She was born in the UK in July 1975, but moved to Osaka, Japan, when she was two. Her parents are most likely Japanese, though it is never explicitly stated. (They could be Koreans who lived in Japan for most of their lives. You never know.)
She was seen first in Doctor Who in the episode "Aliens of London", where she was called to examine an alien corpse at a hospital. She and Captain Jack Harkness are the only known characters in Torchwood 3 that have met the Doctor.
In Torchwood, she acts as the technical expert, working with mathematics and technology, both alien and human. She is hinted to have a crush on Owen (admitting her love in the episode "Dead Man Walking"). In the episode "Greeks Bearing Gifts", she has a sexual relationship with a most likely female alien who called herself Mary, though Mary was sent to the Sun and presumably died. Her next blatant relationship was with Tommy in "To The Last Man", though she knows that he dies in a war after he is sent back in time.
