Okay, as you are probably well aware music is different all over the world. You've got your Indian tribal music, quirky Japanese bands, Brit-pop and Jungle music to name but a few different types. But the whole reason for me posting this thread was because I wanted to see what music you like from different places in the world and why.

. . . So fire away whee

Um...I don't think my international music taste is too varied, but I'll just post them anyway.

I love almost any Italian music! The language is so flowing and beautiful! Some of my favourite artistes are Andrea Bocelli and Il Divo. Isn't it amazing that their songs are a "cocktail" mixture of opera and pop? I even nicknamed this genre "mopera", short for modern opera. ("Popera" is just plain weird.) Furthermore, the boys of Il Divo are from different backgrounds: France, Spain, Switzerland, and America. Now that's what I call international! biggrin

Enya's music is great. I'm not too sure, but I think she sings in Gaelic. All the piano scores, cello-pluckings, and other synthesised sounds meld together to create some of the most peaceful and relaxing ballads heard. Enya's voice is ethereally haunting and melodious. Everytime I pop her CD on, I'm transported to another fantastic, rustic old realm. (LOTR, what else!) xd

Oh, Japanese! I'm seriously addicted to anime soundtracks. "Kaze Ni Numa", "Paul and Liese", and the entire "Spirited Away" album, for instance. They're all too varied to go into proper detail! I find that if I keep repeating a particular song, I'm able to memorise the lyrics. That goes for any Asian song. Unfortunately, I usually have no idea what they mean! sweatdrop

I only know one Spanish song, called "El Noche". It's sung by The Corrs and features Alejandro Sanz. It resembles Bocelli's music, except that it's sung with pop voices. There are some guitar parts, and the song has an overall atmosphere of tenderness. Yup, it's best listened to at night! mrgreen Speaking of The Corrs, I must say that each of their songs has a unique quality, with a wonderful Irish influence! wink

Indie bands from Singapore like Ronin and Electrico, have roots in guitar-based rock-and-roll. There are also many national songs. I don't usually listen to them, though. It's not that they aren't good; they're great! But I still prefer international music. 3nodding

Dude! First off, we gotta chat, because it's hard enough to find people as into classical world music as I am anywhere, let alone here!

I'm going into ethnomusicology, so this is kind of my area of expertise wink

I grew up with Brasilian and Irish folk music, and Irish and Celtic music is what I'm hoping to specialize in. I've branched out in the last few years though. Here's some people to look into for different kinds (most you can find on myspace and youtube): Azam Ali and Niyaz introduced me to Middle Eastern music (mainly Persian, as they are from Iran), Anoushka Shankar is an amazing Sitar player (daughter of Ravi Shankar, the man who introduced Indian music to George Harrison, and half sister of Nora Jones), La Filetta is an amazing a capella group who sings Corsican polyphony, and Ivo Papasov is one of the greatest clarinetists in the world (he's from Bulgaria, but he's a Rom - 'gypsy'). I also love Russian music of any kind, French rap, Romani music, and chanting of all kinds (another thing I would love to specialize in). I started learning the haegum (Korean 2 string fiddle) last summer.
