Here is something to debate. Where did the Almighty originate from?
We don't have to just stick to the bible with this. I'm sure other religious scripts have their version of how their God(s) came to be. There are also various books, some fictional, religious theories, and such that also offer versions. What similarities and differences do we find?
I asked this question to my Mom once and she told me "He is a thought that became aware" or something along that line. She also told me that one of the Books of the bible is supposed to offer an explanation. But don't ask me where, or which Bible version (or the date it was printed) it is supposed to be in.

Technically you could say that "He is a thought that became aware". My belief from a scientific/humanitarian standpoint is that people became aware of great happenings in their world. Because they did not understand much of their world, they needed something to explain it. When you have many things to explain, it makes sense to have one governing body (i.e. the Christian God, Vishnu, Zeus).
Hippocrates puts it like this: "Men think epilepsy divine, merely because they do not understand it. But if they called everything divine which they do not understand, why, there would be no end of divine things."
You see his theory especially in Greek mythology, but truly Greeks citizens have evolved from that time, we all have. Our ancestors most likely believed in some sort of divine something just so that they could explain the unknown. Wouldn't you like to have some sort of explanation for something you didn't understand? Humans fear the unknown, and they despise not knowing. That is why we are creatures of an unending journey for answers. That is why our children bother us with incessant bouts of the 'why' game.
In time, I do believe that this theory evolved into something more profitable for the more educated and the opportunists. They created God to be something to fear, something that has already chosen whether you were to live eternity in Heaven or Hell. Since we are uncertain of his decision, and our bad behavior could influence his decision of where we are to go, we will behave. This method was especially used in the times of Lords and Ladies, serfs and peasants.
And in time, this has evolved into something more like it has been for the last couple of decades. That we were created "equal" by some entity, that we are loved by this entity, and that we will all be OK in the end because this entity is protecting us.
In each religion/spirituality/belief the entity changes names and persona, but they are generally the same. We each want some sort of moral rule giver that obligates everyone to be kind to their fellow human. Its nothing to be ashamed of, believing in something higher than us that gave us the instructions on life by giving us moral feelings, gut feelings, and other intuitive reasoning techniques. We should truly rejoice that we are humans and we each think similarly.
To me, it really all comes down to the fact that we want something to believe in, a group to belong to, and something to explain reasons/causes for the unknown.
