The following is an overview of the ritual recorded by Abraham of Worms, of Germany, in the year 1458, which was apparently given to him by Abramelin the Mage, of Egypt.
The idea behind it is to summon your personal "Holy Guardian Angel" in order to converse with it and gain its knowledge for yourself. Please note that this is an exceptionally elabourate and lengthy ritual. The Mather's translation of this grimoire states that the working phase of this ritual takes six months, but the original German manuscripts suggest that it would actually take eighteen months before any divine contact is made. Once this ritual is begun, it cannot be stopped without ill consequences, so be sure that you are willing to invest a year and a half of your time before undertaking this endeavour. It is highly unrecommended for Gardnerian Wiccans, LaVeyan Satanists and Theistic Satanists, simply because of what their faiths preach.
During the initial phase, the magician must remain chaste, refusing sex, drugs, alcohol, and business and social interactions must involve as much fairness as the magician can muster. Prayer must take place on a daily basis, before dawn and at dusk. It is recommended that a focal point such as a sigil or artifact is used to hold your focus.
After a the preparatory stage is completed, you will know it. The magician will be confronted with his or her guardian, who will then begin to impart its knowledge of magic to the magician. Following this point, the magician must evoke the Twelve Dukes of Hell (Lucifer, Satan, Leviathan and so on) in order to bind them. This enables the magician to control them, and allows himself or herself to remove their negative influences from their life. These twelve spirits must then deliver a number of familiar spirits, which is explained more thoroughly in Abramelin's Fourth Book.
Provided that the ritual is successful, you now have a multitude of different potential powers at your disposal. According to the book, there are several fantastical possibilites, including invisibility and flight, though I will leave the belief of such to your discretion. Several other more mundane yet plausible possibilities are mentioned in the sources I've looked into, but aren't specified.
Several tools are required for this ritual, and it is unlikely you will simply find them lying around.
More information will be provided, assuming I can get myself a copy of the more recent translation.
