Since you know the Daleks and Timelords, it might not be a bad one. I don't know what a really good first one would be for classic Who. Know at the beginning (it's part of the beginning anyway continuing from the previous season, this being the season opener) that his companion is Romana, a fellow Timelord.

It's really, really not. The thing'll put you off for life.
There's a few cute bits where Douglas Adams has managed to polish the script, and Tom and Lalla are always a cute double act...but other than that, this is horrible, horrible television. Terry Nation recycling all his old cliches, the Daleks at thier least menacing ever, endless padded tedium to fill out the episode count, not the faintest glimmer of sense behind the plot and only the comedy disco robots to break the visual monotony of the quarry/corridor combo.
This isn't just so bad it will put you off seeking out any more of the Old Series, this is so bad that it will sour and taint much of what you do eventually see of it.

This one makes the error of laughing at the Daleks. You just can't do that if you want them to be monsters. The Doctor makes a smart-alecky remark at one and laughs at it as he escapes--and if the Doctor himself doesn't take them seriously, why should we? neutral It's the sort of episode I'd watch specifically to sit there taunting it for laughs, like a friend & I do when we watch The Twin Dilemma. mrgreen

I like "The City of Death". It's also a Douglas Adams story, has humor & satire in it, & some sly observations on What Is Art. And it was filmed in Paris.
Fifth Doctor--I like Castrovalva, Kinda, Black Orchid, Snakedance (companion to Kinda), Warriors of the Deep (yes, I know it has flaws, the horrible rubber Myrka especially, but it's an early example of the Doctor shoved into a no-win situation where he comes out of it by the skin of his teeth), Frontios, & Caves of Androzani (probably the very best--but also 5's very last!).

Hmmm sounds good, I do like Douglas Adams, I got so annoyed in english recently because they made us watch the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy movie, I was just sitting there complaining about how much better the book and television series were I like Castrovalva, Ive seen it a few times, I think I might get that one. Thanks for the Help, I really need it to futher my Doctor Who obbsession

Having just rewatched Destiny of the Daleks on the R1 DVD, I would say that this is a decent story, marred by poor production values. There's a scene where Davros wobbles around in his funky Dalek wheelchair which is embarrassingly bad, and also a scene where a Dalek's upper half briefly lifts up which should have been edited out. Plus the Movellans, a race that we're supposed to believe are a military match for the Daleks, look like they stepped out of a disco or something.
I also didn't like that Terry Nation seems to treat the Daleks like they're actually robots in this story.
Still, it's not a terrible story. Some people don't like how Davros is portrayed, but I actually like that he's a bit more subdued than in, say, Remembrance of the Daleks.

C'mon, the Colin Baker era wasn't that bad. Okay, so "The Twin Dilemma" was fairly shoddy, but there were others of his I liked. "Revelation of the Daleks", "Vengeance on Varos", "The Trial of a Timelord" and even the much derided "Timelash" (please don't kill me) are all great, underrated television.
If you're looking for a good Dalek story, I'd choose "Genesis of the Daleks" over "Destiny". Ok, it costs more, and, having come out a while ago, would be harder to find; but it's classic Who at its best. "Destiny" had some great humour, but was overall rather weak. Not terrible, but not good either.
I'd also recommend (most of) the episodes written by Robert Holmes. Stories like "The Talons of Weng Chiang" and "The Caves of Androzani" (yes, I do use those two examples rather a lot) are both top-notch adventures; if you want to collect Fourth and Fifth Doctor stories, I wouldn't look past them.
