So I've been thinking about reading "The Plague Dogs" which is another book by Richard Adams. I just haven't been to sure about it because it seems a lot more horrific than Watership Down.
My theory was proved right. I've been watching the old movie from '82 to see if I like it enough to read the book, and I just watched a scene that scared the bejeepers out of me. SPOILERS (highlight): Some of the men go looking for the dogs and when one of them is out on his own, he spots one of them and whistles for it to come. When the dog finally gets up to him, he taps at his lap for the dog to climb up since it's a small one. Unfortunately, he was stupid enough to leave his gun next to him and when the dog climbed up, its hind paw snapped the trigger and the gun shot the man's face off, killing him. I don't know about you guys, but something like that wouldn't be any better to read. Especially since Adams' tends to get more detailed in the writings.

Holy crap, that sounds horrible. And yet... I want to see this movie now. >.> Is it on youtube?
I haven't read the book, and only upon joining this guild did I even know it existed. I think I'm reluctant to read it simply because I feel like it would disappoint me. I could be wrong. Even so, it'll be awhile yet before I pick it up. I'm also experiencing some of my old 'pre-Watership Down mentality.' "Who wants to read about a couple o' dogs?" xd

I agree - I'm stuck on Watership Down, and it's hard to move from one species to another.
From what I've read on review boards, the uncut version is on YouTube. I wouldn't want to watch it though - the cut one is graphic enough. I'm watching the cut one on SurftheChannel.com

I'm watching the uncut one on youtube. So far nothing graphic [I've only just started part 3] but its pretty disturbing.
I'm also finding out through comments users have left that... the voice actors for Snitter and Rowf are the same guys who did Hazel/Fiver and Bigwig. =o I can't say how reliable that is... they do sound alike, but it didn't really strike me.

Snitter is voiced by the same guy who did Hazel, but I'm not sure who Rowlf is voiced by. Yay for John Hurt - I've loved him since Jim Henson's The Storyteller. 3nodding

Man, I just finished watching Plague Dogs. That was so incredibly sad... It was really well done too. I might need to read the book.

The book is very good and I recommend you read it but if you found the movie sad be prepared the book gets FAR worse. It is very in-depth but an important message is in there so if your interested please read but be forewarned I cried right through it. (K that could also be just me because I have a huge soft spot for animals and animal cruelty makes me MAD.)But really it's good even if you just like rabbits you can warm right up to these dogs.

I have the book, actually 2-3 copies, and I have the movie.
The movie is a little graphic, about as graphic as you can get with animated blood. Not as bad though as you may thing. Not any worse than the rabbits fighting. Language in the Plague Dogs is much worse. The whole story makes me hate human kind with how they portray the overreaction and indifference toward animal lives.
Its very sad though. You'll cry in the beginning with the labratory scenes. Then you'll cry again in the end.

It's kind of like they say in Men in Black - "A person is smart, people are stupid." Just because they heard that there was a type of plague in the testing facility, doesn't mean they should freak out about the dogs. Especially since dogs are immune; I'm not sure if they can still carry it though.
Anyways, I was mad because no one tried to really help the dogs, except for maybe that one guy, but you never find out his true intentions because of the accident. Everyone just freaked out. And the worse part was they actually had to DEBATE about closing down the facility, but when it came to the dogs: "Kill 'em!" Stupid rass-a-fracking... *beep beep beep* humans.
Also, I heard the book had a happier ending, for Snitter at least. I didn't see mention of Rowlf. Does he get the same ending as Snitter? A simple yes or no will be enough to not give it away for others. whee

Hey, guess what! I dropped by one of the used bookstores downtown today. I was halfheartedly glancing through the fiction section for something or anything of Richard Adams', and as luck would have it, there was Plague Dogs! :] I've been looking for it at the various new and used book stores all over without any success at all, so to see it there was just awesome. Even awesomer, it was only 2 bucks!
So of course I bought it. :] I'll tell you guys what I think once I've finished reading!

I'm reading The Plague Dogs. It is definitely more intense (or horrific) than Watership Down, but if it's written by Adams, it's definitely worth reading. Besides, I like intense books. XD

I like intense books as well, but usually I try not to read them when I'm busy with other things. Otherwise, I have to put it down even though I don't want to xd
