looks of it. Two guards came for his sister, and he looked at the King's lap dogs with an evil glare. Jane was lead to the gallows to be hung within the hour, in London town centre. There was a hushed, eerie silence over the crowds. When asked of her decision, she replied "I choose to be with my Father in heaven, as he is the one I love, not that pompous oaf you call a 'King'. He is no King, just a sad shadow of a man." The redhead was going to die anyway, so she had no reason not to say what she liked. Hopefully, those in the crowd would take heed of her freedom, and rebel against the King in her name. As she was hung, and the last gasps of life escaped her weak, limp body, she did something. With that last breath, she damned the King and prayed that God would look down on her beloved brother and protect him.

Background

I had to write a short story no longer than 1000 words, which I found really difficult. I had to base it on a form of love, so I centred it on a strange form of love: religious faith. I, myself, have no faith, but I thought it would be interesting to portray it.

This is simply amazing. I'm not terribly good with descriptive imagery, and I was able to perfectly visualize what I read. Finished or not, this is a piece of work. A+. 4laugh

Thank you! ^^
Yes, over the holidays I will be filling in the blanks in my spare time.
It was only short because it was school work.
