Hello, me again with a question...

Cookie has been riding in a rope/horsemans hackamore really ever since Ibought her in march, but i haven't been riding in a few months. How do I transition from a hackamore to a bit again? She was ridden in a bit before I came in the picture.

Thanks!

What kind of bit was she riding in before, and why was she ridden in a hackamore in the first place?

She was ridden in a standard eggbutt snaffle. I'm doing Parelli with her so I got the hackamore to use on her, which she responds well to. We learned a little while ago that her bit actually was a tad too small for her month. >.<

I have not ever used a hackamore, so keep that in mind with my advice, but it seems like to me that if Cookie had a bit before than she(?) should not be freaked out by it when you reintroduce her. I would personally take a couple of days of putting it in her mouth and hand walking her around with it a bit to show it is no big deal and then maybe lunge her once or twice with it to make sure she isn't going to flip out before you hope on. not hard lunging, just enough so that you can see how she is moving with it. And of course when you ride her make sure to use soft hands so she doesn't start disliking the bit (but I am sure you knew that =P)

Thanks, your advise was good. ^^ Yeah, she'll need a few days to get used to something in her mouth again. She should be ok, since she had one before. Thanks!

She wont have forgotten how to wear and respond to a bit. Like crystal said, lunging her a couple times with it on first is a good thing if you're leery, and even with side reins if you can (just so she can bump into the bit a couple times). Horses are smart. It's not like she'll suddenly realize she has a bit in her mouth again when you get on her. Just be sure to get on with a bit for the first time in an enclosed space (maybe with someone there, just in case), and practice a lot of stopping and turing as a refresher. It should be totally fine, she might even suprise you on how well the switch over goes.

You could always try putting the bridle over your hackamore (if you're doing Parelli then I'm assuming you're using the rope hackamore, there should be plenty of room for a bridle to go over) and using the hackamore for initial control while getting her used to having the bit in her mouth. Midway through the session you could try switching to the reins attached to the bit; if she freaks out, use approach and retreat between the hackamore and the bridle until she seems to accept it better.

If she used a bit before she shouldn't have too much of a problem with it. She'll know what it is and will probably not even be bothered by it.
