Ive been playing about 2 and a half years now and ive learned i think just about all of the basics of every technque...but i cant figure out exactly what i need to do to tap. ive tried it but all it does is mute the string and i get virtually no sound at all...i have 5 different basses that ive tried it on that i own. also ive tried it when trying out basses...it just doesnt work. can someone here help me?

it's not something someone can like tell you in a forum how to do, i would say look for a video on youtube, or get someone to teach you face to face

Just remember, you're pressing down on the string with your right hand just behind the fret, just like if you were doing it with your left. This shouldn't mute the string but actually make the note sound out.

check around.. there was another post like this in which i posted a tab that i created as a good starter to tapping...

You'll need alot of finger strength.
The whole point is to push down hard enough to the fret for a note to sound minus the strumming.
