So, to commemorate the loss of a great man, Mr. Gary Gygax, creator of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, I think a conest is in order.

Everybody role a D20. Highest role wins a prize.

And check out the other event in the EVENTS FORUM. You do remember we have one, right? You're passing up free gold and items.

Kudos Gary. Without you our lives would have been poorer.
What greater praise can a man receive?
You will be missed, but your legacy lives on.

Agreed. As a fan of DnD, I have to say that what he created was great and that 4th ed. kills it all.

Actually, he stood for pretty much everything in roleplaying that I do not like: Dice-roll-determined characters, character-classes, level-based character advancement, alignment rules, once-a-day-spells, random monster encounters, leveled dungeons, racially motivated robbery and murder ("they're goblins, let's kill them and take their gold"), etc. But I recognize that without him, none of the games that I do love would ever have come into existence: GURPS, World of Darkness, Warhammer FRP, In Nomine, Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, Unknown Armies, Pandemonium, etc. pp.

We play Rolemaster, Rifts, Palladium and Xcrawl. Those out our faves, along with one shot 3rd ed games. WE haedly ever take RP seriously though. That's how we can retain enoughy dignity to play XCrawl.

Well, it's a game, of course. But I have this one group, we played Conspiracy X for almost 8 years, and the characters really grew and got their own backstories and everything. The stories are not yet finished but we moved apart, so we only meet once or twice a year nowadays to continue. I guess you can say, we take that story pretty serious. smile

May he be rolling in his grave.

It's funny though, last Gencon I got within 10 feet of him, and was just in utter shock and awe.

I also kinda knew it would be his last. Sad, that it had to happen when wizards supposedly tried to patch things up with him (with the whole, HEY GARY, WE ARE GOING TO RAPE AND PILLAGE YOUR OLD CHILD, HOPE YOU ENJOY IT AND NO ROYALTIES thing.)

Here's hoping that his memory lives on, that new game he was making gets finished one way or another, and that people remember all he's given to us nerds.

Next time you play standard D&D, pass on the eberron and even forgotten realms. Play a good ole Greyhawk campaign.
