I actually empathize most with Rei. He wants what's best for the person he loves, and is willing to do anything for her.
Even if said person decides to forfeit their relationship. Even if seeing her causes great pain. He will be there. He will preserve her, till his last breath.

I don't know who I empathize most with. Maybe Nicias (I know, wrong book, but there's really no one else in the series I connect with) because he feels so out of place much of the time. At least that's the impression I got from reading the third book.
Poor Rei. I think he needs a hug, even if he is an Avian.

I definatly agree. Plus, she saw the person she loved being absolutely miserable because of said pretty girl. Even less fun.
