Be friends with his close friends and ask them about him, if he's straight say something like: "Oh...seriously? Whenever I talk to him he seems really out of it," and if he is gay say something like: "Is that why whenever I talk to him he acts weirdly?" Or..something like that.
I wouldn't have any experience in this since I'm not out of the closet yet ( =C ), so if it seems childish to do that, I wouldn't deny it.
