First of all, I don't mean cheesy music that you secretly listen to. I don't like telling people what music I like because it's different than what everyone I know likes. Normally I'll just tell people I like rock music and then get asked awkward questions about bands like Fall Out Boy and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, which is what people associate with 'rock music'. As I'm in high school, people tend to be ignorant and expect everyone to like the same stuff. I actually like bands like Nightwish (with Tarja), Sonata Arctica, Theatre of Tragedy (with Liv) and Leaves' Eyes. No one I know has heard of them. And they'd probably laugh if they heard their songs because they often have unusual elements to their songs (Nightwish had Tarja who's a classical singer, Theatre of Tragedy had the old English lyrics..) and the lead singers don't sound like everyone else and don't scream. I don't want to be a poser and start listening to what's popular. I'm not purposely avoiding popular music either, I just don't like it. So I'm wondering if it makes me totally insane to not like talking about the music that I like?

I don't think you're wierd at all for hiding your music taste, I am the same way. I hate that look you get when you actually tell people what you listen to, or you get those people who try and pretend they know what you're talking about...haha. I haven't heard of that music before though, I am going to check them out. They sound very interesting.

I think its okay to not want to talk about your music prefrences. Most of the time I too only say rock, and forms of rock. When people ask bands and I say something like Dashboard Confessionals, its alittle sad they call me gay just because I like them but I shrug it off, thats their opinion, so yeah its ok to not want to talk about it but in some cases I think music discribes who you are to an extent.

She asked what I listened to so I gave her a link to a Sonata Arctica song on youtube. Which she just said was 'scary'. It's not. Well, not compared to all this screamo stuff. None of them pretend they know who I'm on about because they genuinely haven't got a clue and haven't even heard the names of my favourite bands before. It's cool that you think they sound interesting though. If you haven't looked for their songs yet, I'll add some links to my first post.

I can talk about certain musical groups in front of my friends. Like Queen and Led Zeppelin. I mention The Who, and unless I mention the CSI theme song, they have no idea who they are.
But... I can't talk about liking Michael Jackson's music in front of anybody, because they'll go on about anything but his music, when that's all they should really care about.
BTW. I also can't talk about liking people like Abba or the Bee Gees, I get laughed out of the room.

I know how it feels to be ridiculed for the music you like. I write music and a lot of people who hear my music think it is very off the wall. I checked out the bands listed above and they are really amazing! They all have different sounds to them, a lot of the musical talent today all sound the same. I really enjoyed Leaves' Eyes and Nightwish. Sonata Arctic was really fantastic as well...hmmm...I suppose I just really enjoyed all of them..haha. Theatre of Tragedy is really unique and I think I liked them most. I have NEVER heard a sound like that before, and the old english lyrics just add to it; really brilliant artists! I love in Sonata Arctic the guy plays a keytar, you never ever see anyone play those anymore; they were mainly an 80's industrial instrument...glad to see it come back...haha. Thanks so much for the recommendations, I have added them to my playlists and will enjoy listening to them. Have anymore bands you'd like to share?

"You can please some people all the time, and all people some of the time, but you can never please all people all the time" Remember that, when you share your musical tastes with another. I would blare my utterly happy J-pop as soon as I would a rap tune or country song. People have their preferences, and one may not be like the other

I don't think you should be embarrassed. It's kind of cool that you have an unusual taste in music. So long as you're not in love with My Chemical Romance or Mika, there's no reason to be embarrassed. 3nodding

"Lyke, OMFG, he's soooo gay!"
It's called being camp. You listen to Tiesto. No amount of trashing my music will ever forgive you of that. ... is the thing that makes you blind

BassFu No, it's not normal at all. Stop listening to embarrassing music immediately. lawl!!1 ur em0 n ur naym is stoop1d!!!!11!one! in any case. Beyond me and Bassfu's sense of humor(or otherwise), what does it matter? What does it matter in the end. Oh no, they don't like listening to my music? Maybe they will die horribly because they had to listen to something that they weren't used to. What ever will they do to remedy the pain of three minutes worth of music? If its bad enough, who knows. probably shoot themselves if your(or they) lucky.

i just look at it like this, you have to accept others may not like your music, i know a lot of people don't like mine, but ******** em, it's not their ears being put to use so regularly with my music. But i don't think people should take it personal when someone doesn't like their music, for instance my chemical romance is pretty popular, i effing hate them, a nd the whole genre pretty much, and pretty much any screamy whiny crap or ima call this punk music to sell to the zombies crap I just hate it all. my motto is this, the music has to be original, catch my attention, or it can go to hell. I know people havce different tastes and that's fine, the only time a music listener really bugs me is whenthey listen to stuff that all sounds the same, don't even play an instrument or know the first thing about note arrangement, and they're gonna say they know it all. I hate those people. but i mean, there will always be people that don't like your music and vice versa,
