Kays. Mainly because I love this series and I really want to talk about it with people other than my friends, I'm posting this. (And because I just can't wait for the manga subforum anymore.)

So. Death Note. Any fans? I would expect so. Lots and lots of people on the internet are into Death Note. Lot of people on deviantART and Gaia, I'm assuming. My avatar is meant to look similar to Near's, so I'm a huge fan. Anyone else?

I have a confession to make: I've never read any Death Note! eek
I watched the anime, and really enjoyed it. I'm hoping to find the manga cheap at an anime convention (I can always dream, right?) I've heard it's much better than the anime.

The manga's not that expensive... $8-$10 per volume? Or you could just borrow it from a library or from a friend. Either that or go to Barnes & Noble and read it all there XDD

But I've only seen a couple of episodes of the anime (Japanese subs, too), so I wouldn't know if the manga is better. However, I do have friends who've read the entire series and watch the English dubs and they absolutely ROFL at how terrible it is. Especially Watari's voice XDD

I actually got the manga off discountanimedvd.com for $5.99 each. o___O That website makes me spend buy excessive amounts of manga because I feel like I'm saving money. Goodbye, college spending money!

But anyway, I'm kinda a crazy Death Note fan. I go around with an L pin on my sweatshirt all the time... Great series, probably my favorite shounen manga ever.

Hahaha, nice.

I love it! My friends and I are complete DN-tards. I went to an anime convention last week and my friend got me a poster of Ryuk and Raito and I bought this adorable L keychain from a person on dA. And my friend also got How to Read 13 on Saturday, even though it was supposed to come out on Tuesday LOL.

But, yeah. It's awesome : D

Death Note's pretty cool. It makes you think in ways that are....different. Like when Light hides the notebook in his desk. O_O GIENUS!!! well at least I thought so...

$12 a volume, and that's a LOT of money for something that gets read so quickly.

So, yes. Death Note needs to wait until I'm rich or I find it really cheap somewhere! smile

Oh, yeah. It's such an intricate and complex manga... And I'm borrowing How to Read 13 right now and it's so fun reading about the creator's thoughts on subjects such as the characters, the plot, the shinigami, and a whole bunch of other things!

$12? o.o
Why so expensive? D:

Which store was it $12 for? Because Borders sells their books pretty fairly...

I've never seen Death Note for more than $10 before... Though I've bought other manga for $14-15 before, which sucks.

How to Read 13 costs more than the other ones, I think. I really need to get it though. I've had the Japanese version for a while, but I can only read about 10% of that...

But yeah, I've heard there's also going to be novels to go with the manga, and an L movie (Not a just DN movie. An L movie.)
PostPosted: Wed Feb 27, 2008 6:11 pm

Yeah, How to Read is $15. It's because it's thicker, it has L's "true name" (Psh. Anyone with fingers, a brain, and internet access already knew what it was prior to the release of the book <.<), and it's a lot of content.

The L novel (Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases) came out the same day that How to Read 13 came out, which was February 19, Tuesday. Yes, I had that date implanted on my brain ever since I found out, lol razz

And L Change the World premiered in Japan already, I think...

Heheh. I already knew it by stumbling across it by accident. But yeah, I really need to get that book. I've kinda been waiting until I can order a whole boxful of manga though (It's for the free shipping! Really...).

Do you know if the novel is any good? The only other time I got the novel of a manga, well... it was hilariously mediocre.

It's already out in Japan?! That means... I'll probably end up watching it illegally. *cough*

I'm actually borrowing the novel right now. (I returned my friend's How to Read in exchange for the novel, lul). So far, it's... interesting. Mello is the narrator, although the main characters are L and Naomi Misora. The style of the writing is quite unique, but... Hm. Like, today I was reading my friend's copy of How to Read and she said "Wow, you like that more then the novel, don't you?" and I answered with "Well, it has more information about Death Note. The novel is only a spin-off."

Note that I said "spin-off" instead of "prequel" which a lot of people consider the L novel. I called it a spin-off because that's what it really is to me. There isn't really anything about THE Death Note. It's just about a series of murder cases that L and Misora were working on together. The murders weren't even brought about by the Death Note. The book just shows insight on how L works and Wammy's House.

Heheheh, I just got How to Read from someone as a present and have just skimmed through it so far, but still... heart

I don't know... I agree about it being a spin-off pretty much, since it's not exactly related (it's not even written by the same person, is it?), and the manga came first and all... but yeah, it sounds like it might be worth reading anyway. Because, you know... L. sweatdrop And I suppose it's background info about the characters and stuff... and I always kinda wanted to know more about where in the world these Wammy House people came from...
PostPosted: Tue Mar 18, 2008 2:40 pm

Nope, it's not written by the same person. I Believe its author is NIOSIN. Or something like that. I probably got it wrong, haha.

As for the children from Wammy's House, they're really a group of talented/gifted orphans. I have a Near fanfiction on a looong hiatus, and I plan to reveal my views on how Wammy's House works there, but it's been months since I last worked on it, so... :/

I haven't read the manga, but the Anime series with English subs was a pretty kick-a** show. I'd have to say that favorite character is a toss up between L and Light. L was soo brilliant and he had the amazing little quirks like balling himself up in his chair and eating ridiculous amounts of sweets. But Light eventually got him, his brilliance won out. He's just so damned arrogant that I can't say I like him more than L. However, I still had a bit of hope at the end that things would turn out differently for him. He couldn't have won outright of course. I don't know I guess it revealed to much of his true character and how weak and spineless he really was.
