*pokes at the quiet forum*
Hi.
3nodding I noticed there's not too much talk about yuri series, so I thought I'd rec my favourite author of the genre.
Yamaji Ebine did two series I really adore,
Free Soul and
Indigo Blue. Both are scanslated, and I've linked the titles to their respective pages at
Lililicious' scanslation website. If you browse through their projects, there's a lot of other really great yuri series that they've translated, and I think some of the short stories from the Yuri Shimai anthologies are especially sweet.
heart They also scanslate doujinshi for series like
Sailor Moon, and they've subtitled my favourite shoujo ai series,
Maria-sama ga Miteru. But now I'm getting sidetracked pimping out the group, so let's get back to the two series I wanted to talk about.
sweatdrop Both of these have parts where it gets graphic! There is depiction of sex, and naked bodies. It's not exactly a driving force in the stories, but it is there and it is important for reasons not related to cheap thrills, so I don't consider it porn.
If you're not interested so much in story, Maka Maka is probably more down your alley--INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL, but unabashedly about 75% gratuitous smut. Hopefully I'm not breaking the 'no porn' rule here, but sexuality... well, it usually deals with sex, and I'm sure you're all mature enough to handle that. Anyways, I assume that any forum that mentions Sensitive Pornograph won't have any problems with this.
whee Free Soul is a lovely little story about a young lesbian who wants to become a manga artist. She's created this character for her manga, an independent, smart, young African American woman, and she expresses a lot of her thoughts and views and dreams through the character. She also uses the manga to kind of help her work through her problems in real life and love, and as her experiences change her she gets ideas and solidifies what the wants to do with the plot of the manga. She falls in love with a wild, carefree musician who doesn't want to commit to anyone or anything, and is sort of adopted into the household of an elderly artist and her handsome young caretaker/assistant. The manga is basically about how she deals with being a lesbian and problems that are raised by coming out, and how she deals with love and life in general. The cast is a bit eccentric, but I'm sure most people who lead alternative lifestyles can relate to that.
wink Indigo Blue is more about a woman exploring her sexuality, and coming to terms with the fact that she's more interested in women than she is in men. The protagonist is a writer, and she starts of in a relationship with her male editor, but things get more complex as she finds herself falling for a woman who interprets one of her short stories to be about two women having sex instead of a man and a woman. It's a manga about taking those first steps towards breaking boundaries, and learning to accept who you are.
Yamaji Ebine also wrote a work titled
Love My Life that I haven't read, but there is a live-action movie version of it that I have seen, and I really enjoyed the movie. It's Japanese, of course, but it's been subbed. I still have the subtitle file on my computer, but sadly the video was corrupted somehow when I did a backup and wiped my system, and I haven't been able to find it again since then.
cry I guess that's it...?
sweatdrop If you've read anything by Yamaji Ebine before, or if you decide to give her a shot because of this post, let me know what you think?
