So when I was 12 I got sunburned very badly on my shoulders, to the point that on the 2nd day after the burn each of my shoulders had an all-over blister. If I were at my parents' house right now I'd scan a pic of my shoulders about 5 days after the burn, after the blisters were broken and started to heal - my shoulders were completely raw (gross).

Anyways, I recently got my first tattoo over my shoulderblade (I'm almost 20 now, btw), over part of the area that was sunburned so badly, and it hurt like hell over the parts of my shoulder that had been burnt so badly, but it was okay over the parts that hadn't been burnt too badly.

Just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with tattoos over healed badly sunburned areas. I know that you can scar deep from burns and such, but it's been 8 years, and since that burn I've always been overprotective of my shoulders in the sun (think SPF 60).

It's also kind of funny, because it's now been 4 days since I got tattooed (Tuesday night!) and the tattoo is inflamed and itchy over those same parts but normal over the part that weren't burned badly. I'm hardly scabbing though, there's been no drainage or anything so I'm not too concerned, I'm just cleaning it 2 times a day and putting Ceravey or Eucerin on it whenever it itches.

The pic was taken about 4 hours after I got the tattoo. Sorry about the quality - it was taken by my cell phone

When you get sunburned that badly, it does a lot of damage to the underlying nerves. Scars are odd-sometimes they go numb, but most of the time they are more sensitive than the skin around it. Even though it's been so many years since you were burned, that skin will never fully repair from the damage done. This also accounts for your tattoo behaving differently on the badly scarred areas. The skin has changed in texture and sensitivity and therefore will react differently to the ink. I'd also be willing to bet that your shoulders are doubly sensitive to heat and cold on the old sunburned areas.
I've had to tattoo on a guy who had chemical burns, and his skin reacts in a very similar way to what you're describing. The front of both his upper arms was burnt just deep enough to take off all his freckles (he's a ginger, so he has a LOT of freckles), but the back half of his arms are fine. Whenever I have to ink on the scarred skin, it hurts him worse, and takes longer to heal.

Yeah... I never even gave it a thought when I was thinking where to get the tattoo. My shoulders ARE sensitive to the sun, but only on the very tops of them, which is strange. Ehh, oh well. It's doing fine now, just itchy. The inflammation is gone, and now I guess it's doing normal healing tattoo things.

The chemical burns took off his freckles?? That's not fair, I never had freckles on my shoulders until I got sunburned so badly. Now my shoulders explode with freckles after a half an hour in the sun.

Yeah, it took off his freckles. He has so many he almost looks tan, but the places where the chemicals got on his arms and chest, it's just pinkish-white with a little bit of a weird texture.
I got sunburned so bad and so frequently as a little kid that my nose doesn't have freckles anymore. The rest of my face and body react the same as your shoulders–sit in the sun for a little bit and they appear.
